Pura Alegria Brass Sextet and Keyboard 3 Trumpets, 3 Trombones and Keyboard Composed for the Stirling High School Brass Ensemble, in East London, South Africa MBR 3430 By Eddie Lewis Spice up your brass program with this Latin tinged composition for three trumpets, three trombones and keyboard. Pura Alegria is one of Eddie Lewis’ en clave compositions, where every rhythm from every phrase in the piece is derived from the clave. The clave is a rhythm from west Africa that came to the tropical islands with the slaves. From there, hundreds of years later, the rhythm became the underlying groove for a number of modern Latin dance music styles. Eddie Lewis was exposed to the clave rhythms during a period of twenty years when he was making his living primarily as a salsa trumpet player. While Eddie’s compositions are not salsa, his writing has been forever influenced by that music and the people. And that influence is not limited to only the rhythms. We are only emphasizing the rhythms here because of the prominence of the clave in Pura Alegria. Stirling High School, East London, South Africa Eddie composed Pura Alegria for the students in the brass ensemble at Stirling High School in East London, South Africa. The students prepared it as part of a presentation and Eddie was honored to contribute something for them to work on and perform. The request came from Eddie’s good friend, Leonard Brandt. Leonard is a professional trumpet player in South Africa and also teaches applied brass at the high school. When Eddie was in South Africa for the jazz festival in Grahamstown (2016), Leonard arranged a personal performance of Pura Alegria for him in one of the empty classrooms. The composition was a smashing success and the students and the audience all enjoyed it! Skill Level When Eddie does a commission, he goes to great lengths to map out the skills of the individual players. Often times, his method’s skill levels don’t apply. Please keep in mind that skill levels in published music are not about how good the students are. Students will always have mixed skill sets. That’s part of what it means to be human. We are good at some things and bad at others. So the skills of the individual parts in Pura Alegria are varied, not only from part to part, but from skill to skill. That said, the highest note in the first trumpet part is written high C, and the rhythms are syncopated (because of the clave influence). We would put most of that first part in our Trumpet Pro skill level. The highest note in the second part is written A above the staff. The highest note in the third trumpet part is top line F. Practice Recommendations Pay special attention to the articulations, which can feel a little awkward, but really make the piece. Sometimes the eighth-notes are long and the quarter-notes are short. Other times the quarter-notes are long and the eighth-notes are short. Also be careful with the dynamics. There will be a tendency to play the entire piece too loud. Because it feels like that kind of piece. However, if you play it that way, it will ruin some of the compositional effects. This is especially true for the keyboard. If you are performing with a keyboard, not an acoustic piano, then what’s the amplification that it doesn’t bury the rest of the ensemble. You cannot have the keyboard set to the same volume as you would for a full jazz ensemble class. Other than that, have fun with this piece. The name, Pura Alegria, in English means Pure Joy! The rhythms are delightful and the melodies are infectious.

