Tenor voice solo, SATB choir unaccompanied - Moderately Difficult - Digital Download SKU: MQ.8322-E Composed by David Conte. Advanced/Collegiate. Secular, 21st Century, Americana, Children, Creation/Nature, Hope/Assurance. Instrument part. 15 pages. Duration 5 minutes, 42 seconds. E. C. Schirmer Music Company - Digital #8322-E. Published by E. C. Schirmer Music Company - Digital (MQ.8322-E). UPC: 600313483226. English. The three a cappella choral pieces that comprise “A Whitman Triptych†were composed between 2012 and 2014. O Setting Sun was commissioned by the Madison Chamber Choir, Madison, Wisconsin, Anthony Cao, conductor, and was premiered on April 20th, 2012. “What is the Grass†was composed for Cappella SF, Ragnar Bohlin, conductor, and is being premiered on tonight’s concert. Facing West was commissioned in celebration of the 75th anniversary of the Golden Gate Bridge by the International Orange Chorale, Zane Fiala, conductor, and was premiered on May 27th, 2012. I first set Whitman to music in 1986,when I adapted part of “When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloomed†as the basis for my composition “Invocation and Dance.†I went on to set “Good-Bye, My Fancy†for Male Chorus and Soprano Saxophone in 1992, and “Song of the Open Road†for Mixed Chorus and Piano in 2004. Like so many composers, I have found the visionary quality of Whitman’s verse inspiring; the vigor and intensity of the poetry seem naturally to draw out music. “What is the Grass?†is also an adaptation of a much longer poem, one of Whitman’s deepest, and most mysterious. The poem begins as a child-like meditation on grass; as hope, as an embodiment of new life and new growth in the plant world. Then suddenly there is a somber turn with the line “And now it seems to me the beautiful uncut hair of graves.†Here Whitman enters an extended mediation on how grass connects life and death, informed by his experiences in the Civil War. Hope returns with the line: “They are alive and well somewhere,†leading to the mysterious final line: “And to die is different from what anyone supposed, and luckier…†Here Whitman affirms that death can be an initiation into a broader participation of existence. In the words of poet Ivan M. Granger, Whitman offers a “Zen-like riddle that doesn’t offer an answer so much as a pathway of questioning.†My musical setting follows Whitman’s exploration, first taking a child’s point of view, expressed with lilting melodies set in a lively compound meter. The entry of the tenor soloist indicates a change of mood to the serious. The first mood returns, leading to a climax on the words “And led forward life…â€, set in 9-part harmony. The mood turns reverent, as the tenor soloist intones: “All goes onward and outward; nothing collapses.†The piece ends with a tone of gentle, slightly ironic questioning. -David ConteDuration: 5:42

Choral Choir (TTBB) - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.522311 Composed by Traditional. Arranged by Paul A. Jorg. A Cappella,Spiritual,Traditional. Octavo. 3 pages. Paul A. Jorg #5777319. Published by Paul A. Jorg (A0.522311). THE SONG DEPICTS THE STORY OF KING NEBUCHADNEZZAR'S DREAM AS INTERPRETED BY THE PROPHET DANIEL IN CHAPTER TWO OF HIS BOOK. THIS SPIRITUAL WAS SUNG BY THE ARRANGER IN THE LATE '50'S IN A COLLEGE MEN'S CHORUS, ALTHOUGH NO MUSIC WAS EVER SEEN; IT WAS SIMPLY PASSED DOWN YEAR TO YEAR IN THE CHORUS. AN EARLY RECORDING BY THE SILVER LEAF QUARTETTE, A BLACK GROUP IN THE LATE '20'S OR EARLY 30'S, HAD SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT WORDS, WITH THEIR HARMONY BEING DEEPLY SPIRITUAL, QUITE DIFFERENT FROM THIS ARRANGEMENT. LIKE MANY EARLY NEGRO SPIRITUALS AND SEA SHANTIES, THERE IS NO RECORD OF COMPOSERS. RALPH STANLEY AND HIS GROUP HAVE A BLUEGRASS VERSION WITH A DIFFERENT HARMONY, AND THE GROUP PHISH ALSO HAS A RECORDING OF THE SONG. THERE ARE A DOZEN OR MORE DIFFERENT VERSES OF LYRICS THAT HAVE BEEN USED BY VARIOUS GROUPS DOWN THROUGH THE DECADES. HERE'S HALF A DOZEN - FOR A CAPPELLA  TTBB.

Choral Choir (SATB) - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.928970 Composed by 1848 to 1903, 1859 - 1929, Lyrics by Katherine Lee Bates, and Samuel Ward. Arranged by Donald A. Mills, 2018. A Cappella,Folk,Patriotic,Spiritual. Octavo. 3 pages. Donald A Mills #4110599. Published by Donald A Mills (A0.928970). This new arrangement of America the Beautiful is SATB plus children's choir or soprano solo, a cappella. You and your audiences will delight in the new harmonies. This is a prayer rather than a gut-busting patriotic song. This arrangement is appropriate for an intermediate or higher SATB chorus plus an average children's choir or soprano solo for the last verse. A second director for the chiildren's choir may be utilized. Great for that patriotic holiday, for church, or for a concert venue. In the absence of a children's choir, the use of a strong adult soprano may be substituted in that part.

