A canon is a polyphonic device in which several voices play the same music, entering in sequence. Pachelbel's Canon in D was originally scored for three violins arranged in canon, accompanied by a basso continuo playing an ostinato pattern, repeating the same harmonic progression throughout the entire composition.Regis Bookshar has now arranged this composition for a Woodwind Trio, consisting of 1 Flute, 1 Oboe and 1 Bb Clarinet, which play the melody in canon, and a Keyboard instrument, either a Piano or Organ, which plays the ostinato pattern.
