Published by Michael Butkus-Bomier (A0.862662). the Prelude in G minor, the Military  did indeed inspire the Russian troops against the Nazi invasion. there is classic film footage of a young Emil Gilels playing the piece on a flatbed truck on an active airfield, with planes buzzing 'round. WOW! Well, our aim is not to shoot'em down, but to make music, so here is our revision of this classic two-handed unison work. In the original, the right and left are both jumping constantly, making the same music, but having to leave and leap on each 1/8-note. Our setting keeps all the melody, and all the chords intact, whilst re-distributing the same pitches to one or the other hand, not both. Some inversions have been changed to triads, or to the same inversion in both hands. Also,  the LH arpeggiated accompaniment in the middle section has precisely 1/2 the notes of the original, while preserving the harmony being expressed. So, hear it on the MP3 and see how good an impression this resetting makes. The inner 2nd melody of the middle section is still outlined with parentheses, so as not to be missed. MBB.

The music is written and arranged for a modern jazz quartet. I perform on alto saxophone with the multi-talented William Crain on piano, the master bassist Gerald Spaits, and the brilliant young drummer Morgan Rogers. The mockup audio demos posted are among the first set of compositions written for our group. I actually wrote and arranged all of this music with each of these quartet musicians’ artistry in mind and to record an album. St. Helens Suite for trombone and organ takes its inspiration from the hymn tune DUKE STREET (paired with the text “Jesus Shall Reign�) by John Hatton, who lived on Duke Street in St. Helens, UK. The suite was meant to have dual purpose as a concert piece and as music for worship services. Each of the first three movements contains fragments of the hymn tune. The first movement, Exordium, is built upon three main ideas that alternate, one of which is the second phrase of DUKE STREET. Aria dolorosa takes its opening melody from the musical motive which appears in bar 32 of the fourth movement, which was composed first. The first phrase of the hymn tune is folded into the Aria, but may not be recognizable because of its Dorian mode and slightly altered rhythm. The Capriccio ritmico is brief and quirky, showcasing some unusual tone colors on the organ, staccato technique on the trombone, and incorporates the third and fourth phrases of the hymn tune. Finally, the Toccata energica merges trombone melodies with toccata-style figurations in the organ, and the full hymn tune, though rhythmically altered, is finally heard in the second half of the toccata.