Jerry wrote several poems during a tour of Italy made up of a group of faculty and spouses. On our last day in Rome...he surprised everyone by performing his new works. The minute he started reading I knew this would be a great text to set to music. This cycle has been performed often in the DFW Tx. area...first by Marsha Anderson, my colleague at North Lake College and later by the young soprano Erin Acorn. Marsha earned a living in Italy for over 20 years as an opera singer and taught me lots of valuable details about the substiles of composing for this vocal style. You can hear her beautiful voice on recordings we made at a performance in the concert hall at UTA Arlington. In retrospect, I like the tempos to relax more than these recordings, so the vocal lines have more time to breath. The cycle also received a positive review by the famous music critic for the Dallas Morning News, Scott Cantrell. Thank you to Scott! This collection of short compositions for brass quintet was conceived specifically to supplement a dearth of appropriate and artistic original compositions for the young aspiring brass quintet.  These pieces are most fitting for a good high school quintet or a beginning college ensemble that wants a conquerable challenge.  With a variety of keys, styles, and tempos, they lend themselves well for deep work on the core ensemble skills of rhythmic accuracy, intonation, and dynamic balance.  These brief works are also quite enjoyable for the professional quintet to perform for ever-popular school shows, or simply to read as a warmup with the focus of improving ensemble skills.  Performance time for all five pieces is approximately five minutes.“Blackhawk” (duration 0:45) was originally composed in D-sharp minor as a melody to be used in Comprehensive Trumpet Skills, Book 9: Sightreading and Transposition (p. 39).  The quintet version is in concert D minor for more manageable execution.  This brisk four-four work is perhaps the most difficult in the collection, with demands of multiple tonguing for all the instruments as well as fairly advanced intervallic jumps.  “Lamb of God” (duration 1:00) is one of many hymn tunes originally composed by Dr. Thrower for use in Comprehensive Trumpet Skills, Book 7: Ensemble Skills (p. 54), intended to be used to tune unisons and octaves.  As a tuning study it was published in the key of F major for B-flat trumpet, or concert E-flat major.  The quintet version retained the original key of concert E-flat.  The reverently subdued four-four tempo makes this the easiest piece in the collection, technically, though the three core ensemble skills listed in the introductory paragraph (rhythm, intonation, and balance) must still be extensively addressed.  The horn part is perhaps the most demanding in “Lamb of God,” with arpeggiated discant lines toward the end.“Summer Solstice” (duration 1:10) was started on June 21, 2023, which was the summer solstice.  It is a bright, cheerful piece in concert F major with a lot of interest in all the parts.  One source of the title’s inspiration came from my family’s new situation living in Tokyo, Japan, where the dawn sky brightens around 4:00 AM on the longest days of the year, which obviously coincide with the summer solstice.  The 70-second piece was completed four days after conception while the long days started at their earliest.“Triumph: Children’s March” (duration 1:00) was the catalyst for this collection.  It started as a cute little brass quintet piece in the key of concert B-flat major, to be performed for children, such as for school concerts.  The cut-time tempo is very brisk for a march, but animated little legs (or a more manageable audience activity of clapping hands) can easily handle the task.  Although the first trumpet part ends up on a high C, there is an alternate note for a more comfortable ending.“Waltzing Puma” (duration 0:30) is an evocative title for an evocative piece.  Like “Blackhawk,” this melody was composed as a melody for Comprehensive Trumpet Skills, Book 9: Sightreading and Transposition (p. 36).  The melodies in that series took on titles of military aircraft, and this one was the helicopter “Puma.”  Since this tune is in a fast three-four, it became the “Waltzing Puma.”  The quintet version retains the original key of concert F minor.

O Setting Sun was commissioned by the Madison Chamber Choir, Madison, Wisconsin, Anthony Cao, conductor, and was premiered on April 20th, 2012. “What is the Grass� was composed for Cappella SF, Ragnar Bohlin, conductor, and is being premiered on tonight’s concert. Facing West was commissioned in celebration of the 75th anniversary of the Golden Gate Bridge by the International Orange Chorale, Zane Fiala, conductor, and was premiered on May 27th, 2012. I first set Whitman to music in 1986,when I adapted part of “When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloomed� as the basis for my composition “Invocation and Dance.� I went on to set “Good-Bye, My Fancy� for Male Chorus and Soprano Saxophone in 1992, and “Song of the Open Road� for Mixed Chorus and Piano in 2004. Like so many composers, I have found the visionary quality of Whitman’s verse inspiring; the vigor and intensity of the poetry seem naturally to draw out music. Facing West is drawn from the Children of Adam book from Walt Whitman's Leaves of Grass. The full title of the poem is Facing West From California's Shores. Though Whitman never visited California, his biographer Justin Kaplan made the insightful observation that he imagined California's shores to be the starting point for a journey through time and culture. Here was Walt, 'a child, very old,' facing home again, looking over to it, joyous, as after long travel, growth, and sleep, asking: 'But where is what I started for, so long ago?/And why is it yet unfound?' The invitation from the International Orange Chorale to compose a piece in honor of the 75th anniversary of the Golden Gate Bridge led me easily and naturally to this great poem. The tone of Facing West is rich and complex, and draws on one of Whitman's favorite themes of using travel to distant lands as a metaphor for spiritual development. In his poem, Whitman strikes notes of reflection, of longing for adventure, and ultimately ends with a question. The continuing relevance of this question is for me beautifully addressed by the contemporary American writer Edmund White in his 1980 book States of Desire. To paraphrase somewhat, White writes: California is where dreams may come true, and the problem it presents is whether, after all, we wanted these particular dreams to be fulfilled - or would we have preferred others? Did we know what price these dreams would exact? Did we anticipate the ways in which they would unsuit us for the business of daily life? Or should our notion of daily life itself be transformed? For Americans, California's coast is as far as one can go in establishing new roots and new ways of living. As a transplanted Midwesterner who has made California his home for nearly three decades, I experience the Golden Gate Bridge as a beautiful monument to the aspirations and dreams of a restless and inventive people, qualities that Whitman's poem captures perfectly. -David ConteDuration: 5:42

