Ethel Waters first sang it at The Cotton Club night club in Harlem in 1933 and recorded it that year. The original handwritten lyrics, along with a painting by Ted Koehler, were featured on the US version of Antiques Roadshow on January 24, 2011, where they were appraised for between $50,000 and $100,000. The lyrics show a number of crossings out and corrections.

This work was originally a short piece from 1995 (marking 50 years after Bartok's death). It was later extended and elaborated upon to make this virtuosic two-minute study. The piece is highly accessible and is appropriate for most standards of percussionist, including students and more advanced players. A companion piece, 'Study for Snare No. 2' by Robert A. Several unusual techniques are used throughout the work such as different types of throat singing, overtone singing, multiphonics, vocal percussion, extreme registers etc. It reveals some sounds and colors yet unknown to the world of vocal music. The work is based on a short excerpt of the psalm 50 (Domine labia mea aperies). There is a text accumulation process throughout the work, at the beginning there are just sounds, then phonemes assemble, words appear and closer to the end the full text is revealed.

He was born in Baltimore, Maryland in 1940 to Italian-American parents, Francis and Rose Marie Zappa. Zappa's parents had a major influence on his career and his music, as they were both supportive of his creative endeavors. His father, Francis, was a chemical engineer and his mother, Rose Marie, was a former waitress and housewife. Both parents encouraged their son to pursue his passion for music and supported him financially throughout his life. Zappa was especially close to his mother, who often helped him out financially when he needed it. She also provided emotional support and was always there to listen to his ideas and ambitions. The two were known to have a strong bond, and their influence can be heard in many of Zappa's songs.
