Anyone learning about his relatively short life must also pay tribute to his resolve and courage. I've noticed during my time in bands that the music I like sparks creativity, and the lovely theme from the Kyrie of the Mass in C minor spawned a lot of ideas once I'd decided to write something for guitar using it. Mozart's harmonies seem both exclusive and perfect, and I can't imagine my musical life without them. I got to know the Mass when I looked after Nigel's place while he was away, as it was in his record collection. My good friend died (of bone cancer) not long after that, and the Fantasy is a homage to him.

A transcription of Debussy’s Golliwog’s Cakewalk for Clarinet Sextet.At the time of its composition, Golliwog's were in fashion, due partly to the popularity at that time of the novels of Florence Kate Upton (golliwog is a later usage). They were stuffed black dolls with red pants, red bow ties and wild hair, somewhat reminiscent of the black-face minstrels of the time. This is a ragtime piece with its syncopations and banjo-like effects. The dynamic range is quite large and very effective. The B section of this dance is interrupted on several occasions by the love-death leitmotif of Richard Wagner’s opera Tristan und Isolde, marked avec une grande émotion (with great feeling). Each quotation is followed with banjo imitations. The cakewalk was a dance or a strut and the dancer with the most elaborate steps won a cake (took the cake). Need an anthem fast? In this book we see a much greater development towards dramatic representation. In a way, this book is divisible into two Scenes with a number of single items in between. The vocal lines are all much more complex and we can also see the beginnings of monodic writing appear in the semi-recit sections of some of the songs. Also clearly developing are delineations of the voices into soloists and chorus. Several songs in this book are almost akin to arias, with clear soloistic writing for the higher voices (Cantus/Tenor). The first four songs form a kind of introductory 'scena', which Monteverdi calls Lamento d'Arianna. A little later, there is a set of 6 songs which he grouped together under the title Sestina. This song, No 10 starts with the line Here Tirsi laughed and wriggled under the two(twin?) stars of the beautiful Clorinda I think you get the picture! We can see plenty of musical laughing and wriggling in the music with dotted rhythms and semiquaver runs. The top two voices are Clorinda (doing a fair amount of wriggling herself) while the bottom two take the part of Tirsi. There are places where all four voices give vent to an exclamation and where, presumably, the two lovers had to stop for breath! The original incorporates a very basic continuo part, which I have shared between the resting voices. As with all things madrigalian, the lyrics are rife with double entendres.

Ole Buttermilk Sky was primarily written as a cowboy song to set the scene where the character meets his lover.[3] The song also used jazz music for the lyric can't you see my little donkey and me. It was recorded in the December 14 issue of The Billboard that Ole Buttermilk Sky by Kay Kyser was at #1 .A version by Helen Carroll and the Satisfiers was at #8. Paul Weston and his Orchestra with Matt Dennis had their version at #9. For the week ending December 14, 1946, in the Most Played Juke Box Records chart, it showed that the song was getting many plays and there were five versions getting attention. Kay Kyser's version on Columbia 37073 had been on the chart was at #2. Hoagy Carmichaels version was at #5. Paul Weston and his Orchestra with Matt Dennis were at #9. Helen Carroll and the Satisfiers were at #15. And a version by Connee Boswell was coming up.[6].

Just as the women have Arianna, Daphne and Clorinda, so the men have Theseus, Clovis and various other mythological fantasies. As with all things madrigalian, the lyrics are rife with double entendres.

This is a collection of 12 Trios (or Duets) arranged for Violin, Viola and Cello, based on melodies of beloved traditional christian hymns.  Melodies are harmonized mostly by interweaving counter melodies.  The Violin and Viola (or Violin II) are, at times, alternating melody and counter melodies, rather than the traditional vocal parts found in church hymnals. The result is a more interweaving flow of melody and counter melody.  The Cello provides the bass, as it also contributes to the counter melodious sound.  A Violin II part has been added to duplicate the Viola, in case a Viola is not available. These pieces also work very nicely as duets without the Cello; or duets with the Violin and Cello.  Designed for early intermediate musicians, the collection is ideal for prelude or postlude music and especially offertories in worship services, funerals, weddings, etc .  Length of the pieces can be altered by using more or less of the repeats included.  The last two pieces are based on melodies from Christmas hymns.  In addition, these pieces have a technical training value, as would etudes and exercises, due to the moving counter melodies that may challenge students at the early intermediate level.  Though written to challenge students at the early intermediate level, more advanced musicians and audiences will find this music quite satisfying to play and enjoy, respectively.  String class teachers may consider using this collection in class, as the entire Violin, Viola or Cello sections will be in unison, as a section, which provides support to players within their section.  At same time, the other sections would be playing other parts, also in unison as a section - a good ensemble practice tool.  The class might perform pieces from this collection in concert.  Titles: Count Your Blessings, I Must Tell Jesus, In the Garden, Jesus Loves Even Me, Let All Things Now Living, O How I Love Jesus, O the Deep, Deep Love of Jesus, Take Time to be Holy, The Old Rugged Cross, This is My Father's World; and two Christmas pieces: It Came Upon a Midnight Clear and Silent Night! This is the fifteenth volume of an extensive collection of folk songs arranged for the classical guitar mostly in two-part counterpoint. The arrangements are of moderate difficulty and the aims of this publication are to familiarise, entertain and educate guitarists (and other musicians) with a melodic repertoire of lasting aesthetic value, under the light of contrapuntal treatment. The thirty five volumes of this collection can certainly be printed on paper if so desired and there are a few pages in each volume, either blank or with photographs of various musicians, which can be inserted at will in any place for the correct ordering of left and right hand pages so that page turns can be avoided. The principle of avoiding page turns has been maintained in all volumes, but this edition is also designed with mobile electronic devices in mind such as tablets etc, using the environment and facilities of a score reading application, towards a paperless world, at least in music. Therefore the size of the staves is bigger than usual for ease of reading on a small screen but not big enough to exceed the limit of a two-page view.
