Brass Ensemble - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.808676 Composed by Scott Joplin (1868–1917). Arranged by F. Leslie Smith. 20th Century,Film/TV,Folk,Holiday,Love,Ragtime. Score and parts. 20 pages. Sweetwater Brass Press #3213035. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.808676).     Marvin Hamlisch’s score for the 1973 movie The Sting revived interest in ragtime music. Ragtime, of course, is music, often in march-time, that features syncopation, a ragged beat. It originated in African-American districts of large cities and first flourished during the period, 1895-1918. One of the most successful ragtime composers was Scott Joplin, known as the King of Ragtime. Hamlisch used several Joplin compositions as background music for the George Roy Hill-directed film, and one of those was this beautiful and contemplative 1909 composition, Solace: A Mexican Serenade.     In All Music Guide to Classical Music: The Definitive Guide to Classical Music (Woodstra et al., ed., CMP Books: 2005), Blair Johnston called Solace a musical hybrid neither authentically Mexican nor authentic ragtime. It is, instead, a habanera, but also a very lovely piece of Americana.    This brass quintet arrangement of Solace was adapted from the Joplin piano score. Like the score, this arrangement is in 2/4 time and contains a lot of 16th notes. Joplin’s tempo instruction, however, is Very slow march time, and the metronome marking suggests 96 eighth notes a minute, so in reality the actual tempo is an andante 4/8. Trumpet 1 has some B-above-the-staff notes in the last section, Trumpet 2 has a few interesting rhythmic figures in section B; Trombone has 3 or 4 F-above-the-staff notes, and Tuba plays a couple of top-of-the-staff A’s in section D and at the very end. Plus, of course, the piece is syncopated.    Completed in 2017, this arrangement runs about 6 minutes, 10 seconds. Contact the arranger, Les Smith, at lessmith@ufl.edu; he would be delighted to hear from you. Choral Choir (SATB) - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.976736 Composed by Robert Myers. Children,Christian,Gospel,Sacred. Octavo. 12 pages. WheatMyer Music #6561371. Published by WheatMyer Music (A0.976736). Jesus Loves the Little Children is a fresh interpretation of the beloved children's song set as a choral anthem. New text, based on several gospel stories of Christ’s interaction with children, complements and extends C.H. Woolston's poetry to charge the church with caring for these little ones. Amid heightened emphases on our differences in recent days, Woolston's text came to mind as a pithy and poignant means to remind ourselves to look at each other through Christ’s eyes. And, if we do so, we will regard, not one another’s immutable external characteristics but, the imago Dei (image of God) common in us all. This music is meant to bring us toward this perspective through contemplation on how precious all the little ones, red and yellow, black and white, are in His eyes. This anthem features a pleasing and singable melody for average voices that will encourage, move and challenge listeners. The music could be used to complement scripture readings of Jesus' teaching on children or to support dedicatory and child recognition services. If you have the facilities, an accompanying montage of photos of children would focus and enhance the music's message.

