To write this bossa nova, I adapted and arranged material from the opening chorus of J. S. Bach’s St. John Passion.  São João means St. John in Portuguese, in recognition of the Brazilian roots of bossa nova. For me, Bach’s rich and appealing chord progressions and choral melodies, and the steady flow of the music in this chorus, as well as the popularity of Bach among jazz musicians, justify this adaptation. Written June 16, 2024, this is an original piano arrangement of the song by Billy Dean, “Somewhere in My Broken Heart” (originally released by Randy Travis and later as a single by Dean). Interestingly, the year before this song was released in 1990, Billy Dean called me and ask about my considering playing piano for him on tour in his band. He was one of the most kind and gracious people I have ever spoken to. At the time I wasn’t as familiar with his music, but after speaking with him I found out he had the number one country video in the country and the next year he released this song which was the CMA Song of the Year. It is a great song I’ve always loved and always wanted to play, so this week I did. BTW, the reason I didn’t was because I was working in a church and wouldn’t be free to travel. This piece was written as part of many from a fourth year university piano project and it is dedicated to my good friend Elle who was in my studio throughout school. I am lucky to have a great friend who runs a small media company called Persephone Media who graciously created a fantastic music video for this piece during the height of the Covid-19 Pandemic. Published by Luis Cardoso (A0.934364). Entia Imaginaria II, from the Latin imaginary beings 2 is a subject that fascinates me, especially after reading Jorge Luis Borges's Book of Imaginary Beings. I decided to dedicate some of my compositions to this issue. This is the second composition with that title. This three movements composition include: i. Basiliscus (Basilisk) - Legendary reptile reputed to be king of serpents and said to have the power to cause death with a single glance; ii. Unicornis (Unicorn) - Legendary animal that resembles a white horse with a spiraling horn projecting from its forehead. Commonly described as an extremely wild woodland creature, a symbol of purity and grace, which could only be captured by a virgin; iii. Centaurus (Cenaturo)  - Member of a composite race of creatures, part human and part horse. This work was requested to be premiered by the project XL with Telmo Marques (piano)  e Sérgio Carolino (Tuba). Was composed between January and March 2012.
