Composed by Chris Gorman. Arranged by Chris Gorman. Classical,Historic. Brass Band. 61 pages. Chris Gorman #910024. Published by Chris Gorman (A0.1321555).

The Tarantella is a rapid dance in 6/8 time, originating in Italy. In the Italian province of Taranto, Apulia, the bite of a locally common type of wolf spider, named tarantula after the region, was popularly believed to be highly venomous and to lead to a hysterical condition known as tarantism. In this theme, the listener can imagine that someone has been bitten by a Tarantula and that person must dance very vigorously to cure the bite. At one point (8 measures before Rehearsal Mark I, the delirious dancer almost comes to a sleepy halt, but manages to summon the strength to finish the dance to become cured.

Composed by Pablo de Sarasate. Arranged by Raymond Fenech. 19th Century,Contest,Festival,Instructional,Multicultural,Romantic Period,World. Score and part. 29 pages. Raymond Fenech #700079. Published by Raymond Fenech (A0.1096206).

Pablo de Sarasate (1844-1908), undoubtedly, is one of the most important and most successful violin virtuosos of the second half of the 19th century and has become immortal through his virtuoso and highly expressive bravura pieces in the world of violin playing. In 1899 Sarasate composed one of his most popular, non-Spanish pieces, 'Introduction & Tarantella' Op. 43, which was published in the following year, even in a version with orchestra accompaniment. The tarantella, a folk dance in 6/8 metre, comes from southern Italy and has developed from dance tunes played in Apulia for people suffering from tarantism. According to popular belief, the bite of a tarantula caused tarantism which was supposed to be cured by wild dancing. The duration of this is 5.18 minutes and it is a difficult level piece.

Pablo de Sarasate (1844-1908), undoubtedly, is one of the most important and most successful violin virtuosos of the second half of the 19th century and has become immortal through his virtuoso and highly expressive bravura pieces in the world of violin playing. His concert programme mostly consisted of his own compositions, even if quite a few works had been dedicated to him by fellow composers and tailor-made for him: for example, 'Symphonie espagnole' by Lalo, 'Scottish Fantasia' by Bruch and violin works by Saint-Saëns and Wieniawski. Salento is a Modern Tarantella. Tarantella is a lively dance in 6/8 time featuring quick steps originating in Taranto Italy. The dance was originally a flirtation one where couples danced in a manner to entice courtship, however it is more known as a dance of hysteria for when a victim was bitten by a spider (tarantula), it was believed that dancing furiously with tambourines would cure them.

This Tarantella is in ternary form and in A minor and the most complicated note value is a quaver and the highest note is top E. I have kept both parts fairly equal throughout and have placed it at Intermediate level, but on the youtube link there is the whole score for you to assess the suitability.

It is ideal as a showpiece, useful for concerts, recitals or simply something a little different to play. It is 2 mins 45 in length
Price is for the score and parts.

TARANTELLA for Eb, four Bb and one Bass Clarinets.  The stories about tarantellas are many and varied. They are southern Italian folk dances. For this piece, I assume we have a woman happily singing the folk song Santa Lucia, lauding the attractions of Naples, when she is bitten by a tarantula wolf spider. She screams, suffering hysteria and pain, and must now frantically dance, perhaps all night, because this is the only way to recover. Finally she can return to the calm singing.

DURATION: 3 minutes or so, depending on how fast the performers can play and how many repeats they have to make.

SKU: A0.1473660

Composed by Reinhold Moritzovich Gliere. Arranged by Ralph Sauer. 20th Century. Score and part. 28 pages. Gordon Cherry #1051376. Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.1473660).

Reinhold Gliere's Intermezzo and Tarantella, Op. 9 is an early work, originally written for Double Bass. The two movements have been beautifully arranged for Horn and Piano by Ralph Sauer. The Intermezzo is lyrical, sensual and Eastern sounding. The Tarantella is a sprightly folk dance from southern Italy.

The curious name comes from the wolf spider or Tarantula whose bite is highly poisonous and in earlier times was believed to cause the victims to engage in a frenzied dance.

The two movements are about nine and a half minutes in length and are appropriate for advanced performers.
