English.Juliana Hall’s song setting of the famous Wallace Stevens poem Thirteen Ways of Looking at a Blackbird was commissioned by saxophonist Carrie Koffman (faculty, Hartt and Yale Schools of Music). Koffman had the idea to commission a setting of this poem in 13 parts, and to present each part in a very short performance at one of the 13 stops along the Wallace Stevens Walk in Hartford, Connecticut (the path Stevens traversed daily as he walked to and from his job at The Hartford Insurance Company). Being a song composer, Hall asked if she could write the piece with voice, which Koffman enthusiastically embraced. The work, then, is for either a soprano or a mezzo soprano voice, with alto saxophone, and is a single work in 13 parts. The premiere took place on Saturdy, October 16, 2021 along the Wallace Stevens Walk, performed on this outdoor excursion by soprano Cherie Caluda (Hartt voice faculty) and Koffman on saxophone. The indoor premiere took place soon after, on Sunday, October 24, 2021, as part of a concert at the Hartt School of Music devoted to the works of Juliana Hall.

The story behind ‘Roadtrip on a Motorway’ is from a personal experience of travelling to Galway from Dundalk to go to Pink Training, a national and life-changing weekend. The original phrase represents the rising hope of what the weekend could become and how exciting it is to be outside of college. This is quickly interrupted as during the journey the car breaks down on the motorway one hour away from Galway city. This is represented by fast, irregular rhythms with counterpoint to represent the disorientation, panic and fear from not knowing where we are or how we are going to get to Galway on time. The return of the original motif symbolises hope coming back to us as a woman stopped on the motorway and offered to drive us to Galway. A sense of panic and disorientation returns in the music as we begin to become stressed about whether we will meet the deadline for registration. The song finally resolves to the original theme, but developed as a nod to the journey that we had while we finally make it to registration on time.

Cape Cod Girls, originating from North America, is traditionally thought of as a short-drag shanty used in activities such as raising sails. Its lyrics vary from version to version between “heave�, “haul�, and “bound� away, depending on the physical activity required. Jolly Sailor Bold first appears in a collection of sailing songs out of London, but has many similarities to the Irish ballad The Banks of Claudy. While not used as a working song, its minor tonality and association to sailing folklore makes for an interesting middle point along the journey. This setting contains a newly written verse warning of the dangers of sirens, mythical creatures known to sing to lure sailors to their doom. Lastly, Leave Her, Johnny is a pump shanty, usually one of the last activities done as a ship docks. In these types of pieces, sailors sing to complain about the rough conditions aboard, knowing they are soon to leave and will face no punishment. While sea shanties have been popular repertoire for tenor/bass ensembles, there has been a distinct lack of arranging for treble choirs. Historical research is discovering more and more evidence that while piracy and sailing was male-dominated, female captains like Anne Bonny, Mary Read, Zheng Yi Sao and others made their mark on the high seas. This piece is dedicated to the women that his-tory has forgotten.
