Rudimentary Problem is a composition based on the idea of snare drum

music being melodically introduced into a string quartet. Flams, drags,

five-stroke rolls, single paradiddle and rhythmic variations can be spotted

within the musical score. The driving and almost continuous pizzicato

bass line in the cello part is the only aspect of the piece keeping the

ensemble together as it continues to move against the beat.

Looking for a way to for your handbell choir to include praise music? Good, Good Father (Brown, Barrett), a comforting text about God's goodness, is arranged for 3-5 octaves of handbells. Rhythmic vitality comes for a feeling of 6/8 in the midst of the 3/4 writing. This can be taught to ringers by drilling the bass clef rhythm in measures 35-40 with the I want to be in America rhythm from Westside Story. Although there are no bell changes in this arrangement, interest for the ringers and listeners comes from the variety of techniques including martellato, thumb damps, swings, and mallet work (on the table, suspended, and rolls!). Set a in a key that is comfortable for congregational singing, this arrangement works well with an optional acoustic guitar, bass, and cajon (box drum).

15th Century French Carol In this vivacious and harmonically interesting 3-7 octave setting, Cynthia Dobrinski makes use of the theme and variations form with optional 3-6 octaves handchimes, flute, and tambourine adding extra color. Contrast abounds with martellatos, martellato lifts, vibratos, echoes, mallets, mallet rolls, brush damps, plucks, shakes, and a swing used in a variety of moods from vivace to a lyrical andante. Though the theme is in a minor key, the lyrical variation is in the parallel major, and after the minor main theme returns, a rousing coda takes the piece back to the major key for a joyful conclusion.

Strangely, Soothing focuses on rippled rolls in an unstable, modal setting. The voices meander about atypically, achieving an equal parts mixture of empty movements and functional, directional ones.  This piece is part of my collection of marimba solos intended for beginning four-mallet students. If you want a Maynard or Buddy chart, look elsewhere. This series of charts uses nothing more complicated than eighth notes, are not frantic or screamers, extreme ranges and are hemi-demi-semi-quaver free. They depend on intonation and the players being not intimidated by what he is asked to play. There is no contest to see how high you can go before you need oxygen , how many notes you can play in 9 seconds or before your bell overheats , or how long it takes the audience to cover their ears
Relaxed and confident players always play more in tune. Good harmonies, lines and realistic rhythm patterns will produce a good result that will swing and be enjoyed by player and listener alike.
