A reharmonization of the well known text. There are many cheery arrangements of this song, which never made much sense to me. This arrangement bucks that trend in favor of a more serious and contemplative take- reflective of the faithful nature and emotional weight present in the text. Without overcomplicating things for listeners, the reharmonization of this text brings out a more introspective character. This piece is great if youre looking for something familiar for your audience, but also want to surprise them with something new.

Recordare (from Requiem (K. 626) - Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart/Franz Xaver Sussmayr - Saxophone Sextet - Advanced/Intermediate - Digital Download. Hauntingly beautiful is how the Recordare from Mozart's Requiem is often described. Originally written for an orchestra and four vocal soloists, it has now been transcribed by Regis Bookshar for a Saxophone Sextet, consisting of 1 Soprano Saxophone, 3 Alto Saxophones and 2 Tenor Saxophones, and would be a wonderful addition to any music library. This arrangement will provide students with the opportunity to practice breath control because of its long, sustained phrases, This selection could be performed for concerts, recitals and church services and is suitable for high school and college students but professional musicians would also enjoy playing this arrangement. Included are a score and a complete set of parts (28 pages). The Regis Bookshar Trumpet Ensemble has performed the Trumpet Quintet version of the Recordare for funerals, providing beautiful, introspective music for the occasion. There is some controversy surrounding the circumstances of the Requiem's composition because Mozart died before he could complete it. Count Franz von Walsegg had commissioned a Requiem Mass but Mozart had received only half of the payment in advance. So, upon his death on December 5th, 1791, his widow, Constanze, wished to have the work completed secretly by someone else and submit it to the count as having been completed by Mozart to collect the final payment. Joseph von Eybler was one of the first composers to be asked to complete the score and had worked on a number of movements but felt unable to complete the remainder and gave the manuscript back to Constanze Mozart. The task was then given to another composer, Franz Xaver Sussmayr. Sussmayr borrowed some of Eybler's work in making his completion, added his own orchestration to other movements and added several new movements which a Requiem Mass would normally comprise. He then added a final section by adapting the opening two movements which Mozart had written to the different words which finish the Requiem Mass, which according to both Sussmayr and Mozart's wife, was done according to Mozart's directions. The completed score, initially by Mozart but largely finished by Sussmayr, was then dispatched to Count Walsegg complete with a counterfeited signature of Mozart dated 1792. Despite the controversy over how much of the music is actually Mozart's, the commonly performed Sussmayr version has become widely accepted by the public, and is considered one of Mozart's finest compositions. The Recordare is considered by many people to be one of the most beautiful compositions in Mozart's entire catalogue. Regis Bookshar, a trumpet player, has performed the Requiem in concert with a full orchestra, soloists and a chorus and felt that other musicians should have the opportunity to play the hauntingly beautiful Recordare as well. So, in addition to this arrangement for a Saxophone Sextet, he has made quite a few other arrangements of this beautiful composition. The Planets, written between 1914 and 1917 by the English composer Gustav Holst, premiered at the Queen's Hall in London, on September 29, 1918 for an invited audience of about 250 people. In the fourth movement, Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity, Holst portrays Jupiter's supposedly characteristic abundance of life and vitality. Nobility and generosity are allegedly characteristics of those born under Jupiter, and in the slower, middle section marked Andante Maestoso, perhaps the most well-known theme from The Planets (and the theme on which this arrangement is based), Holst provides a broad tune embodying these traits. In 1921, Holst adapted the theme to fit the patriotic poem I Vow to Thee, My Country by Cecil Spring Rice, and was written as a unison song with orchestra. It did not appear as the hymn tune until 1926, when Holst harmonized this melody, named Thaxted, named after the English village where he had lived for many years. Holst's friend Ralph Vaughan Williams included it in Songs of Praise. It has since been performed at numerous occasions, most notably for the wedding of Prince Charles and Diana, Princess of Wales in 1981, and also at the funerals of Princess Diana in 1997, Margaret Thatcher in 2013 and Senator John McCain where it was performed at the Washington National Cathedral on September 1, 2018. In addition to being used as the melody for the solemn, patriotic hymn I Vow to Thee, My Country, other settings of this hymn tune also include O God, Beyond All Praising, by Michael Perry in 1982, O Spirit All Embracing by Delores Dufner in 1995 and We Praise You and Acknowledge You, O God, a paraphrase of the Te Deum Laudemus by Stephen P. The original composition was written in D Major but Regis Bookshar has transposed it to Bb Major, making it a little easier for many modern musicians. Included are a score and a complete set of parts (13 pages). The 17th century composer, Henry Purcell, is generally considered to be one of the greatest English composers of his generation. His Sonata for Trumpet and Strings in D Major, composed in 1694, was probably written for the London Theatre, where a fine tradition of trumpet playing had developed. Purcell almost certainly had in mind either John Shore or his brother, William, the most renowned trumpet players in England at the time. The trumpets of the time were normally tuned in D and there were no valves on the Baroque trumpets, so they were limited in the number of notes that they could play. The term Sonata here probably means no more than a piece of incidental music and looks forward to the style that would become the solo concerto where soloist and strings are pitted against each other but also looks back to an older type of instrumental music which emphasized equality between members of the ensemble. The Nutcracker is an 1892 two-act ballet with a score by Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky. It has enjoyed enormous popularity since the late 1960's and is performed by countless ballet companies, primarily during the Christmas season, especially in North America. Tchaikovsky's score has become one of his most famous compositions. Some critics have called it astonishingly rich in detailed inspiration and from beginning to end, beautiful, melodious, original and characteristic. The ballet's first complete performance outside Russia took place in England in 1934. The first complete United States performance was on December 24, 1944, by the San Francisco Ballet. It was such an enormous success that the San Francisco Ballet has presented The Nutcracker every Christmas Eve and throughout the winter season, debuting new productions in 1944, 1954, 1967 and 2004. In Salt Lake City, it has been performed every year since 1963. The New York City Ballet gave its first annual performance in 1954. In addition to annual live stagings of the work, many productions have also been televised or released on home video.

