The music is entirely derived from the opening motif, which occurred to me on the date of my civil partnership anniversary (11 years).It's a simple ditty, but I wanted to try to test the strengths of the players. The parts all cover a wide range, and the players need to be able to sustain the rhythmic pulse in 6/8. Although the tempo is marked <dotted q>=110, it can be played up to 10 BPM faster or slower, depending on the skill of the ensemble.This would make a great addition to a recital programme or a spring or summer concert.

It was inspired by a trip to the Lake District in the North West of England in 2000. The landscape is beautiful and we were blessed with wonderful weather and good friends. Although the piece is continuous, there are distinct sections that cover my impressions of the countryside at different points. These are labelled in the score and parts: The Mountains, Airforce Fly Past, The Ramblers, A Brief Downpour, Windermere, Scafell Pike, Haverthwaite Railway, An Abandoned Farm, The Celtic Influence, Helvellyn and Mr Jeremy Fisher. The piece concludes with a final, brief glimpse of the mountains.Mr Jeremy Fisher refers, of course, to the Beatrix Potter character who was nearly eaten by a fish.This would make an excellent own-choice test piece and, at just over 10 minutes, would make a good piece in an entertainment contest programme. The arrangement follows the Adele version more closely than the Bob Dylan version, but leaves out some of her stylizations. It should be fine for barbershop contests.There are already several barbershop arrangements of the song. My goal was to write one that is accessible for beginning barbershoppers, but still has some fun moments and a musical development that supports the story. I have tried to maintain the quiet and introspective mood of the original, while still giving you the opportunity for some musical contrasts.The back half (which you can't see in the preview) has the third verse as a lead solo and the fourth verse as a lead-tenor duet, with the other parts singing doo-doo accompaniment. The second bridge (the storms are raging) has a higher tessitura and musical intensity than the first one.The arrangement is for male voices. It should also work for a mixed quartet with a male bass.
