English • German.Ethel Harraden was born in Islington, London, in 1857; she died in Leamington Spa in 1917. She is said to have begun composing music from the age of five. She went on to study piano and composition at the Royal Academy of Music in London and then embarked on a successful career as a pianist and composer of songs, operettas and other stage works. Several of her operettas were performed on stage in London to great acclaim. Following her marriage in 1892 she moved to Leamington Spa, where she was kept increasingly busy with social obligations but nevertheless remained active as a performer and composer. This short piece Tristesse with the subtitle Romance sans Paroles is an expressive and lyrical salon piece. It was published in 1886 as plate no. 24181.

Stewart (A0.1307911). “Gloucestershire Wassail�, is an old song, sung around the Feast of Yule, by parties who go about dressed with boughs and ribbons, carrying a bowl, which they expect to be filled with beer or cider, and a toast put therein.  It is still customary in many parts of England to hand round the wassail, or health-bowl, on New Year’s Eve. The tune of this song is traditional popular music of the day – a universal favourite (tune) in Gloucestershire.  This arrangement of “Gloucestershire Wassail�, traditionally strophic in structure, has been changed to a rondo form with the original popular tune serving as the refrain or chorus and the text of the many verses serving as just that – a verse, giving emphasis to the text as sung by carousing, rural merry-makers to their feudal lords.  It is scored for a 4-part SATB ensemble with piano accompaniment.  Performance time: 4:55+-.

He possibly received his musical tutoring from a former master of the choristersat St. Lazare, as by the evidence of his few surviving works, he was trainedin the Palestrina school. His slim ouvre survives in but one manuscript, theMss.Autin.Res. 127.a, presently in the Bibliteque Nationale. There are two surviving masses (untitled) and six motets, one incomplete.This Kyrie is taken from the second of the mass settings, and employs as cantus firmus the chant later to be know as the Missa da Angelus (a nineteenth century moniker). This arrangement approximates theperformance style of Alternatim, used in a number of different waysthroughout Europe at the time. It provides today, an ideal way of forming afruitful liturgical dialogue between the Congregation, Choir and Cantor.Ed. note; some of the texural underlay is conjectural and unclear in the mss.