Full Orchestra - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.533667 Composed by Carson Cooman. Contemporary. Score and parts. 54 pages. Musik Fabrik Music Publishing #3037087. Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing (A0.533667). Pittsburgh Concerto (2005) was written for the Carnegie Mellon Philharmonic and isdedicated to Amy Stabenow, concert manager at Carnegie Mellon’s School of Music. Thepiece was conceived as a tribute to the city of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA.The work contains only two specific “programmatically inspired†images related toPittsburgh. They form the outer two sections of the work. The inner four sections areinspired more abstractly by various aspects of the city, its landscapes, and its people; theyfeature a series of solos and duets for many members of the orchestra – in the manner of a“concerto for orchestra.â€The opening of the work is inspired by Pittsburgh’s history as America’s steel capital.Colors and sounds of the clangorous industrial age of America’s past are evoked. The basicmusical material (a six-note cell) for the entire work is presented in this aggressiveintroduction. Throughout the rest of the work, this basic material is developed in ways thatrange from lushly romantic to aggressively athletic. The following section is marked “slow, lush†and features a duet first between trumpet andtuba, over warm harmonies in the orchestra. A brief duet for vibraphone and marimba leadsto an extended viola solo. The next section is fast and energetic. It begins with an athletic duet for English horn andbass trombone, followed by a ringing duet of tubular bells and crotales. The final solo is forviolin, as the orchestral texture disintegrates around it.The next section, marked “slow, mysticalâ€, begins with a duet between piano and bassclarinet. A passionate horn duo follows before a passage for solo bass leads directly into thenext section. This section is fragmentary and halting. An unpitched duo of bass drum and flexatonebegins, leading to an aggressive and abortive duet between solo flute and bassoon. Finally,an extended cello solo closes the section. The final part of the work is inspired by my first visit to Pittsburgh. When driving in fromPittsburgh airport (which is far outside the city), the city itself is “hidden†from the road byhills. Upon reaching the hills, one enters the Fort Pitt tunnel and, after a few moments, emerges from it on a suspension bridge over the Monongahela River. Late at night, this wasa truly breathtaking moment as the city and its rivers emerged suddenly in a mass of glitteringlights. The ecstatic rush of the lighted city at night is portrayed in this section – amidstfragments from the opening, recalling the industrial past, now transformed into somethingnew.Instrumentation3 Flutes (3rd dbl. Piano,Violin - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1208882 By Jeremiah Klarman. By Jeremiah Klarman. Arranged by Jeremiah Klarman. Chamber,Classical. 14 pages. Inner Places Music, LLC #806986. Published by Inner Places Music, LLC (A0.1208882). A heartfelt tribute to the victims of terror attacks and violence, specifically of the mass shootings in Paris and San Bernardino in 2015. Elegy is a musical journey through grief and contains fragments of themes that ultimately do not get resolved, in the same way that a loss is never fully healed. These motifs repeat recurringly and join together to make melodies, echoing the anger, shock, fear and sadness that so many people experience as a result of these tragedies. I found myself moved to tears while writing Elegy and it is one of my most vulnerable and personal pieces to date.

String Quartet String Quartet - Digital Download SKU: A0.1027526 Composed by Martin Watt. Contemporary. Score and parts. 37 pages. Martin Watt #1988647. Published by Martin Watt (A0.1027526). The String Quartet no II comprises four movements: 1. Preludio, Passacaglia, Minuetto and Trio and Rondo. The first movement is fast and furious and cast in a modified sonata form - announcing two contrasting themes with a transitional section in between. The development section fulfills the role of various transformations and fragmental modifications of segmented thematic material, adding instabitily to the movement. The recapitulation is truncated, rather referential to the exposition and presented in reversed order. The second movement is a plaintive passacaglia, with a recurring eight-bar melody - in this case not traditional in nature as the bassline mostly carried the melody throughout, but nw distributed between all the string instuments. The theme is heard fourteen times. The use of textural contrast and canonic procedures add to the contrapuntal nature of the movement. The Minuetto and Tro movement is strikingly neo-tonal, and but sudden shifts of scalar centricities in the Minuetto add to suspension and elements of surprise. The Trio is more lyrical in character and fluttering fragments create dialogue between the members of the quartet. The last movement is cast in a modified Rondo form. The refrain parts are continuously presented in different textural and harmonic content. The alternating first episode draws material from the first movement and the second from the third movement, resulting in a cyclic structure of the work as a whole. The musical language is loosely based within extended tonality, with modal intersections and dissonant colours, making consonant sonoroties slightly ambiguous and unpredictable.2016 Chamber Music Contest Entry.

Brass Quintet - Grade 3 - Digital Download SKU: DX.145510 Composed by Leila N. Morris. Arranged by Dana F. Everson. Sacred instrumental music. Sheet Music. Traditional. Score and parts. 17 pages. David E. Smith - Digital Sheet Music #145510. Published by David E. Smith - Digital Sheet Music (DX.145510). Scored as a traditional bras quintet, the piece is a vigorous march in style and form. With fragments of the tune in the upper brass and answered in the lower voices. The second statement of the theme the roles are reversed. A modulation takes place and the theme is fragmented amongst the parts. Imitation takes place with some Q&A where it all leads up to a joyous conclusion. It sounds and feels like a school Fight Song.