Could please anyone answers?  The Strings do play an important part in terms of balance and the one of an extra third corresponding force.My composition language is sometimes folklorist around my Greek heritage, sometimes around tonal centers, and sometimes simple within a few key notes, evolves around programmatic ideas that I get from every day living.  Apostolos Paraskevas

It seems that both brothers earn their livings mostly by teaching in their respective subjects for the rest of their lives. Daniel de Moivre had early training in France in recorderand composition, and in England he was known as one of the bestrecorder players at the time, together with Paisible, Banister Loilet and others.The solo suites that follow are of moderate technical difficulty andform a good basis for advancing the recorder technique to higher levels. But primarily are well made baroque dance tunes that can beused for both study and recreation.All ornaments are marked as trills starting usually on the upper note,but some of them can be interpreted as mordents or inverted mordents. There are quite a few baroque-rondeau movements withinthese suites, marked with double bar lines but without repeats.Repeats are optional here, and it depends on personal aesthetics. I find the following scheme of playing baroque- rondeau movements quite satisfactory: AA-BB-A-CC-ALegato marks and other slurs were not included in the original andare left to the performer’s decision.All tempi are only editorial suggestions which can be ignored to a reasonable degree.This volume has been created with decorated and undecorated pages and with individual front covers for each suite so that the user can add or omit pages at will and create his own book designs.The mp3 sample contains various movements from all suites.Socrates ArvanitakisLondon 2021.

The clarinet quartet arrangement of Break Forth, O Beauteous, Heavenly Light, was made for the 2018 Holiday Contest Entry. Martin Luther developed the Lutheran chorale, a religious hymn sung in four-part harmony by the congregation as part of the service. Break Forth, O Beauteous, Heavenly Light was written by Johann Rist and Johann Schop in the mid-17th century, so that by 1734, when Bach included it in his Christmas Oratorio, it was well known to congregations. The harmonization, however, is Bach ‘s own. The arrangement remains faithful to the original facsimile of Bach. It is transposed for a modern clarinet quartet.  Variations in loudness and the duration of musical notes are the basic elements to musical expression. A few interpretation symbols where added to shorten some of the notes.  Breathing between music phrases is notated.  and the final was stretched with one more bar for a ralentando effect.  This details are only suggestions for an interpretation.    The piece is appropriate for beginner students or amateurs and without any doubt very pleasant to listen when played by an experienced ensemble. One in F for a big harp, one in Eb for medium size and the one in F for a little 3 oct. lap harp a very similar one to the one that usually O`Carolan used to perform. The melodic bass played with the left hand demands a little bit of coordination but the arrangement is focused in the main melody and is very easy to perform in all this 3 versions. The piece is so beautiful that I recommend it to be played always twice in a row.  Some interpretation symbols are used as a performance suggestion. It is relatively easy to perform and once thoroughly learned and played „Live you will experience a great rewarding feed back of its magical power upon the public. There are 3 versions on this file. One in F for the pedal or chromatic Harp, one in Eb for a diatonic harp and one in F for a little 3 octave gothic harp. Some interpretation symbols where used in the score as a performance suggestion. Most of the score is left to the interpretation of the artists involved, particularly the use of fingering. Feel Free to apply in this piece the Art and technic that expresses entirely your individual skills.  Have fun! The score was written on Finale. The sound file is the chromatic version in F, it was produced with samplers from Garrison and conceived merely as an audio support for the presentation of the score.
