Die Titel über den drei Teilen des Stücks haben keinen beschreibenden Charakter, sondern sind nur als Hinweise auf ihre musikalische Atmosphäre zu betrachten. Der 1. Teil beginnt mit einer Einleitung in ruhigem Zeitmaß, welcher eine lebhafte Passacaglia folgt, deren zweistimmige Bassfigur, zunächst vom Klavier vorgetragen, von Variation zu Variation durch verschiedene Instrumentengruppen in höhere Lagen gezogen wird, bei gleichzeitigem und regelmäßigem Sich-Steigern des Tempos, bis sie zum Schluss durch die hohen Violinen hindurch in das Anfangszeitmaß einmündet. Der 2. Teil beginnt in der Schluss-Stimmung des ersten und wechselt dann in eine vorwiegend von Blechbläsern getragene Periode von erregten Signalen und Rufen, welchen ein ruhiges, auf gleichmäßiger Achtelbewegung liegendes Andantino folgt, in dem Holzbläser, Harfe und Vibraphon konzertieren. Dieses Andantino wird in zwei Hälften geteilt durch einen Hymnus der Streicher und Bläser. Die zweite Hälfte des Andantino gleitet in einen stillen und aphoristischen Epilog über. Der 3. Teil ist eine lebhaft bewegte Folge kleiner Gruppen und Kurzmotive, deren formale Herkunft sich jeweils aus den rhythmischen und spannungsmäßigen Gegebenheiten des Vorhergegangenen erklärt. Kurz vor der Stretta liegt noch eine ruhige Strecke: Ein von Glockeninstrumenten umspielter Kanon der Violoncelli und Violinen. - Hans Werner Henze.

Although Bertold Hummel composed this Scherzo for bassoon and chamber orchestra more than fifty years ago, the piece still captivates every listener with its youthful, carefree liveliness. Virtuoso and witty, it does justice to its title in every respect. It was created in 1957 upon commission of the Kleines Unterhaltungsorchester Südwestfunk Baden-Baden. The solo part of the four-minute concert piece with the tempo indication 'allegro molto' was tailor-made by Hummel for the orchestra's principal bassoonist Helmut Böker. It was republished in the Olney Hymns, 1779, Bk. i., No. 79, with the heading Praise for the Fountain opened. It is based on Zech. xiii. 1, In that day there shall be a Fountain opened to the house of David and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem for sin and for uncleanness. This hymn in full or abbreviated is in extensive use in all English-speaking countries.A well known form of this hymn is From Calvary's Cross a Fountain flows. This appeared in Cotterill's Selection, 8th ed., 1819, No. 43, in 5 stanzas of 4 lines, and consists of stanzas i.-v. very much altered. In Bickersteth's Christian Psalmody, 1833, No. 49, that same opening stanza is given, with a return, in most of the remaining six stanzas, to the original text. The question as to by whom these alterations were made, first in Cotterill's Selection off 1819, and then in Bickersteth's Christian Psalmody, 1833, is answered by R. W. Dibdin, in the Christian Annotator, vol. iii., No. 76, for July 5, 1856, p. 278