The Nutcracker continues to be one of Tchaikovsky's most popular compositions and contains some of his most memorable works. Tchaikovsky made a selection of eight of the numbers from the ballet before the ballet's December 1892 premiere, forming The Nutcracker Suite, Op. 71a, and is intended for concert performance. The suite was first performed, under the composer's direction, on March 19, 1892. The suite became instantly popular with almost every number encored at its premiere.

A #PopSongLayerUp is designed to be experimented with, taking elements of a song and layering them to see what new harmonies and rhythms can be created. There are multiple ways it can be explored to build confidence, listening skills and focus. This arrangement of O Christmas Tree, or in German, O Tannenbaum, would be a fabulous addition to any music library and could be performed for Christmas concerts and recitals, and, perhaps, even church services. O Christmas Tree is a German Christmas song based on a traditional folk song which was unrelated to Christmas. The custom of the Christmas tree developed in the course of the 19th century, and the song came to be seen as a Christmas carol. The modern lyrics were written in 1824 by the Leipzig organist, teacher and composer, Ernst Anschutz. A tannenbaum is a fir tree. The lyrics do not actually refer to Christmas or describe a decorated tree. Instead, they refer to the fir's evergreen quality as a symbol of constancy and faithfulness.

In this arrangement of O Christmas Tree, Regis Bookshar has kept the basic outline of this familiar song, but has inserted a short interlude, which brings to mind the sound of alphorns, or alpenhorns, instruments which may be made from red pine, or fir trees. and are used by mountain dwellers in the Bavarian Alps. I think that students will enjoy this imitative section in the song. In addition to this version for a Euphonium Quintet, written in Treble Clef, there are also other arrangements of O Christmas Tree available for a variety of instrumental ensembles. There is a version written for a Euphonium Quintet, written in Bass Clef, if you prefer. Please take the time to look for other versions of this composition. It was August 8th, 2016, when Faith’s mother found the suicide note left on her minivan.  It was a heart stopping moment.  The type that slows down time and changes all priorities and perspectives.  On the front side of the paper it said, PLEASE READ in big letters.  On the back was the following…

Dear Mom,

I am writing this to inform you about something I didn’t have the strength to tell you in person.  I have depression.  I know you think that we all go through a stage where we are sad it’s true, but this is not the case.  I thought that I just had a sad time too until I realized I had been thinking about killing myself many times.  I know that this is hard to hear but I felt it was important to tell you something I had been holding back for 5 years.  I hope you can think of me the same after this note, and know that me thinking about killing myself is NOT your fault.

After an immediate trip to the doctor, it was discovered that Faith didn’t have clinical depression but that she suffered from a hormonal imbalance in her body.  She had been waking up in the middle of the night over half of her young life and wandering around while the rest of the family slept.  With a small prescription, and lots of love, Faith headed off to start middle school and a magical year that would follow.

Shortly after this experience, Faith composed a new song called Finding Hope and finished up on three others she had been working on.

This intermediate level arrangement of A Holly Jolly Christmas is an excellent choice if your wanting an arrangement that contains more advanced harmonies for your intermediate students.  It has some simple stride techniques without the wide jumps often associated with arrangements for advanced players, so this arrangement is a great stepping stone to helping students begin to approach this style of writing.  The middle section has students splitting accompaniment chords between their hands written at an easier student level.

I think you will find this arrangement very useful for giving students music that's interesting as well as music that something that reflects the Christmas season.  The music is happy, bright and colorful.

The single word alleluia is used as the basis for harmonic exploration as the slowly moving pulsed a cappella harmonies build and diminish. Feature a soprano soloist or the section on an ethereal descant that elevates the texture to sublime heights.

This piece came about for two different reasons. The initial musical idea evolved while I was working on a short study for piano, so the piece was strictly instrumental.

The other idea stemmed from a discussion with my friend and mentor Dr Phillip Cooke, about why the word “Alleluia is so commonly used in choral music. Apart from the obvious reasons – “Alleluia being a significant word in the sacred music tradition, and so on – we discussed the multiple possibilities a composer has with a word like that, in the sense that different syllables can be stressed, such as alleluia, alleluia or alleluia.

This was something I used as the other structural building block in the composition, and I added “Alleluia as the only word, but with the emphasis moving to different syllables throughout the piece. For me, the setting of a single word like “Alleluia is far from any texts I usually set. The word, however, has a strong anchorage in musical tradition and composers have always set this word in all kinds of different ways.
In this composition, I am interested in the word itself, the build-up of the word, the structure of the music, and adding something to the musical tradition of setting this famous word to music.

This piece was premiered by the University of Aberdeen Chapel Choir at King’s College Chapel in Aberdeen, Scotland. The performance was conducted by their Director of Chapel and Ceremonial Music, Stuart Muir. – Henrik Dahlgren.
