Zellev Music #1070918. Published by Zellev Music (A0.1494322). Key Signature: F? He then taught piano there himself from 1885 until 1918, whilst also serving as conductor of the Mariinsky Theatre until 1911.This theatre saw the premieres of the operas composed by his teacher and mentor Rimsky-Korsakov, and he was also the conductor at the Russian premiere of Wagner's opera Tristan und Isolde. In 1908, he conducted the Paris premiere of Modest Mussorgsky's opera Boris Godunov. From 1918 to 1922, he was the director of the Music-drama school of Mykola Lysenko in Kiev, where, amongst others, Vladimir Horowitz was a pupil in his masterclasses. He returned to the Moscow Conservatory in 1922, teaching there until his death. Other famous pupils of his include Simon Barere, Maria Yudina and Maria Grinberg. He died in Moscow. As a pianist, he played many of the compositions of his Russian contemporaries. His compositions, which showed the influence of Frédéric Chopin and Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, include a symphony, pieces for solo piano, an Allegro de Concert for piano and orchestra, and lieder. His virtuoso pieces for piano in particular are enjoying something of a renaissance in recent years. He was the uncle of Heinrich Neuhaus and first cousin, once removed of Karol Szymanowski (Felix and Karol's father, Stanislaw Szymanowski, were cousins).(Wikipedia).

Piano,Vocal,Voice - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1034932 By Neil Sedaka. By Howard Greenfield and Neil Sedaka. Arranged by Allcanplay Piano Music. Contemporary,Pop. Score. 7 pages. Allcanplay Piano Music #6660015. Published by Allcanplay Piano Music (A0.1034932). This is a full 45-measure rendition of the slow (1975) version of Neil Sedaka's signature song spanning 6 octaves in the keys of G and Ab in Allcanplay format.Allcanplay is a play-by-picture system created in the early 1980s that:* Lets beginners play popular tunes and develop good finger coordination before or while learning to read music.* Allows more experienced pianists to play songs that stretch their current sight-reading ability.* Permits sight readers to convert difficult songs into picture form and improve their music-reading skills in the process. Each note of a song is indicated by finger letters (e.g., T=Thumb) and timing (e.g., 1+2+) marked on stacked keyboard diagrams with rainbow-shaded octaves that make it easy to tell them apart. (See link below to rainbowize your keyboard to match.)Unlike lighted-key or falling-note music, Allcanplay doesn't disappear after you play it. It's like a chord chart or guitar tablature but for every note in a song.To gain a feel for the expressive tempo of this song, here’s the link to an audio performance by the master himself, Neil Sedaka: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KUPQbdqeqW8Allcanplay Piano Music Links* For free lessons, songs, & videos: http://www.allcanplaypiano.net * To rainbowize your keyboard: https://maxlearning.net/Piano/RainbowKeyboard.pdf* To be notified of new material: https://www.facebook.com/allcanplaypiano

Brass Quintet Bass Trombone,Horn,Trumpet,Tuba - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1472617 Composed by Bill Conti. Arranged by Mary Clark. Classical,Film/TV. 11 pages. Second Wind Music #1050268. Published by Second Wind Music (A0.1472617). “Philadelphia Morning” is a powerfully expressive composition that sets the tone for a scene early in the movie Rocky when the main character has just found out the he will get to fight the world champion boxer and sets out for a training run in the gritty city streets of Philadelphia at 4 a.m. on a dark, cold, dreary winter day. (click here to see a clip of this scene from the movie) This beautifully written piece is penetrating and pensive in describing the battle within, the solitude of it, the impossibility at hand, and generally, the struggle involved in pushing oneself. There is a powerful but subtle orchestration here; the sound of a kind of musical undertow — an undertow that is pulling our hero down, as if giving him leaden legs, or of running in quicksand. But there is also a twinkle of possibility.  At the end, the [music] trails off and there is uncertainty in the air.” [From:  Jack Doyle, “Philadelphia Morning: 1976-1977,” PopHistoryDig.com, March 25, 2015.]This brass quintet arrangement of Philadelphia Morning would work well as a short concert piece that showcases the expressive qualities of the French horn as well as that of the whole ensemble. This piece has a quiet, pensive, somewhat moody tempermanent. While this arrangement is not technically challenging (other than the range for the horn part noted below), the lean scoring and soft dynamics requires the ensemble to pay close attention to balance and play as one in style, tone quality, and expressiveness.  Phrases passing from one player to another need to flow as if being played on a piano.  The expressive opening eight-bar horn solo, which is a direct transcription from the movie score, is mostly unaccompanied and ranges up to a high b-flat so a strong, confident horn player is needed – but they will surely enjoy playing this elegantly written passage.  (The film soundtrack recording features Vincent DeRosa on horn.)    The bass trombone part can be played on a tuba.

