This, finally, originates from the music-making of shepherds - coming from the Abruzzi and from Calabria to Rome at Christmas to play the shawm and the bagpipes in front of the cribs. Hence the popular consecutive thirds and the sustained bass tones characterizing the first Largo, a genuine siciliano in the rocking, typically dotted 12/8 time.

The general inspiration for the music was an idea of Durham, garnered from two or three short visits and a reading of a short history – so a sort of “Durham of the mind�, a stylized Durham; ‘my’ Durham, if you will, imagined into music. However, the defining inspiration for the piece was the Cathedral. My first visit to Durham in 2001 saw me standing open-mouthed on Palace Green, and then in silent awe as I walked into that formidable magnificence inside. Most of the themes came from the days immediately following my first experience of this extraordinary, inspiring building. The feeling that the very stones and pillars themselves are imbued with centuries of prayer, with people’s joy, grief, despair, even anger; gratitude and hope. As the tunes and chords and sounds started to organize themselves in my mind and onto manuscript paper, I realized that I was writing a sort of “day in the life of Durham�, and that the Cathedral would be its beginning, would be in its middle, and would be at its ending. German.Die Weise von Liebe und Tod des Cornets Christoph Rilke obviously is the last work outlined by Viktor Ullmann in the concentration camp ofTheresienstadt. Other than with the two symphonies developing from the piano sonatas Nos. 5 and 7, Ullmann apparently thought of an orchestral melodrama first, it was only later that the note for recitant and orchestra or piano was added. This version of the work is known to be performed several times in Theresienstadt. Only the first piece had been orchestrated by Ullmann himself, but he had written down the essentials of the orchestration in the hardly decipherable manuscript in great detail. Ullmann chose 12 sections from the prose work by Rainer Maria Rilke, shortening the plot sensibly. Except for the elimination of some sentences which refer to the rose-petal episode and which are incomprehensible without the framework plot, the borrowed texts are unabridged. Written in 2010 for the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, Wigglesworth's nine-minute work explores the idea of perpetuum mobile (continuous movement) in seven connected, miniature inventions. A regular pulse forms the work’s core, with elaborations of the central musical idea shifting constantly around it in jagged rhythms and sumptuous orchestration. The composer writes, The seven sections can very briefly be described thus: 1) an active, miniature 'theme and variations'; 2) the juxtaposition of various fragmentary two-part inventions; 3) a tremolo string ostinato with woodwind interjections, building towards the first climax; 4) an ostinato passing between horns and muted trumpets together with a dialogue for high woodwind and low strings; 5) a very slow canon for string harmonics and pizzicato double basses; 6) a fast, one-part invention beginning with solo piccolo, and gradually leading to the second climax; 7) chorale. This is a lively orchestral miniature which gives the impression of a kaleidoscope, with short musical ideas cutting across each other in quick succession.
