Once on board the train, the boy meets other children from various backgrounds who are all wanting to see Santa, as well as a magical train crew, headed by the Conductor. 'The Polar Express' stars Tom Hanks, providing voices and motion-capture for 6 characters, including the Conductor and Santa Claus. With an incredible original soundtrack from Hollywood legend Alan Silvestri, combined with other iconic Christmas recordings, 'The Polar Express' became an instant hit, and has embedded itself in Christmas popular culture.'When Christmas Comes To Town' is performed in the film by the characters Billy the Lonely Boy and Hero Girl, with singing voices provided by Matthew Hall and Meagan Moore, and tells the story of their differing perspectives of Christmas, with a shared desire to see Santa. And she thinks: Strange is my fate, that brings me here…; a fate that compels her, for some reason, to reflect on her past, bringing her back to the moment in which she decided to leave away in silence. A destiny that, even today, surprises her to rethink about that love but without indicating a new way to go, because, even if all that love, I have swept it away ..., it hurts not to think about you. In the refrain, a hope emerges (underlined by the opening of the melody): I will not lose you, beyond time and distance I will go ...; hope that is confirmed in the last stanza: It is clear my destiny ... All great myths take place in legendary places - Mount Olympus, Atlantis, Camelot, Asgard and Cimmeria - the home of the great fictional hero Conan the Barbarian. The text used in this piece comes from a short poem by Robert E. Howard which he wrote while living in Boerne, Texas inspired by the terrain of the hill country. Howard uses incredibly descriptive text to paint the picture of the land of Cimmeria such as sombre hills, gaunt land and woodlands brooding. The verse then switches to the perspective of the narrator who struggles to recall what name was used for him when he existed in this ancient land. In setting this text I aimed to use a dense, sombre harmonic texture to illustrate this hazy memory of a distance place. When the voice of narrator is heard the music switches into a rough, barbaric chant and then back to the dark texture. The use of bassoon and synthesizer layered under the chorus should lend an other-wordly sound to the piece.
