This arrangement uses a basic 2 octave set of handbells, tone chimes, hand chimes or belle plates. Beginning simply and building to a triumphant finish, it is three and a half minutes of inspiring music! This piece uses 22 bells, and would work for a small intermediate ensemble (8 or 9 member group who can switch out bells during key changes) or would be an excellent piece for a larger beginning group, where the stately tempo can help build strong ringing skills. Many lyrics have been set to this famous tune, but this arrangement uses the lyrics penned by Isaac Watts titled When I Survey the Wondrous Cross. The psaltery part was designed for a beginning psaltery player and is written in the key of F major with only 1 flat (B♭ = A♯). The piano accompaniment is at the early-intermediate level. The PSALTERY plays the melody for both verses but for the second verse the PSALTERY plays the melody as an echo. To assist those new to reading music notation, two solo parts are included: one is the standard music notation and includes the lyrics for sing along enjoyment. The second solo part is identical to the standard music but instead of lyrics, the note names are provided below each note (example A, B, C…). It was first published in 1811 in the various hymnbooks that came out during the Second Great Awakening with various lyricists credited. Many publications attributed the song's tune to The Ballad of Captain Kidd, a popular, though much older, song and tune at the time. Earlier versions of the text are slightly different, but as with many folk tunes, it is difficult to tell which transcriptions are regional variants and which are errors by the transcriber.This arrangement of the tune by Mark Lewis is for a cappella SATB Ensemble. All four voice parts are featured for a verse with different accompaniment each time. There are key changes to better place the melody in the ranges of each voice and there are moving notes in many background voices through most of the piece. As with many of Mark's arrangements, the outer voices will be pushed towards the extremes of their ranges even though the notes and rhythms are not incredibly difficult. Most intermediate choirs should enjoy performing this piece.
