I had just begun receiving the main ideas for it when a pianist I know locally, Robert Aston, happened to ask me if I had written anything for piano and string quartet. I believe that Quincie “heard� this and that was the trigger and the door unlocking. Because the next thing I knew I was absolutely engulfed in the writing of this work for the next six months.Like all my works, this one is an emotional journey, and my own nickname for it is Quincie, The Comic Healer. Each movement tells a progressive story of the different stages of a journey through a long period of grief, illness, depression and chronic anxiety. The overall mood of the whole piece is extremely energetic, loving, warm, compassionate and audience friendly, and while there is some heart ache in the middle of the first movement, the work is also extremely comical and hilarious in its third and fourth movements. It has a great sense of slapstick humour alongside the deep ache of grief and unfathomable sadness. The lyrics of Scarborough Fair appear to have something in common with a Scottish ballad titled The Elfin Knight (Child Ballad #2, collected by Francis James Child, which has been traced as far back as 1670. In this ballad, an elf threatens to abduct a young woman to be his lover unless she can perform an impossible task (For thou must shape a sark to me / Without any cut or heme, quoth he); she responds with a list of tasks that he must first perform (I have an aiker of good ley-land / Which lyeth low by yon sea-strand). Dozens of versions existed by the end of the 18th century. A number of older versions refer to locations other than Scarborough Fair, including Wittingham Fair, Cape Ann, twixt Berwik and Lyne, etc. Many versions do not mention a place name and are often generically titled (The Lovers' Tasks, My Father Gave Me an Acre of Land. The references to the traditional English fair, Scarborough Fair and the refrain parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme date to 19th-century versions, and the refrain may have been borrowed from the ballad Riddles Wisely Expounded, which has a similar plot. In looking for texts which expressed something of the love and admiration I have for my dear lady, I found some beautiful poems by the late Australian poet, John Shaw Neilson. In 1957, Henry Onorati arranged the song for a recording by the Jack Halloran Singers, but it was not released in time for Christmas. The next year, Harry Simeone was looking for material to create a Christmas album, and Onorati introduced him to the “Carol of the Drum.” Simeone re-arranged the song, retitled it “The Little Drummer Boy,” and recorded it with the Harry Simeone Chorale on the album Sing We Now of Christmas. The song is the story of a young shepherd boy who joins the procession of the wise men and other humble admirers to the Savior’s manger. When the boy reaches the gathering, others present gifts, but all the boy can afford is his gift of making music on his drum. Over 200 versions of this song in at least seven languages have been written.In September 1977, an additional track was recorded for Bing Crosby’s Merrie Olde Christmas television special, performed by Crosby and David Bowie. According to co-writer Ian Fraser, Bowie balked at singing “Little Drummer Boy.” “I hate this song. Is there something else I could sing?” Fraser recalls Bowie telling him. Fraser, along with songwriter Larry Grossman and the special’s scriptwriter, Buz Kohan, then wrote the “Peace on Earth” lyrics as a counterpoint to “Little Drummer Boy.” Crosby performed “Little Drummer Boy,” while Bowie sang the new tune “Peace on Earth,” which they reportedly performed after less than an hour of rehearsal. Crosby never lived to see his performance on television, as he died a month after recording. The show aired in November 1977 on CBS.

But their spirits live here and man are they energetic. All day, All night, shenanigans would happen here and yet, the police could never find any evidence. At this point, the police reports have to say something about ghosts considering they never have any evidence to give an account. The Graveyard Playground tells the tale of five kids whose spirits are confined to this playground.

River Music is a fun and accessible piece that has received much positive feedback in the clarinet world and has been performed many times, including at the International Clarinet Association's ClarinetFest. It is an approximately 8 minute piece for two Bb clarinets and bass clarinet that would be equally at home on an environmental-themed concert or any other type of program. It is a relatively advanced piece but has been performed by high school students. River Music was written for Clarinets for Conservation.Program Note: River Music was inspired by my time one summer spent on the Chattahoochee River and at the Chattahoochee Nature Center near Atlanta, Georgia. I have always had a connection to bodies of water, having spent many summers and weekends at the lake by my grandparents’ house in New York. While sometimes I feel like an outsider as a New Yorker living in the South, as soon as I got on the river, canoeing down the Chattahoochee, I felt at home again. Something about the river reminds me of my childhood on Lake Peekskill, and River Music was partially inspired by that connection.Once I started writing the piece, it took on a life of its own, as water and nature (and composing) often does. One reason I’ve always felt strongly about environmentalism and protecting our natural environment is that all of it – the trees, the earth, the rivers, the lakes – has been here long before we came along and started messing it up, and it will (hopefully) be here long after we’re gone, as long as we make sure to protect these natural spaces and wilderness areas. I often think about how much trees have seen, and as I wrote this piece I started thinking about how much the river has seen too. I hear stories in River Music, and to me it’s the river telling us some, though certainly nowhere near all, of its stories.Perhaps River Music will take you, the listener, on a journey down the river-not just through space, but through time. You might hear some of the same stories I hear. Or you may not.
