This is the case of this Sinfonia, listed as anonymous until that moment in the archives of the Sächsische Landesbibliothek – Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek Dresden (SLUB).The only copy of this work is in the SLUB, as part of the Pisendel collection (Schrank II), the manuscript Mus. 2-R-8, 102, entirely copied by Pisendel. It is very probable that Pisendel copied the sonata during his trip to Italy and his passage through Florence in 1717, where he would meet the crème de la crème of the Florentine violinists: Fanfani and Bitti. Pisendel kept in his collection nine sonatas by Martino Bitti.Bitti’s virtuosity is noted in this work. It is traditionally played on Holocaust Day, which is on the 28th day of the Hebrew month of Nissan in Israel, or January 27th in the rest of the world. Unter Dyne Vyse Shteren (Under the Starry Sky) was written by Avraham Sutskover, a leading Yiddish poet, while trapped in the ghetto of Vilna, in July 1943. Days before the ghetto was destroyed and all the Jews murdered, Sutskover escaped to the forest with his wife. He reached Russia, and in 1947 moved to Palestine. He died in Israel in 2010 at the age of 96. The poem was set to music by Avraham Brodna, a simple laborer in the Vilna ghetto who died in a concentration camp. This is one of four songs for Holocaust Remembrance Day that I have arranged for string quartet. Hatikva (the Hope) is Israel's national anthem. The words are by Naftali Zvi Imber, and the tune is a traditional eastern European tune. You are welcome to try some of my other arrangements. The initial theme presented against that impersonal void, knowing that He's out there, somewhere. Some of this is very difficult for me to describe because this is really about the Triune God, the great creative power, the mover in harmony and cooperation with Himself. The second verse is more grand, the love, the sense of story. And then it gets very, very big, in the way that I AM is always in capitals. Who WAS and IS and evermore shall BE! And in my mind that word BE is light, and just explodes against the blackness into a billion sparkles. And we shrink down to the microcosm for a moment, the wonders of His creative power in the tiny worlds, and it fades to the black of space again. Holy, Holy, Holy, though the darkness hide Thee. The Light that we can't see that would outshine all the stars. More beauty, and then we tumble down the waterfall of Living Water from the Throne of God...in Heaven. The golden palaces and the wonder, the unearthliness, the richness of the life. For a moment it's more simple and I'm reminded of an old hymn being sung in a rustic church. Then a vision of the Cosmic Christ from Revelation giving a benediction, and we're plunged into the chorus of Heaven, the new song of the 144,000. (this part sounds really good on an acoustic piano because the sound physically builds on itself) And it ends as it began...

I guess, because the first one (Can’t Buy Me Love) went so well, I had to keep it going ? (shameless plug alert: CBML is available from both sheetmusicdirect.com and sheetmusicplus.com.) And I Love Her is a great tune, and I tried to find some creative ways to expand on that. It features your most lyrical flugel player, and you’ll need woodwind doubles: 2 flutes, 2 clarinets, and bass clarinet.  Ensemble: This is pretty straightforward: even 8th, bossa-ish vibe. Trumpets 1, 3, and 4 are on flugels full-time, except for the harmon trumpet bit in mm. 70-75. I feel the 5/4 bars as 2+3, and would conduct accordingly. Overall, think mellow, understated, warm/fuzzy on this.  Rhythm Section: I really hear nylon string guitar on this, so please ask your guitarist to bring the extra axe. ?  Piano, guitar, and bass: If there’s a notated paty without chord symbols, please play as written. If it’s chord symbols only, play/comp tastefully, as always. If there are both, you can do either. If the written part supports the ensemble, I’d suggest going that route. I LOVE having guitar and vibes in the rhythm section, but in general I’m not a big fan of having them play off of the same part. So, please observe the “play only if no guitar (or vibes etc.) indications. Drums, I’ve indicated some basic grooves (note the feel change in the bridge) but I trust you. Just keep things tasty and understated. Solo Section: Flugel solo…after the first read-through, you’ll know when it’s just you on the melody, and when your part is doubled. Feel free to play more expressively on the former. There are some short snippets of changes mixed in with the melodic statements; think of these more like fills than the official “solo section” which is mm. 50-80, the AAB of the form. Don’t swing for the fences in spots like mm. 44-48; instead, float on top of the ensemble sound. And, keep things simple from n. 91 out. ? As of this writing, I don’t have a recording of this, other than the MIDI demo. If you end up with a nice recording and would be OK sharing that with me, please reach out!

When an acquaintance of mine, Gay Tregaskis, sent me a poem she’d written and told me the story behind it, I was honored to be able to put her beautiful and touching words to music. The story is best told in her own words: When I was expecting my first baby, I wanted an antique rocking chair. I found one listed in the newspaper that said, ‘old, but loved.’ I remember going to look at it with my husband in November. It was old and worn… the seat springs were broken, the fabric was faded and torn. I loved it! We bought it for a forgotten amount and my sweet mother-in-law had it repaired and re-upholstered for my Christmas gift. Our little son was born on January 31st. I spent hours and hours just rocking God’s little miracle. On Mother’s Day that year, I woke up and just began writing. There were only one or two lines I shifted. It felt like all the babes and parents who ever sat in the old chair wanted me and mommies-to-be to understand the precious moments spent rocking and bonding. It still brings tears to my eyes. These words are a gift given to me for my children and all who they touch. Our moments to share pass on fleet feet… especially with our children.
