Published by Personal Sun Music (A0.1025958). TWO EPISODES FROM DARK FOREST was originally conceived as a violin concerto. As I was writing the concerto, I was suddenly struck with the idea that I could distribute the virtuosic passages across four instruments instead of giving them all to just the violin, which would make for a great string quartet. There would be challenging passages, intensity and action in all of the parts, serious interactivity, and an enhanced narrative flow.  The two episodes portrayed here were originally the third and fourth movements of the concerto.   What resulted is something of a group showcase, a feature for the whole quartet, with a lot of fiery passages being passed around in quick succession.  CHASE THROUGH THE FOREST is a headlong dash, quick and fun, with a sneaky fast rock feel, plenty of thrills, and a little bit of silent movie melodrama thrown in.  In the middle of the movement an aggressive virtuosic duel breaks out, utilizing a lot of double-stops, pitting the two violins against one another, with some nasty interjections from the viola and cello.  Following the abrupt and unexpected end of the chase scene, THE JOURNEY HOME arrives as wistful, lyrical and nostalgic, pure sentiment.  It's  an orchestrated song, with expressive, expansive and eventually intimate melodies.

Handbells play the melody while the Boomwhackers® keep a steady beat with three-note chords. For each song, there is a combined score with both parts on a grand staff plus a separate 1-staff score for each individual part. A note and chord reference chart is also provided for each song.The songs in this digital book are ordered by difficulty with the easiest songs presented first. The songs progressively incorporate more challenging rhythms, some requiring rapid chord changes. Many of the songs include two verses. The first verse is “easy� with fewer notes. The second verse is “intermediate� and expands the melody by adding more notes (sometimes including harmony notes). If you want to learn (practice) only the “easy� verse, an optional ending is provided or it can be skipped to perform the two verses together. This set of scores uses black and white noteheads and is best suited for musicians already familiar with reading standard music notation. So, I named this organ piece Mysterium Tenebris meaning, Dark Mystery in Latin. You might remember it from Scent Of A Woman or True Lies. It has appeared on a vast number of movie soundtracks. Solo piano late-beginner arrangement of Disney's Moana's hit, How Far I'll Go. The sample you hear is a snippet from the chorus section of the arrangement. This beginner arrangement transposed to C major has large noteheads with note names written in them. The left hand is very simplified, usually just playing 1-note whole notes at a time. The right hand rhythm is simplified, but still stays quite true to the original. This is a great way of playing a very impressive piece at an early stage in one's piano-learning journey for a student with good intuition. I hope you enjoy playing this arrangement!

Technically, this musical work is based on a harmonic field of semitone + minor third + whole tone, which actually includes all intervals from semitone to tritone. I call this harmonic field 'modo Verdi' in my notes, because he uses it (as scala enigmatica) in his Quattro Pezzi Sacri. Although it is conceived for toy piano, I do not object to this work being played on other keyboard instruments, nor to its being adapted for various instrumental duets.