Saxophone Ensemble,Woodwind Ensemble - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.755338 Composed by Sy Brandon. 20th Century,Contemporary. 81 pages. Sy Brandon #6619959. Published by Sy Brandon (A0.755338). Hope Collage was commissioned in honor of Hope College's 14th President, Matthew Scogin. President Scogin was inaugurated in 2019 and exemplifies the qualities of hope represented in this piece. The first movement Castles In The Sky is in 6/8 meter with some of the syncopated rhythmic figures that pit 3/4 against the 6/8. The major tonality is disguised by chromaticism either in the melody or in the counterpoint and harmony. The form is basically AB with a Coda. The slow second movement A Light at the End of the Tunnel has the tenor and baritone saxophones representing the darkness of the tunnel using minor and slightly dissonant harmony. The light at the end of the tunnel is represented by the alto and soprano saxophones. Even though they are still in minor, their brightness and rising arpeggios represent a glimmer of hope. By the time the movement nears the end, optimism has taken over and the entire ensemble is in shifting major tonalities leading up to the quiet, yet, prayerful end in B major. The third movement Knock On Wood has a Scherzo quality and is at an allegro tempo. The opening theme sets the tone of optimism with its combination of quartal, quintal, and triadic harmony along with staccato articulation. It is answered by the saxophones doing rhythmic slap tongue in a pyramid formation that represents knocking on wood. The theme and its variations alternate with the slap tongue throughout most of the movement. In several places, the theme and slap tongue appear in canon. Towards the end, the theme becomes fragmented and the slap tongue dominates. The fragments become pieced together leading to a final outburst of 16th note joy before the last chord. The movement ends with foot stomps that rhythmically suggests knock on wood. The last movement Promised Land is in two parts. The first is meditative and prayer-like in a moderate tempo. It has a passacaglia bass line and contrapuntal lines are added above it. It also grows in intensity until it reaches the Allegro, which is the second part and is celebratory. The Allegro begins with a sixteenth note motif that plays an accompaniment role in many places throughout the last section to the slower moving declarative lines. Near the end, motifs from the Moderato section are transformed in the Allegro, therefore linking the two sections.

Bassoon, cello and piano - difficult - Digital Download SKU: S9.Q6353 Composed by Benjamin Schweitzer. This edition: performance score. Downloadable, performance score. Duration 13 minutes. Schott Music - Digital #Q6353. Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q6353). Nausea (lat., seasickness, disgust) – Nenia (greek/lat., folksong, elegy, magical song): Two similar sounding terms, which offer, based on their ambiguity, lots of space to musical connotations. These subtitles of the two movements refer to a background idea of the piece – to bring musical gestures of anger on the one, mourning and desperation on the other hand together as close as possible. In both cases there are drudgingly dragged blocks of sound, circulating crumbles of motives, melodic fragments sometimes even reduced to single notes…. Nevertheless, in the end we can still hear an expanded relict of a drifty chant. Benjamin Schweitzer.

Instrumental Duet Instrumental Duet,Piano - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.972639 Composed by James Siddons. 20th Century,Folk,Holiday,Patriotic,Ragtime. Score and parts. 49 pages. James Siddons Music and Writings #3093043. Published by James Siddons Music and Writings (A0.972639). This composition, by composer, pianist, and musicologist James Siddons, is neither an  arrangement nor a medley. Rather, it is a kind of historical re-construction; one that  imagines how a typical piano rag of before 1905 would have sounded when performed  by a skillful vernacular pianist as a virtuosic improvisation.  A Million Buffalo Roam presents Tom Turpin's Buffalo Rag, Home On the Range, and the Star-Spangled Banner as an extended virtuosic display. It is a representation of a little-documented performance practice. After improvisatory passages on the three themes of The Buffalo Rag are heard individually, they are combined with the tunes of Home On the Range and the Star-Spangled Banner, including one passage in which Home On the Range and the Star-Spangled Banner are played simultaneously, combined with the accompaniment patterns of Buffalo Rag. This work may be performed as a piano duet, piano duo, or piano ensemble. It is also published as a Conductor's Score, with Primo and Secondo combined in one four-staff system.
