Starlit Waters, the 8th track from the debut album Reflections (2010). This is where it all began 'seriously' for me. Written in 1999, this piece won first prize in a composition competition and very much became the start of the journey of the whole album for the following 10 years! This was composed at a time in my life when I was using my pianistic skills to challenge my writing and vice versa. It was also at a time in my creative journey when I liked to cram as many different ideas into a piece of music as I possible could, something which I've been criticised for for my entire professional life (tough cookies I say!). It's definitely no coincidence that my interest in creating 'surprise' with sudden changes in music coincided with having Bohemian Rhapsody on constant repeat when was a kid!

(Its complete original name is Jalousie 'Tango Tzigane' (Jealousy Gypsy Tango).The piece was written in 1925 but first recorded 10 years later by the Boston Pops Orchestra under the direction of the beloved Arthur Fiedler.Thanks to the Danish National Symphony, whose version of the song provided inspiration for many of the licks in this arrangement.This is scored with a baritone instead of trombone (for the gentler touch), but I've also attached a trombone part. Coltrane based 26-2 on Charlie Parkers 'Confirmation', but altered it slightly using his famous 'Coltrane Changes' system of over writing the melody and harmonies. Scored for 5 Saxophones, this is not for the faint-hearted!! But should engender some focused practice sessions! Incidentally, 26-2 was originally an untitled track on the 1960 album, Trane brought it into the studio at the last minute, and after 26 takes on day 2 it was labelled as such by the producer, 26-2, and the name just seemed to stick!Full recorded MP3 on this site too.
