Published by Helen Marple-Horvat (A0.749203). ‘Kissing You’ was written for the 1996 film Romeo and Juliet by Des’ree Weekes and Tim Atack, with the gorgeous string arrangements by Craig Armstrong. It is a much loved song, very well received by the critics and public alike, and hugely popular at weddings. As well as this arrangement for singer and string quartet/string orchestra, I also have an arrangement for string quartet without the singer, where the first violinist has the vocal line. The Quartet version can be found on my 'Skinny Black Dogs' Youtube Channel by typing in 'Romeo and Juliet, Kissing You.'  The string parts in this version are almost identical to the quartet version but require fewer moments of double stopping as the singer carries the tune. The parts are not difficult to play, and the key is easy for strings. My bowing is just a guide, and less experienced players can easily change the bow more often. There is a tricky part for cello at Bar 28, but with a little help from a good teacher, I’m sure that it is not impossible. The cellist in my recording plays it very lightly, and it could also be done in thumb position, played an octave lower, or simplified. It is important to stick to a strict tempo so that the singer can pull against the barline. Take a look at my Quartet version on Youtube, but bear in mind that this one is a lot easier for the first violin.

Hope you find it enjoyable to listen and play. :)The piece depicts someone, who has gone through so much in life - be it happiness, sorrow, triumph or grief, stopping for a moment and looking back. Turning around and taking a good long look of the past and letting all sorts of memories gush into his mind, bringing back all those long forgotten nostalgia. The intro of the piece, is when he sits down, his mind slowly steps out from the present reality and starts to wander off in search of the past. Throughout the piece, he encounters fond memories which will always be a joy to think of, and also bad memories, which he is powerless to amend, and so lets them pass on like a flowing river. At the end, he steps back slowly into the present, after an amazing short trip through the life he has lived. The piece is generally played with pedal throughout with rubato at a relaxed tone. Venus Fly Trap (and an Unfortunate Insect) - The title says it all! With Violin I representing the doomed insect, the rest of the instruments take on the role of Venus Fly Trap, creating a calm, peaceful atmosphere which lures the bug into the plants life-ending jaws. The final seconds of this movement are a climactic escalation of harmony and rhythm which depict the last fleeting moments of the insect's life as the Venus Fly Trap consumes it.4.) Spiders - Not just one spider: lots of them! The music of this movement (composed in a somewhat-classical style) is sure to leave the audience with the sensation of thousands of little spiders crawling all over! This is a great movement, using lots of chromatic themes and spider-sounding trills.

Most decisions are based on their current skills and abilities, or where I would like for them to be when they complete the piece.This arrangement was made for a late intermediate student currently working on Federation class Moderately Difficult 1. It has a lot of tricky moments, but one of the most important challenges is the pedaling, which should be kept minimal. The tempo can be flexible, but a good rule of thumb is that the faster it is played, the less pedal should be used. Voicing should also be stressed when the texture is thicker. My student had a blast playing this piece.Pedaling and fingering suggestions are included.

This version of this old catch, or round, could also be played on the harp or guitar. Because one instrument is playing both parts it is a good learning experience and the sound is glorious. At the moment the sound sample is only a Sibelius audio file, but I'll replace it with a real recording ASAP.

The second movement takes off immediately, and departs on a musical journey of its' own. The rhythmic drive being heavily inspired by bebop jazz, and similar styles of the mid-twentiethcentury. Listen, as moments of solace break out in reverence of the great ballads written for the instrument by many jazz composers of this era. This movement ends as abrubtly as it began as we enter the slow, lyrical third movement. This next movement is incredibly slow, and brings out the lyrical, singing quality of the instrument given the right timbre. The piece concludes with a fiery finale that develops ideas introduced earlier in the piece.This is a great piece to showcase the flexibility of an ensemble, and makes for a good finisher.

The bridge works well and creates a good build and contrast. We usually have soloists for v2 and bridge, but it is optional. Always a moving experience singing this together. It would be  a great one to sing in solidarity with Ukraine at the moment.Tried, tested and very much enjoyed by all :).
