Liebe is a Canon, with the first part following the second throughout, one bar behind, like lovers in intimate conversation.Liebe is written for players at an intermediate standard and upwards. The melody should always carry momentum and adding plenty of expression will help convey the style. Liebe has a performance time of around three minutes. The piece opens with angels approaching from a distance singing pastores (shepherds) followed by joyful choral couplets. Several dualities weave together representing the oneness of the human and divine: harp and piano; Venezuelan joropo rhythm derived from Spanish dance; sixteenth century text and twenty-first century music; and major and Phrygian modes.
