Along with Isaac Albéniz, Francisco Tárrega, and Enrique Granados, he was one of Spain's most important musicians of the first half of the 20th century. He has a claim to being Spain's greatest composer of the 20th century, although the number of pieces he composed was relatively modest.

Kuhlau's dates are 1786-1832, so he's definitely in the classical tradition. Born 16 years after Beethoven and 5 years before Mozart's death. He was German-born, but migrated to Denmark and became a Danish citizen to avoid being drafted into Napoleon's army. His sonatinas and other works for piano as well as other instruments became quite popular during his lifetime in Europe.
