This is the 2nd movement of my 5 movement Holston Spring suite for trombone quartet.  The other movements are: Holston Spring, The Railway Bridge, Turtles Sunning on the Shore, and the River Rolls On.  All are available at SMP press.  his movement depict a quiet shoreline mush like ones observed as the settlers drifted down the Holston River in their Flatboats.  Give a listen and imagine a quiet river journey.

Noble and stately, Processional March is written for your second year beginning Band.  The elements of this piece include dynamic contrasts, varying articulations, and a new time & key signature that is often not seen in first year literature, while maintaining an appropriate range for your students—for reference, the clarinets are under the break, with their highest note being the 3rd line Bb and the lowest being the B-natural below the staff.  Processional March is written in 2/4, with the first half of the piece in Eb and the second in Bb. With a tempo marking of Moderato {quarter note = 108}, this march comes in under 3 minutes, making this piece an attainable piece to learn for any upcoming concert. The rhythmic structure of this piece is strict quarter and 8th note rhythms for all wind instruments. The snare drum part also has the same rhythmic structure, but also includes 9-stroke rolls, flams, flam-taps and paired 8th-two 16th rhythms. The percussion section has only four parts–Crash Cymbals, Snare/Bass Drum and Glockenspiel—making this ideal for any sized percussion section.

Processional March follows an |:AA:|-B-C form. Throughout the piece, each instrument visits the harmonic structure beneath the melody, as well as playing the melodies featured in the different sections. Part-wise, all of the wind instruments are written in a comfortable range and have unison parts, with the flutes, clarinets and & trumpets having certain measures divided into two parts, still maintaining unison rhythms.  The flutes are divided specifically into Flute 1 and Flute 2/Oboe, which is ideal if you do not have an oboe in your beginning band.  Students will enjoy this straight forward march and directors will find rehearsing it to be enjoyable and allows for the teaching of newer techniques and skills to advance their band’s level of playing!

Movin’ Thru is a fun, jazzy, bluessy shuffle tune; which is based on the 12 bar B-flat blues form. Movin' Thru could be a fun concert opener or closer! Depending on how many solos are taken the duration of this piece will vary. This piece is enjoyable for beginners as well as experience musicians. Beginners are encourage to just improvise off of the melody as well as the concert B-flat scale.
This piece focuses on unison playing and a bit of rhythmic independence. At the beginning, player II – does not need to play the rhythm exactly, but should focus on creating a round and strong sound! The director may choose to add piano tremolo’s, cymbal rolls or anything else during the �rst measure! Bars 12 and 13 need to be rhythmically accurate, chiefly for part I and part II. If part II are trumpet players they need to make sure that they take-out their harmon mute for those bars as it will give an extra punch! The original was written in 4/4 time or sometimes written in cut-time. This arrangement is unique in that it is written as a jazz waltz; which Gershwin would later play on various piano rolls. The Roger Williams performance; on which this arrangement is based; follows Gershwin's example.

Summertime is an aria composed in 1934 by George Gershwin for the 1935 opera Porgy and Bess. The lyrics are by DuBose Heyward, the author of the novel Porgy on which the opera was based, and Ira Gershwin.

The song soon became a popular and much-recorded jazz standard, described as without doubt ... one of the finest songs the composer ever wrote ... Gershwin's highly evocative writing brilliantly mixes elements of jazz and the song styles of blacks in the southeast United States from the early twentieth century

Described by the Los Angeles Times as one of the most popular instrumentalists of the mid-20th century, and the rare instrumental pop artist to strike a lasting commercial chord, Williams had 22 hit singles–including the chart-topping Autumn Leaves in 1955 and Born Free in 1966–and 38 hit albums between 1955 and 1972.

He was a Navy boxing champion, played for nine U.S. Presidential administrations, and had a gold Steinway & Sons grand piano model named in his honor.

This is the fifth and final movement of my Holston Spring Suite for Trombone Quartet.  The first four movements are: Holston Spring, The Shoreline, The Railway Bridge, and Turtles Sunning on the Shore.  All are available on SMP Press. As the settlers kept floating along the river became swifter and more unpredictable.  Many of the 1st settlers in this area came from Scotland and Ireland.  This movement has a definite Scottish/Irish flair.  One can just hear the pipes throughout this piece.  .
