The guitar accompaniment is styled on the piano solo score, but tailored here and there to fit the guitar like a glove.The key here isn’t the same as the original, but it fits right into the “sweet spot� of the oboe's pitch range and allows for a guitar accompaniment that can use open strings to improve the sustain. Unlike other arrangements, this has plenty of space and few finger gymnastics, so the gentle movement of the original is easy to reproduce.I also have an arrangement for two guitars which moves the melody between the guitars as the piece progresses.I hope you enjoy playing this piece! Omnia Sol Temperat came out of an assignment from Professor David Bryant to create mood music, also called photoplay music, a common genre of film music during the silent era. When the accompaniment for films was performed live, the performers used books of stock music conveying various emotions, any of which could be selected to fit the scene. The studio provided the performers with a cue sheet for the film, describing each scene along with suggestions for what music would accompany it best. Omnia Sol Temperat is intended to accompany a romantic scene, not a young innocent love, but a relationship that has faced numerous struggles and has grown-up. The text is in Latin, and originates from the Carmina Burana manuscripts. It can be translated: Love me faithfully, Taking heed of my loyalty, With all your heart, With all your mind. Speed Limit 90 is a piece I wrote for a student of mine who loves car racing.  He, and other students of mine, love the piece very much.  The piece is challenging but when played up to speed and smoothly, the excitement of its performance is obvious.  One particular technique my students enjoy is the Ceasuras.  Their imagination is enhanced when they picture a cow in the road, or a stop sign, and have to slam on the brakes!  The rhythms of the melody and accompaniment are somewhat advanced, but are repetitious throughout, so students reinforce them greatly.  Use of accents on certain beats in the melody and accompaniment reinforces this technique as well.  Speed Limit 90’s tempo indicator is half note is at 90 on the metronome.  Having the half note receive a beat is advanced for this level however, the piece can easily be played in 4/4 time until the student is comfortable with the cut-time feel.  Your students will be challenged by Speed Limit 90 but they will also love showing it off at recitals!

Flexible quintet, parts for oboe, 1st and 2nd trumpet, trombone and timpani supplied.  Solo oboe set against the rest in antiphony. A fanfare for a graduation ceremony is unusual in celebrating the whole assembled company: students, their supporting families, distinguished guests and the staff.  Wishing to make the piece relevant to York St John's University, I considered its religious foundation and dedication to St John, the apostle.  I was delighted to find reference to a Missa Brevis by Robert Hugill, which has never been performed and may never have been published:  this includes an Agnus Dei.  The composer very generously sent me a copy, and I have inserted a well-disguised quotation from it.  Agnus Dei, Lamb of God, is taken from the Gospel of St John, Chapter 1 Verse 29.  My central section is a slow peacock processional pavane, as I anticipate the parade of begowned personages. I wanted to avoid unnecessary dissonance and confusion to be created by York Minster's echo.  I hoped the echo would  enrich the texture rather than muddy it, therefore, I used a scale without semitones--the whole-tone scale, and the lack of rapid passage-work will also help in this acoustic.  I love the antiphonal works of, for instance, Giovanni Gabrieli, which were intended for cathedrals, and Decani-Cantoris antiphony appears in, for example, Orlando Gibbons' O Clap Your Hands, which can be found in the 17th century Bing-Gostling part-books at York Minster.   The Graduation Fanfare lasts about 1 minute 50 seconds.
