A barcarolle was originally a traditional Venetian gondolier song, usually in gentle 6/8 meter (think “Santa Lucia”). The name has also long been used in classical music for other compositions in that style. Of a great many barcarolles in the literature, the best-known is probably the duet “Belle nuit, o nuit d’amour “ from Jacques Offenbach’s final opera “Les Contes d’Hoffman.” This is a reasonably faithful arrangement for string quartet of that famous melody.

This piece was inspired by an actual 'passeggiata' in a small Tuscan town (Montespertoli) not far from Florence. There seemed to be no starting signal, yet suddenly the square was filled with people - excited children, teenagers in love for the first time, couples with strollers, serious adults discussing world affairs or the weather. They were walking slow, walking fast, talking slow, talking fast or not at all. And as I sat there drinking in this extraordinary spectacle, Sevcik's finger exercises were going round and round in my head. (3rd position plus harmonics).

This Barcarolle (a composition styled after Venetian gondolier songs), is a highly melodic Neoclassical piece that pays homage to the Romantic composers as well as Venice. The rolling 6/8 feel points toward the gentle flow of the water, churning underneath the gondola in a Venetian canal. A simple folk melody starts and is later picked up by a second voice in harmony, imagining two boats passing in the evening light. For Intermediate Solo Piano.

Roll was commissioned by Calliope Eastbay Music and Arts with Isaac Pastor-Chermak and Alison Lee. The piece explores the dual meanings of its title, rolling a chord and being on a roll. This piece is structured around two distinct sections, each representing one of these meanings, which alternate throughout the composition.

Roll a Chord section delves into the idea of rolling a major triad with different speeds.You Are on a Roll, explores the phrase being on a roll with a linear, non-stop melody, emphasizing the continuous motion and fluidity.

While these two sections initially present a clear contrast between vertical and horizontal musical elements, as the composition progresses, they gradually merge, revealing an intriguing realization: the concept of roll encompasses both vertical and horizontal motion in music.

Fauré's elegant, well-crafted piano music deserves to be better known. This is an arrangement for string quartet of one of the twelve Barcarolles he wrote between 1880 and 1915.
