It is a re-working of the earlier work Signatures (B50) for solo viola, and follows the same structure of six short movements based on note rows built around specific intervals, together with a unifying feature of a modal Scottish style folk melody. The relevant intervals are:- 1. major 3rd, major 2nd 2. minor 3rd, minor 2nd 3. perfect 4th, minor 3rd 4. tritone, major 3rd 5. perfect 5th, minor 2nd 6. major 3rd, major 2nd and major 6th The sections may be regarded as a parallel to a divertimento:- 1. Andante con moto - an expositionary section 2. Allegro scherzando - a self-explanatory scherzo 3. Poco adagio - an atmospheric section 4. Allegro - a more textural section leading to 5. Allegro - another short scherzo 6. Andante pensiero - allegro - andante - where the folk style dominates the central section which is flanked by a re-working of the theme of section 1 and then dies away as if into the mists. Arrangement for woodwind quintet by Daniel Kaplan of Vivaldi's wonderful Concerto Grosso Op. 3 No. 11, RV 565 (from his L'Estro Armonico of 1711). Note especially the fantastic fugue that constitutes the third movement, and the delectable sicilienne of the fourth movement. This is the concerto that Bach arranged as his Organ Concerto No 3 (BWV 596), but Vivaldi's original version is fleeter and has greater rhythmic drive (although, in various places, Bach's example was followed in regard to realization of the figured bass and ornamentation). This is part of Kaplan's project to arrange great classics for woodwind quintet, of which several arrangements have now been completed. The woodwind quintet has the intimacy of chamber music, yet is ideal to bring out the individual lines of contrapuntal pieces such as fugues. (Note that Kaplan's woodwind-quintet arrangement of the six Mozart–Bach Preludes and Fugues, K. 404a, is also avaiable on this website.).

Handel’s great set of 12 Concerti grossi (= Grand Concertos, in the first edition) op. 6 are somehow a bit related in spirit, through their power and diversity, with Beethoven’s string quartets. Therefore, here they are arranged for the more ‘abstract’ and ‘timeless’ medium of the string quartet, allowing also for an addition to the repertoire of the respective ensembles. Articulation, tempo and dynamics indications were specified or added where needed, and all the trills were indicated to start with the upper auxiliary note, not only according to the Baroque performance practice but also fitting to the melodic contour. The movements of Concerto grosso in E minor, op. 6 no. 3: 1. Larghetto – a serious sarabande 2. Andante – a tragic fugato, reminding of J.S. Bach’s style (and of the theme of D. Scarlatti’s so-called ‘Cat Fugue’) 3. Allegro – stern, Italianate and a bit strange 4. Polonaise (Andante) – pastoral, yet courtly, in G major 5.
