It takes students to consider color as a technical and formal expression that varieties of tone colors, as well as tonal centers, are explored. Originally modal, the tune by the aboriginal people takes the rocking baby as the inspiration and is embellished with a wide range of ornaments, string changes, and tonal centers, which are all relevant to Chinese traditional music and contemporary music.     CMTNC (Chinese Music Teachers Association of Northern California) Commission Series is a collection of musical works for a set of twelve pieces for violin, piano, cello, and clarinet (three pieces for each instrument written for beginner, intermediate, and intermediate/advanced students; with or without piano accompaniment). Through this series, student performers and their audiences are reminded of life experiences through the reminiscence and creative process of classic Chinese music literature and well-known folksongs.

A Farmer's Boy is an example of a piece that gained fame and popularity through the oral traditions of singing in the United Kingdom during the 19th Century. It first appeared in print in an 1832 catalogue of street songs collected James Catnach, and appeared in many other printed books during that century. There are many tunes that are associated with the words, the most popular of these being 'Ye Sons of Albion', a patriotic tune associated with the Napoleonic Wars, that later become extremely popular as regimental march tunes for the Duke of Edinburgh and Prince of Wales Regiments.At the beginning of the 20th century legendary Folk Collector Percy Grainger recorded the song on phonograph, the song performed by a M. Tandy of Winchcombe, Gloucestershire. Just under 50 years later the great Musicologist/Ethnomusicologist Alan Lomax recorded a version that can be heard in his vast recording archive. Over time the tune followed people to other Commonwealth countries and numerous other versions appeared.This is a version that attempts to faithfully recreate the performances of bands in the late 19th Century period.

Are you my friend or the friend of the tiger?! The piece has a few obstacles of its own. Published by Kreechur Kumfort Publishing (A0.833833). Storm at King’s Pointe was composed for the Buena Vista Middle School Honor Band at Buena Vista University in Storm Lake, Iowa. Originally planned for February 2017, this event ironically was canceled two years in a row due to severe weather. Located on the eastern edge of Storm Lake is a water park-themed resort called King’s Pointe Resort. This composition depicts a summer storm as it moves over the Iowa hills and across the normally-placid lake. Distant thunder is first heard as dark clouds approach, covering blue Iowa sky. Soon, the drama of drenching rain, powerful wind, and flashes of lightening is represented in an aggressive minor melody. Changes in intensity common to a Midwest storm is reflected within the composition including a quiet respite in the middle and storm-like thunderous percussion breaks.   Fully accessible by music ensembles from middle school on up, Storm at King’s Pointe is a nice addition to any concert band program, delighting both players as well as the audience.

There is the option to have the melody played an octave higher if preferred (just swap the octave treble clef vs. regular treble clef). For the secondo, the right hand has repeated triad eighth notes. I always enjoy writing something simple but pretty and this piece is exactly that. As with many of my other piano compositions, I enjoy writing them in the style of “soft piano” pieces which you can listen to while you study, work, relax, or anything else. I initially came up with the original motif at the start of the piece which I really liked and expanded it into a full piece. When coming up to the B section I made it too dramatic and it would probably be too distracting for the listener if they were working or studying so I decided to start over with the B section and write something that expanded upon the original motif in a subtle and sweet way.I am quite pleased with the finished composition, it turned out in a way that I was aiming for from the beginning. As for the title, I sat down after I had finished writing the piece and listened to it a few times and brainstormed some names. I eventually settled on the name that it is now: ‘Some Things Don’t Always Last’ which has a bitter-sweet quality to it. I think it fits quite well with the piece as it’s like a lullaby that comes and goes. A distant memory that is recalled because of an old toy you found or because you drove past your childhood home that you grew up in.