Solo Guitar - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1237543 Composed by Johann Sebastian Bach. Arranged by Richard Hirsch. Baroque,Christian,Multicultural,Spiritual,World. Individual part. 11 pages. Richard Hirsch #833059. Published by Richard Hirsch (A0.1237543). I offer an arrangement of Bach’s all-time favourite Jesus, Joy of Man’s Desiring in an African inspired rendering for solo classical or acoustic guitar. The arrangement uses lots of natural harmonics in an attempt to mimic the African kalimba style of music. The arrangement goes in 4/4 time in polyrhythm with a second tier of accents at 2, 2&, and 4 with a slight swing. The polyrhythm makes the final chord sound like an upbeat! The low bases are notated as quarter notes and should be played so that they do not ring out. They are not muted (staccato), except where notated, but they should be kept short to give the piece a bouncy character. The arrangement contains the main melody and chorus sections of the original in G major, although I have changed the original in a number of ways. The first melody and chorus section in G major is prefaced by several bars of natural harmonics and is repeated only after the melody and chorus section in the key of A minor. Natural harmonics appear in many places in the piece interwoven with Bach’s original melody and chorus. I think the natural harmonics give the piece a really glorious ring. The present arrangement incorporates many sections of a sister arrangement of the piece that I published recently that follows the original more closely and works as an introduction to the music with extensive left and right hand fingerings and tablature for intermediate students of guitar. This arrangement, considering the many natural harmonics, staccatos, tempo, and swing, is perhaps better suited for advanced intermediate students of classical or acoustic guitar. With that in mind, I therefore refrain from any extensive left and right hand fingerings for the present arrangement. The piece is a real joy to play and listen to! The tempo for the present arrangement has been set to 140 bpm. I think the pace gives a real swing to the music. The piece may however be played at a faster tempo, e.g. Presto, or somewhere in between. With this great music you can hardly go wrong. The title I have chosen for the arrangement aims to be a play on words as in many English speaking parts of the world the name Bach often rhymes with the word ‘back’ as in a return to some place or time. ‘Bach to Africa’ is then an allusion to humanity’s primordial roots in Africa. Rejoice!

