Brass Quintet Horn,Trombone,Trumpet,Tuba - Level 4 - Digital Download

SKU: A0.1401614

Composed by Joseph Lamb. Arranged by F. Leslie Smith. 20th Century,Classical,Historic,Ragtime. 32 pages. Sweetwater Brass Press #984793. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.1401614).

Ragtime was originally and primarily piano music.  The Library of Congress traces the origin and wellspring of ragtime to St. Louis, Missouri.  The Britannica website explains, “Ragtime evolved in the playing of honky-tonk pianists along the Mississippi and Missouri rivers in the last decades of the 19th century. It was influenced by minstrel-show songs, African American banjo styles, and syncopated (off-beat) dance rhythms of the cakewalk, and also elements of European music.”
But it wasn’t until the mid-1890s, when music publishers started printing ragtime scores, making the music available to the public at large, that ragtime’s popularity began to soar.  By 1900 ragtime was the popular music.  It stayed that way until about 1917 when the rise of jazz began to overtake it.  By 1920, ragtime was nearly forgotten.
Thirty years later, a ragtime revival began.  And one Patricia Lamb-Conn found out that her father, Joseph F. Lamb, was a well-known composer of ragtime.  In fact, the “Big Three” composers of classical ragtime are considered to be Scott Joplin, James Scott and the only non-African American, Joseph Lamb.
Lamb was born in 1887 in New Jersey, taught himself to play piano and was very much influenced by Joplin’s early ragtime publications.  From there, Lamb went on to develop into a master of classic ragtime.
One of Lamb’s most popular works was a 1916 composition he titled “Patricia Rag.” (The title apparently had nothing to do with his daughter, who was born in 1924.)  It consists of four themes in five sections, with the first theme repeated after sections 1 and 2.  Lamb pitched the opening in E-flat Major, changing to A-flat Major at the Trio.
This brass quintet arrangement, completed in 2024, consists of 150 measures, approximately five minutes, ten seconds in length.  It retains the basic structure of the original piano score but modifies the pitches to B-flat Major and E-flat Major, respectively, to accommodate the normal playing range of the brass instruments.  Possible exceptions for some players include:  (1) Trumpet 1 plays its A-above-the-staff a number of times and its B above-the-staff once; (2) Trombone plays several E above-the-staff notes; (3) Tuba plays several way-below-the-staff F notes and one high G note. Throughout the arrangement, the original melody is maintained and featured, but in some sections the background and harmony are altered to feature one or more of the five instruments.  In the Trio, the sections designated by rehearsal marks F and G are slowed and treated as a serenade; the original tempo is restored at H.  In performing this arrangement, players should pay particular attention to dynamics.  Additionally, because of the nature of ragtime, this piece may require more-than-usual practice and rehearsal.
The arranger, Les Smith, will be happy to provide substitute parts (for example, treble clef baritone for trombone) at no charge.  He would like to receive your suggestions, comments, corrections and criticisms.  Contact him at lessmith61@bellsouth.net.  For more arrangements by Les, enter Sweetwater Brass Press (without the quotation marks) in the Sheet Music Plus or Sheet Music Direct search box.

Over 200 Old-Time Songs With Melody Line, Lyrics & Guitar Chords. Composed by Richard L. Matteson, Jr. American Music. Acoustic Music. E-book. Mel Bay Publications - Digital Sheet Music #21665EB. Published by Mel Bay Publications - Digital Sheet Music (M0.21665EB).

ISBN 9781619110991. 8.75x11.75 inches.

Bill Bay asked me to write a follow up book to my last book, The Bluegrass Pickers Tune Book (20233). If you like Bluegrass music (232 songs) I'd recommend getting that book to add to your collection. The focus of this book, The Acoustic Source Book is on roots and old-time music. The book is focused on the time period from late 1800's until 1940's.
There are a few songs from The Bluegrass Book that were too important to be left out. I decided not to use any patriotic and Christmas songs and came up with a list of about 400 songs which eventually was cut down to over 200. During the late 1800's and early 1900's there was an important evolution in American music; the birth of jazz, ragtime, and blues. This was also the period of the phonograph and early commercial recordings. Music from the Minstrel period as well as traditional songs were used as staple for the roots musicians. In the early 1900's there were rags, blues, gospel, Tin-Pan Alley, jug band, spiritual, old-time country and popular songs. I've tried to include some of the well-known songs from every genre to give you a big slice of Americana.
There are some great songs that are popular roots, bluegrass and old-time songs today that have never been published. There are also great songs that are not well known that should be played and enjoyed.

Composed by Various. Arranged by Diana McNulty (ASCAP). Folk,Jazz,Multicultural,Traditional,World. Individual part. 61 pages. Diana McNulty #3008833. Published by Diana McNulty (A0.904630).

About this Collection:

The music of Québec has been historically rich in cultural diversity, with Celtic and French influences. Québécois composers of the early 1900's were no less inspired by their closest neighbor, the United States. Ragtime emerged at the turn of the 20th century in the U. S. as a popular style of African American dance music, and was an important predecessor to Jazz. During that time, large numbers of African Americans were immigrating north to Canada in search of a better life. With them, they brought music that would be embraced by Canadian composers such as Jean-Baptiste Lafrenière and his contemporaries.

For flutists who enjoy expanding their repertoire into a variety of musical styles, this collection of ragtime pieces provides an opportunity to explore a genre that is largely underrepresented this instrument. Ragtime is a quirkly, lively, and entertaining style of music which lends itself well to the character of the flute's voice.

Includes 11 pieces, with parts for flute and piano.

By Kathi Kerr. By Kathi Kerr. Arranged by Kathi Kerr. Film/TV,Instructional,Jazz. Score. 4 pages. Melody Music Publishers #646862. Published by Melody Music Publishers (A0.1042071).

This song is in the ragtime style, popular in the early 1900s. It was intended to be a serious form of music with dynamics and phrasing. It became a popular style played as fast as possible in saloons and theaters. Play this piece as ragtime was originally intended to be played with expression and at a moderate tempo until the final repeat, where it starts slow and accelerates. Change the dynamics when a section is immediately repeated to give variation. Tempo changes can also be a great form of expression (and more dynamic). Watch the fingering in the left hand and continue throughout. Practice the jumps without looking to learn how they feel. Bars 6, 8, and 9 are arpeggios on the fully diminished chord. Also, notice in bar 5 it changes to the E flat minor, which is the parallel minor, meaning it keeps the same name but has a different key signature. That is why there are G flats.

Composed by Claude Debussy. Arranged by Ray Thompson. 20th Century. 34 pages. RayThompsonMusic #3227059. Published by RayThompsonMusic (A0.553608).

Two Piano Preludes from Book 1 - Nos.VI Des pas sur la neige/XII Minstrels

Two preludes from Bk 1 arranged symphonic winds: double wind quintet  with contra bass and opt. trumpet and trombone.

No 6 Des pas sur la neige (Footsteps in the Snow)

The piece is one of four Debussy preludes in both books whose title origins are unknown. It has been suggested that the inspiration for the title could have stemmed from a painting depicting a snowy landscape. This was an extremely popular backdrop among Impressionist artist like Claude Monet or Alfred Sisley; the latter painted Snow at Louveciennes.

No 12 Minstrels

This is the final prelude of Book One.

Debussy delivers a surprising and humorous gem that is a tribute to the performing minstrel groups which started to appear in Europe around 1900.
