Published by TALLULAH TUNES (A0.933412). 2016 Choral Contest Entry  - In late 2014, Dan Korneychuk, music director at the Bel Air Presbyterian church in Los Angeles, asked me to score one of his favorite poems which was written by Samuel Grossman in 1664. It had been put to music unsuccessfully, some felt, several times in the past. I decided to write a ‘hymn version’ first, much as it would appear in a traditional hymnal. Unfortunately, the text traversed the extremes of emotion in the telling of Christ’s passion rendering the melody inappropriate in places. I decided to keep to the hymn version as much as possible, but when the emotional story differed from the musical one, I used harmonic variation and dissonance, utilizing the wide palette of the orchestra to tell the story. This piece has been performed on Palm Sunday. Published by Niska Music Publishing (A0.950931). Based on the traditional English folk song, Greensleeves, there is a haunting, soulful quality to the melody that inspired me to write this prelude. It starts simply enough with the similar lullaby-like quality found in Away in a Manger, but the minor key makes it less restful and more contemplative in nature. It gradually becomes more complex, adding a harmony above the melody before the first statement of the refrain occurs adding another voice to the chords and ultimately leading to four-part chords. I then transition to a figure in the right hand to represent the twinkling of the stars as the melody is woven into the pattern before reaching a climax with the final statement of the refrain in full-throated adoration. The prelude then draws back in intensity, closing with the twinkling of the stars once again in the right hand and resolving to a major chord.
