Dark Eyes, sometimes known as ‘Black Eyes’, has its roots in both The Ukraine and in Russia. Although it was originally known as a ‘Russian- Romani’ folksong, at the beginning of the Twentieth Century, it achieved a much wider international reputation when Italian-born British composer, Adalgiso Ferraris, published a new version in 1910. It was also later sung and recorded by Al Bowlly in 1939. It has also gained some currency as a jazz tune.

This is very handy for teachers of groups of like instruments. ‘Hava Nagila’ is an integral part of Jewish culture and it is appropriate that this arrangement would be played in the style and with the inflections of, for example, the 'Klezmer' Clarinet tradition. Although there are lyrics, the tune has gained considerable  wider  universal popularity as a dance that moves inexorably to an exciting and  exhausting climax.

Rustic Dance was composed by C.R. (Cyrus Ryerson) Howell (1857-?), a Canadian minister, artist and musician and was first published by the De Luxe Music Company of New York in 1900. It has been described as a quirky country-dance style piece.  It was used in a scene in the 1962 film “The Music Man�.

This piece is quite long (6.31) but it can be made shorter by omitting the repeats (4.54) or just using the main waltz themes without repeats (2.30) by starting one beat before letter A and finishing at the bar before letter G.

Gold and Silver waltz was composed by Franz Lehar (1870-1948) for Princess Pauline von Metternich’s “Gold and Silver� Ball in January 1902. It has been made popular in recent times by André Rieu and his orchestra.

Gustav Lange (1830-1889) was a German composer known mainly for his salon music for the piano. Encouraged by the success of some 1860s compositions, he produced a large number of works, most of which were light and popular piano pieces of which he wrote around 500. Edelweiss op. 31 and Blumenlied op. 39 are perhaps two of his best-known works today.

Immediate success followed in both London and in America, and it was later adapted as a Ballet. There have been many subsequent arrangements of different elements of the Score that invariably include the ’molto sentimento’ Waltz, itself.

Pastoral Symphony is the 13th movement in Handel's Messiah. This is the beginning of Scene 4 of the oratorio, The Annunciation to the Shepherds, after the birth of Jesus.

The word pastorale in baroque music is a melody in thirds over a drone bass. Originally called Pifa, this movement was named after the shepherd bagpipers - pifferari - who used to play their instruments in the streets of Rome at Christmastime.

Scored for soprano, 2 altos, and baritone saxophones. Optional parts are:

This haunting piece of music from Beethoven's 7th Symphony has been carefully abridged and arranged for Saxophone Quintet, scored for Soprano, 2 Altos, Tenor and Baritone Saxophone. It is sympathetic to the original music and should be easily accessible for intermediate to advanced players. There is also an optional percussion part on Timpani (Bb and F) that can easily be played on old fashioned hand tuned instruments, and will lend a bit more gravitas to any performance. The piece is very musically satisfying to play and will sit well on any concert or recital programme. The duration of the piece is about 4:50 minutes. The PDF is 24 pages long (A4 portrait) containing a full score and parts. Printing guidance - Score (pages1-13 print A4 double sided), all parts p14-24 (with the exception of Timpani p24) are designed to fit 2 x A4 pages on A3). A canon is a polyphonic device in which several voices play the same music, entering in sequence. Pachelbel's Canon in D, was originally written in the key of D Major and was scored for three violins arranged in canon, accompanied by a basso continuo which repeats the same harmonic progression throughout the entire piece. The common musical term for this is ostinato or ground bass. Regis Bookshar has now arranged this music for a Saxophone Octet consisting of 3 Alto Saxophones, 4 Tenor Saxophones and 1 Baritone Saxophone. The three Alto Saxophones play the melody in canon while the ostinato accompaniment is played by the other five instruments.
