While out on a winter’s walk one evening, I was thinking through the lovely It Came upon the Midnight Clear, and without any warning, Chopin’s exquisite Nocturne in E-flat, Op. 9, No. 2 kind of crept in and curled itself around the Midnight melody and made itself at home. The result is this gentle mashup of these two beauties in a piano solo.Most of us do not have tons of time to practice, but the original Chopin left hand chords and leaps are daunting, so I have modified the bass notes without losing the composer’s harmonic intentions. Also the original time signature of 12/16 has been changed to 6/8, a more familiar friend and is compatible with It Came upon the Midnight Clear. There are some suggested fingerings in a few places. Use pedal at your trained ear’s discretion.I played this piece as a Prelude for our church Christmas Eve Candlelight Service, and the mood that it set was heavenly. Enjoy, and I hope you or your advancing students enjoy playing this at your next holiday event!

It builds on his words with references to the multitude of Psalmic exhortations to exuberantly praise God in manifold ways and make His praise glorious. The character of the piece reflects this with a joyous and spirited aesthetic above a driving tempo. The text also juxtaposes our contemporary praises within the historic stream of doxologies from saints past and future as a precursor to the eternal, magnificent, and heavenly doxologies portrayed in Revelation 5 and 7. The melody correspondingly has roots in the traditional Old 100th Psalm tune as well, although it will take a keen ear to catch it.Although set for SATB choir, it is hoped that the accessible melody will find a place in your congregational singing also. Make His Praise a Glorious Thing is a wonderful call to worship, responsorial, or sacred concert opening or closing. Choral octavos with piano accompaniment are available separately.

This was life for all those who dwelled in the ancient society of Sumeria! They Who Decide Fate paints the picture of what living with these gods might have been like for those pitiable mortals. The introduction builds to the dreadful fate theme, which is woven within the rest of the piece. In the first episode, the Eb clarinet is highlighted depicting Enki, the magical, clever Lord of the Earth. Crafty and mischievous, one would not cross this god, so mighty he was said to have created the Tigris and Euphrates rivers between which the entire Sumerian world existed! The full orchestra comes roaring back to represent Shamash, the Lion of Justice. Bringing wrongdoers their just due, he could also be merciful, curing the faithful sick who plead for his mercy. The second episode is gently ushered in by the Basset horn. Featured here is Ninhursag, the mild, nurturing Mother Goddess. It was said that any couple who desired to be fertile would do well to propitiate themselves to herâ?¦ An explosive, percussive jolt fanfares in Inanna, wild, untamed Goddess of Primal Passions! Whether in war or in lust, Inanna stood for all things raw-and ultimately destructive! The low, rumbling voice of the contralto clarinet brings us Anu, Father of the Gods. Ancient and wise, Anu is the manifestation of the heavenly vault. Nanna, the moon god riding on the back of a bull, illuminated the night sky. Sparkling and light colors of the orchestra depict his deft, spry nocturnal motions. The sinuous lines of the Bb clarinet illustrate Enlil, fickle God of Wind and Weather. It is said that it was he who created humans, but lost interest in them and flooded the whole earth. The whole clarinet quartet reprises the fate theme one last time, ending in an exultant flurry, reflecting both the fear and ecstasy that these seven gods inspired in their mortal charges. It starts with the trumpets at the end of the world, the sense of quiet expectation. Wind across a field. It drops off into the silence of outer space. The initial theme presented against that impersonal void, knowing that He's out there, somewhere. Some of this is very difficult for me to describe because this is really about the Triune God, the great creative power, the mover in harmony and cooperation with Himself. The second verse is more grand, the love, the sense of story. And then it gets very, very big, in the way that I AM is always in capitals. Who WAS and IS and evermore shall BE! And in my mind that word BE is light, and just explodes against the blackness into a billion sparkles. And we shrink down to the microcosm for a moment, the wonders of His creative power in the tiny worlds, and it fades to the black of space again. Holy, Holy, Holy, though the darkness hide Thee. The Light that we can't see that would outshine all the stars. More beauty, and then we tumble down the waterfall of Living Water from the Throne of God...in Heaven. The golden palaces and the wonder, the unearthliness, the richness of the life. For a moment it's more simple and I'm reminded of an old hymn being sung in a rustic church. Then a vision of the Cosmic Christ from Revelation giving a benediction, and we're plunged into the chorus of Heaven, the new song of the 144,000. (this part sounds really good on an acoustic piano because the sound physically builds on itself) And it ends as it began...
