Composed by Phil Beaman. Folk,Jazz,Spiritual. Octavo. 13 pages. Phil Beaman #4719605. Published by Phil Beaman (A0.844645).

This piece is a Showstopper! Rock-a-My-Soul is a Choral piece based on the traditional folk/gospel/spiritual. I originally envisioned this piece for a Middle School Choir, but it works well with any group that wants to have fun. It is written in 3 part Treble clef which the conductor may assign as they see fit for their choir and performance. (Part 3 works very well with male voices.) Parts all stay within an octave from Middle C to C above.
This lively version uses many styles of jazz to drive this piece, yet there is also a recurring descending third ostinato which is the rocking comfort this piece imparts.   The piano part plays an important role in driving this piece and setting the moods. Each of the seven sections shifts the mood and jazz style but maintains a level of energy.
After completing the jazz arrangements of the traditional chorus I tried various ways to extend the piece. One day while working on this piece I saw a news clip about another school bullying incident. I immediately made the connection -- at its heart Rock-a-My-Soul is really about overcoming obstacles to find comfort and acceptance. So I wrote some additional lyrics to create an anti-bullying, anti-depression section. I have soloists deliver the main lines to make it personal and invitational then the choir backs them up, call and response style, with Everything's gonna be alright.
Lyrics throughout are all carefully worded so that the song may be used for either secular or sacred purposes. The context and location where it is sung will flesh out the implied and intended meaning. If sung in school it means you have friends here who accept you; if sung in your place of worship then it means that your God accepts you.
Simple power, beauty and meaning all wrapped in joyous jazz!

SKU: A0.818178

Composed by R. L. Pearsall. Arranged by Philip Le Bas. Christmas,Sacred. Octavo. 8 pages. Philip Le Bas #5001259. Published by Philip Le Bas (A0.818178).

An arrangement by Philip Le Bas of the wonderful old German Christmas carol In Dulci Jubilo made popular in an English version by R.L. Pearsall (1795-1856), mixing English and Latin words, for 8-part choir and organ. Here the parts are reduced to three (soprano, alto, baritone) so that it can be sung by choirs for whom eight parts is too ambitious! Perhaps surprisingly, the carol retains much of its interesting counterpoint and tuneful lyricism; the arranger hopes that both singers and listeners will enjoy it equally.

 1. In dulci jubilo
Let us our homage shew:
Our heart's joy reclineth
In praesepio;
And like a bright star shineth
Matris in gremio,
Alpha es et O!

 2. O Jesu parvule,
I yearn for thee alway!
Hear me, I beseech Thee,
O puer optime;
My prayer let it reach Thee,
O princeps gloriae.
Trahe me post te.

 3. O patris caritas!
O Nati lenitas!
Deeply were we stained.
Per nostra crimina:
But Thou for us hast gained
Coelorum gaudia,
O that we were there!

4. Ubi sunt gaudia,
Where, if that they be not there?
There are angels singing
Nova cantica;
There the bells are ringing
In Regis curia.
O that we were there!

SKU: A0.1294135

Composed by Colin Kirkpatrick. Christian,Christmas,Contest,Festival. 13 pages. Colin Kirkpatrick Publications #884558. Published by Colin Kirkpatrick Publications (A0.1294135).

This is a really lively setting of a colorful text by Danny Alorean. The main theme is in 7/8 time, divided into 2, 2, and 3. It might look a bit daunting to some, but it's easy when counted as 1-2-1-2-1-2-3. Its recommended that singers practise this rhythm first, perhaps by clapping on the off-beats. There’s plenty of contrast in the piece and singers are sure to enjoy the music. It’s scored for SAT choir with keyboard accompaniment. It is thus a useful piece for high school or college choirs that have no bass section. The middle section uses much vocal counterpoint and has almost a waltz feeling to it. Choir members need to be reasonably experienced at singing independent vocal parts. The piano part is of moderate difficulty but could be handled by any competent pianist. This is a new arrangement (as of Seotember 2023) in which the music has been transposed down one tone from the original. This joyful anthem would be a great addition to your Christmas concert or service. The vocal range is as follows: Soprano: C4 - F5; Alto: A3 - D5; Tenor C3 - E4.  (Duration 03:03).

Composed by Traditional. Arranged by Philip Le Bas. Christian,Christmas,Easter,Sacred. 57 pages. Philip Le Bas #728523. Published by Philip Le Bas (A0.1127914).

A new setting by Philip Le Bas of the ancient carol The Seven Joys of Mary (or Joys Seven, or a variety of other possible titles.) This version includes the optional flute and B flat clarinet parts. Since medieval times the number of Joys of Mary has varied between five, seven, ten and twelve, but the the current number of seven has become popular, especially since the basic harmonization of R.R. Terry published in 1833 and the contemporary version for 8-part choir by Stephen Cleobury in the OUP's Carols for Choirs series. (A history of the carol can be found in the New Oxford Book of Carols, edited by H Keyte and A Parrott, p.462f.) The version presented here is kept relatively simple to perform, being scored only for three-part choir (SABar - soprano, alto, baritone) and piano, but with plenty of interest including changes in voicing, changes of rhythm (especially verse 6) and two key changes. The arranger hopes performers and listeners will find it energetic and fun! It should certainly be sung in that spirit! Although often associated with Christmas, it could in fact be performed in any season, including Easter, referring as it does to the whole life, death and resurrection of Christ.

Composed by Traditional. Arranged by Philip Le Bas. Christian,Christmas,Sacred. Octavo. 8 pages. Philip Le Bas #6629877. Published by Philip Le Bas (A0.818192).

An arrangement of the traditional Christmas Carol The Lord at first did Adam make for three-part (SABar) choir and organ by Philip Le Bas. This ancient carol tells the story of the fall of Adam, causing humanity to be wrapt in sin. Yet out of God's goodness we are redeemed by the birth of Christ. The listeners are exhorted to begin an holy life to live, and to rejoice and merry be, for this is Christmas Eve.
The version presented here is intended for parish choirs lacking in tenor and bass singers, but with a good organ! It starts in a slightly dark, primeval way with open fifths in the organ part, developing into a minor key throughout the verses, but with a decidedly more positive feel in G major in each of the refrains. The accompaniment expresses the drama expressed in the lyrics without the choral parts becoming too involved, and the whole piece (4 1/2 minutes) ends on a celebratory Tierce de Picardy: for this is Christmas Eve!.
