In 1853 Charles Czerny took this polka tune and created a piano etude as part of his set Amusement des Juenes Amateurs. I have taken some of his themes and adapted and arranged them for instrumental solo. I have assembled them into a Rondo form: Intro-A-B-A-C-A-D-A-Coda.  It is an etude (study) to sharpen your playing of scales, arpeggios, melodic interval leaps, and various articulations. But it doesn't at all sound like an exercise because of the playful nature of the polka. This dramatic piece shows your technical accomplishments while delivering a crowd pleasing tune with great flourish.I have marked it as Intermediate in difficulty as a general average. The notes and rhythms are Easy, the quick Tempo makes it Intermediate. Jules Demersseman was born on January 9, 1833 in Hondschoote, a small town in the north of France now near the border of Belgium. He entered the Paris Conservatory in 1844 in the class of Jean-Louis Tulou and won a first prize in flute in 1845. Demersseman had a career as a pedogogue and soloist, often performing his own compositions. A close friend of Adolphe Sax, he wrote some of the first works ever written for the saxophone, as well as for the saxhorn and for Sax‘s valved trombone, most of which were published by Sax himself.. Demersseman died in Paris on December 1, 1866 at the age of 33. The work is in the form of a Cavatina and Cabaletta, a vocal aria form used in Bel Canto operas during the life of Demersseman. In this form, a slow, expressive and ornamented melody (the cavatina), usually with solo cadenzas is followed by a faster, usually more dramatic but equally florid section (the cabaletta). Famous examples of this form include the aria Una voce poco fa in Rossini’s Il barbiere di Siviglia and Casta diva ... Ah! bello a me ritorno in Bellini‘s, Norma. It is important to listen to vocal performances in this style, especially in performing the solo cadenzas, which (in spite of the notation) are not necessarily meant to be performed as virtuoso effects., but rather as a means of displaying expression and beautiful tone. The piano part, obviously written to be quickly readable for a conservatory accompanist, has been modified to provide a fuller sound for the concert hall. If the work is used for examinations, these doublings may be changed back to single notes, if desired. Other dynamics, articulations, and expressive marks, absent in the first edition, have been added.

As a musician he was a lute player of professional level and seems to havebeen a refined and prolific composer of single pieces and suites in the French style for hisinstrument. His compositions are becoming known to us today through important academicresearch but a lot more work has to be made in this field. The present partita, (transcribed in A minor for guitar), was discovered early in this research and it is well known and loved amongstguitarist and lute players of today because of its ease in performance, but at the same timemaintaining a high compositional standard in terms of well-constructed movements incontrapuntal two-part writing.In these editions I prefer not to add any fingerings because I consider that they obscure the opticalresult rather than clarifying any particular way of playing the music. Instrumentalists have tomake their own fingering and choice of position decisions and in most cases they prefer it. My general suggestion for this partita is that open strings should be preferred whenever it is possible, as for example in the second half of the last movement where notes B and E are always sustainedas open strings in the upper part (indicated by the ties) and the required technique and sound result is that of an arpeggio rather than a scalic passage.Although here we have only a five movement partita and it is very easy to navigate from page to page, my usual procedure, followed for larger collections, is to give a thematic index in the beginning of the volume, with the first few bars of every piece given as photographs. If an electronic pad rather than printed music is used to play the music from these PDF archives, these photographs are clickable active links leading strait to the piece concerned, and the header of the page of any piece is another active link leading back to the index. The Overture Suite was a form and style of music popular in the 17th and first half of the 18th centuries. The early suites consisted of sets of the popular dance movements at the time and would have been used to accompany dancing. The overture was a later addition - probably for more formal  occasions - and enabled the composer to show off his skill before the dancing began. Telemann developed the form over the first half of the 18th century composing suites for a wide variety of instrumental combinations from groups of wind instruments for outside events, solo instruments with string orchestra, to string quartet, which was the original version of Overture Burlesque and one of the first string quartets.Instead of the usual dance titles, Telemann used characters associated with Scaramouche, a stock clown character - Harlequin the Joker, Columbine, Pierrot, Mezzetin en turc, the Narcissus of pantomime - and a pair of Menuets.  The suite would have been staged and the music played robustly to suit the characters as they danced. Players of intermediate standard and above will have fun playing this.The suite is arranged for flute, oboe, clarinet and bassoon to play as a concert piece or as an accompaniment to a stage performance.The tempo indications are suggestions in parentheses ( ) as are the additional dynamic markings. Some additional cadential trills have been added without comment. All added slurs are shown with dashed lines with the exception of those in Menuet 2 which I feel are necessary because of the change from string to wind instruments. About the arrangement  This is pianist/arranger Thomas Gunther's beautiful and highly accurate piano solo arrangement of the 2023 Barbie Movie features Billie Eilish's song WHAT I WAS MADE FOR.  It includes even Billie's quiet humming passages.This solo piano version can be played all by itself, or with Billie's recording of the song.It is easy enough to learn for pianists that have no amazing techniqual skills, but can be challanging in different ways, as explained below. From the Arranger Thomas Gunther  The most challenging task when writing this solo piano arrangement of What I Was Made For was to notate Billie's rhythm accurately. Her melodic rhythm is very important as it supports the flow of the lyrics perfectly. Notating a singer's rhythm can unfortunately never be 100% perfect (notation is by definition quantized), but I think I got very close. An other challenge was to get the accompaniment sound like the original without stepping on the melody notes. Looking at my final version I think it is as good as it gets for a piano adaption of this highly emotional song.I really hope all you Billie Eilish fans out there will enjoy playing this arrangement! How difficult is it As mentioned earlier, the song looks simple, but to play it well there is a lot of things the pianist has to take care of. The most challenging aspect is to sustain some notes by either using clever fingering or employing the sustain pedal. Also, dynamics are really important, especially when ballancing the accompaniment against the melody. Fingering I included fingering numbers to give the pianist a starting point. But fingering is a highly subjective affaire. Every pianist should feel free to adapt her/his own fingering as see fit. Sustain pedal usage The sustain pedal usage is very important in this arrangement (I included sustain pedal markings for this very reason). For one, it helps sustaining some notes that can't be held otherwise, and of course to make the sound fuller (more cinematic). It is important to use the pedal to create a sense of space (distance). After all, the original recording uses a lot of reverb to achieve that. Chord Symbols I did not include pop chord symbols because the harmony to the the song is very simple and based around 4 diatonic chords. It would just cludder up the score.