À memoria da actriz Cruz ComesanhaLábios de sabor a mar (Derradeira epístola) / Sea flavour lips (Last epistle) for Soprano/Tenor and Piano [ca. 7' 34]The origin of this work is the emotional emptiness I felt when I received the news of the death of a close friend in an unfortunate accident at home. The text was constructed with ideas and phrases taken from the poetic correspondence we had exchanged in the previous months. A few years later, I plucked up the courage to write the music, firstly for Choir a Cappella or with Piano ad libitum, followed by a version for Brass Quintet and another for Soprano or Tenor and Piano. This new edition for Voice has been revised in its entirety. The English translation of the text at the end of the score is not intended to be sung. It is only inserted to help singers who do not understand Portuguese to comprehend the message. The complexes that organise the harmonic and melodic structure are [6, 2, 5, 1, 3], [10, 9, 2, 8] and [4, 8, 9, 7].--oOo--A origem desta obra está no vazio emocional que me produziu a notícia da morte de uma íntima amiga, num infortunado acidente caseiro. Like so many composers, I have found the visionary quality of Whitman’s verse inspiring; the vigor and intensity of the poetry seem naturally to draw out music. Facing West is drawn from the Children of Adam book from Walt Whitman's Leaves of Grass. The full title of the poem is Facing West From California's Shores. Though Whitman never visited California, his biographer Justin Kaplan made the insightful observation that he imagined California's shores to be the starting point for a journey through time and culture. Here was Walt, 'a child, very old,' facing home again, looking over to it, joyous, as after long travel, growth, and sleep, asking: 'But where is what I started for, so long ago?/And why is it yet unfound?' The invitation from the International Orange Chorale to compose a piece in honor of the 75th anniversary of the Golden Gate Bridge led me easily and naturally to this great poem. The tone of Facing West is rich and complex, and draws on one of Whitman's favorite themes of using travel to distant lands as a metaphor for spiritual development. In his poem, Whitman strikes notes of reflection, of longing for adventure, and ultimately ends with a question. The continuing relevance of this question is for me beautifully addressed by the contemporary American writer Edmund White in his 1980 book States of Desire. To paraphrase somewhat, White writes: California is where dreams may come true, and the problem it presents is whether, after all, we wanted these particular dreams to be fulfilled - or would we have preferred others? Did we know what price these dreams would exact? Did we anticipate the ways in which they would unsuit us for the business of daily life? Or should our notion of daily life itself be transformed? For Americans, California's coast is as far as one can go in establishing new roots and new ways of living. As a transplanted Midwesterner who has made California his home for nearly three decades, I experience the Golden Gate Bridge as a beautiful monument to the aspirations and dreams of a restless and inventive people, qualities that Whitman's poem captures perfectly. -David ConteDuration: 5:42

Jazz Ensemble Jazz Ensemble - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1025915 By Tony Bennett & Amy Winehouse. By John Green. Arranged by Evan Osborne. A Cappella. Score and parts. 13 pages. Evan Osborne #5362579. Published by Evan Osborne (A0.1025915). This lovely arrangement of Body and Soul includes a diverse range of sections. Starting with a duet with the tenor trombone and tenor horn, the arrangement evolves into a smoky jazz ballad, with the horns paying homage to the big band style. Chord changes for an improvised solo over the form are on each part and the solo then continues into a latin-bossa section. The horns then accompany the trumpet in a brief horn-a-cappella section before the trumpet returns back to the tune and finishes off the form. Some magical and exciting moments, perfect for a recital, or a performance at a jazz club.

Published by Colin Kirkpatrick Publications (A0.522046). And a star is shining in the East A lovely melody in 3/4 time, quietly reflective with a short a cappella section in the middle. Colin Kirkpatrick’s setting of the text by Danny Alorean is sure to please, and quite easy to sing. The text looks at Bethlehem through the eyes of the shepherds. This piece would be ideal for a nativity play or part of a Christmas service or concert. The SSA voicing makes this choral piece ideal for a girl-choir or boy-choir or indeed any community choir which has no tenor or bass singers. The vocal ranges are: Soprano 1: C4 - F5; Soprano 2: B flat 5 - D5 and Alto: A flat 3 - C5. Choral Choir (SATB) - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1093336 Composed by Scottish air attributed to Anne Campbelle MacLeod. Arranged by Scott S. Stewart. A Cappella,Celtic,Film/TV,Folk,Irish. Octavo. 7 pages. Scott S. Stewart #697408. Published by Scott S. Stewart (A0.1093336). “Sing me a Song of a Lad who is Goneâ€, text by Robert Louis Stevenson, to a tune attributed to Anne Campbelle MacLeod who heard boatmen break into “a Gaelic iorram (or rowing song)†while on a trip to the Isle of Skye. MacLeod’s tune evolved into today’s “The Skye Boat Songâ€, and has since morphed into the Theme Song for the popular television series – Outlander. MacLeod’s melody originally had lyrics by Sir Harold Edwin Boulton (1859-1935) published in 1884. Stevenson disliked the sentimentality of Boulton’s words so much he composed his own in 1892. This arrangement is scored for a 4-part SATB ensemble to be performed a cappella. Performance time: 3:05+.