Piano,Vocal,Voice - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1228302 Composed by Thomas Oboe Lee. 20th Century,21st Century,Classical,Contemporary. Score. 57 pages. Thomas Oboe Lee #824420. Published by Thomas Oboe Lee (A0.1228302). Program note.  I am a foodie.  I love all kinds of food.  I especially relish the experience of trying new dishes found at cutting-edge restaurants.  But I am also a fan of traditional cooking at a local trattoria or bistro.   I also love to cook in my own kitchen, for family and friends.  I used to make Chinese food, but after spending a year in Italy as a Fellow at the American Academy in Rome, 1986-87, I became a convert to Italian cuisine.   These days I basically only cook Italian.  My teachers are Marcella Hazan, Lidia Bastianich, and the ubiquitous 60-Minute Gourmet author, Pierre Franey.  So when I recently came upon this ancient cookbook, De re coquinaria by Marcus Gavius Apicius, AD 14-37, I immediately thought I would set the recipes from the book into a song cycle for tenor and piano. There are ten chapters in the book.  But there is a dispute as to whether Books IX and X were written by someone else other than Apicius.  With that in mind, I am only setting recipes from the first eight books, or chapters.I. Epimeles - The Diligent Cook - Fine spiced wineII. Sarcoptes - The Butcher - Brain sausageIII. Cepuros - The Gardener - For digestion and inflammationIV. Pandectes - Miscellanea - Smelt pie or sprat custardV. Ospreon - Legumes - Peas, supreme styleVI. Aeropetes - The Fowl - Crane or duck with turnipsVII. Piano Solo - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.972672 Composed by James Siddons. Christian,Concert,Contemporary,Easter. Score. 17 pages. James Siddons Music and Writings #6671707. Published by James Siddons Music and Writings (A0.972672). Sonata Hymnica No. 5 has the subtitle Scenes of Calvary. Landscape paintings and printed illustrations of the Cross of Calvary were ubiquitous in Christian literature in the late 19th century, so it not surprising that allusions to such art are found in the texts of hymns. The three hymns heard in Sonata Hymnica No. 5 all evoke some sense of seeing, in a spiritual way, the scene of the Crucifixion. Sonata Hymnica No. 5 opens with a sturdy and rugged statement of When I Survey the Wond’rous Cross, written by Isaac Watts in 1707. This poem continues: On which the Prince of Glory dy’d, . . . See from His Head, his Hands, his Feet, Sorrow and Love flow mingled down!   In the United States, music educator Lowell Mason (1792-1872) composed a tune in 1824 for singing Watts’ hymn. Named HAMBURG tune, it was an adapted form of some Gregorian chant in Church Mode I. This combination of poem and tune became very popular; so much so, that by the 1880s, elaborations of it appeared in print. The most enduring is the pairing of Watts’ poem and Mason’s tune with a simple camp meeting song, At the Cross, to be a refrain. It has the phrases, At the cross, where I first saw the light . . . It was there by faith I received my sight. The centerpiece of Sonata Hymnica No. 5 is the tune TOPLADY, the usual tune for singing Rock of Ages. This tune was composed in 1830 by Thomas Hastings (1784-1872), an associate of Lowell Mason in New York. He wrote hymns and hymn tunes, published hymnals, and worked tirelessly to elevate choral singing in churches. Hastings indicated that he intended his tune for singing Rock of Ages by naming it after the author of the hymn-poem, the English pastor Augustus Toplady (1740-1778). The Rev. A. B. Grosart wrote in a memorial that Toplady was no poet or inspired singer, but an impulsive, rash-spoken, reckless preacher who could nonetheless picture vanishing gleams of imaginative light in his hymnic verses. A better impression was gained by poet A. C. Benson (1862-1925), who, upon hearing Rock of Ages sung at William Gladstone’s funeral at Westminster Abbey in 1898 --- a rare State funeral attended by several members of the British Royal family --- wrote, To have written such words which should come home to people in moments of high, deep, and passionate emotion  . . . there can hardly be anything worth doing better than that. This high compliment came from the poet who, a few years later, would write the words of Elgar’s Coronation Ode for King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra. A camp meeting song, a rash-spoken English pastor, two American music educators, a State funeral at Westminster Abbey --- such is the wide world of influence and inspiration of these three Scenes of Calvary.

Published by Sally Whitwell (A0.873041). My family were early adopters on Compact Disc technology. Whilst my school peers in the late 80s and early 90s were collecting tapes for their VHS video recorders, my family were collecting hi-fidelity CD recordings of classical masterworks. Three of these CDs stick in my mind; a period instrument performance of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons performed by Trevor Pinnock and The English Concert; a recording of the 1812 overture which boasted Real Cannons (and also warned listeners against setting the volume too high because it might damage the equipment!); and A feather on the breath of God, an album of works by Hildegard performed by Gothic Voices with soloist Emma Kirkby. Thus began my life long love affair with the life and works of Hildegard. I have been performing this particular Hildegard chant O Virtus Sapientiae in solo piano recitals since around 2014. Basically, I have been freely improvising on it, so it’s different each time. Some ideas formed during those improvisations which have really stuck in my brain. I’ve transferred some of these into this a cappella work.  In una via, quae habet vitam  (In one path, which gives life) O Strength of Wisdom Who circling circled, enclosing all Growing from the earth Soaring in the heights One life-giving path Of omnipresent light Laus tibi sit, sicut te decet O Sapientiae  (Praise to you, as is fitting,  O Wisdom)

Small Ensemble Cello Solo - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.596449 Composed by Daniel Hay. Classical,Contemporary,Multicultural,World. Individual part. 1 pages. Daniel Hay Music #5809103. Published by Daniel Hay Music (A0.596449). Composer Daniel Hay wrote this piece in honor of the efforts of Oprah Winfrey in building schools for girls in Africa. Twice Mr. Hay sent notice to the staff of Oprah yet never received acknowledgment from them. The attached audio file is voiced by the computer as a cello. The attached YouTube link is a practice session by the composer outside his hand-built cabin in the mountains of Washington state where he lived for three years. It is played on a Ganassi style Alto-in-G recorder handcrafted by Bodil Diesen of Norway. Please note that due to brain damage the composer is no longer able to differentiate fingering and notes to play instruments in their correct pitch ranges, so this is played on a G-pitched instrument but music is read as C fingered (Soprano and Tenor). As solo music it makes no difference but an Alto player will probably notice the pitches don't match the fingerings they are seeing. The sound file is voiced in piano. Cello, Bassoon or other bass clef instruments are appropriate.
