German • Danish.Joseph Küffner was born into a family of musicians in Würzburg. He learned to play several instruments including violin, flute, trombone, guitar and also clarinet. Küffner began working as a military musician in the Elector of Würzburg’s orchestra, moved to the court orchestra in the course of secularization (1806–1814) and later returned to military music in the Bavarian army. From 1825 Küffner worked as a teacher, composer and arranger in Würzburg. He composed symphonies, overtures, military and chamber music for wind instruments and strings with piano or guitar accompaniment. Schott also published his clarinet method ‘Principes Élémentaires de la Musique et Gamme de Clarinette suvis de 24 Duos instructifs (...) pour deux Clarinettes, op. 200‘. The Potpourri sur un thème suisse on a Swiss alpine melody was published in 1838 (plate number 2590). The theme is an old yodelling melody. A melodic introduction is followed by a theme and five variations. In the final Rondo, the triad motives of the opening are taken up again.

Important useless but interesting related fact: Brooks is the nephew of Foster Brooks, who made the rounds of '60s TV sitcoms, talkies and variety shows playing a stumbling drunk. Brooks' band talked him out of recording it himself, so he turned it over to Elmo Shropshire (I'm not making this up), who recorded it in 1979. (This is what most people would refer to as a very bad career move on Brooks' part, since he has not otherwise been heard of since.)This version, instrumental only, spares you the silly story ... but everybody reconizes the tune.If you need alternative instrumentation, I'm happy to accommodate. Interestingly, the year before this song was released in 1990, Billy Dean called me and ask about my considering playing piano for him on tour in his band. He was one of the most kind and gracious people I have ever spoken to. At the time I wasn’t as familiar with his music, but after speaking with him I found out he had the number one country video in the country and the next year he released this song which was the CMA Song of the Year. It is a great song I’ve always loved and always wanted to play, so this week I did. BTW, the reason I didn’t was because I was working in a church and wouldn’t be free to travel. Looking back I wish I had. Hope you enjoy it.
