In the liner notes from the original album, jazz critic Nat Hentoff quotes the description of the recording of the album that Williams gave. Our first session was for 9:00 p.m., and I was all set to record. At 9:30 some musicians were still arriving. After about an hour, we had finished one song. The sound was wonderful, and I was very happy. At this point, I was informed that the orchestra has to have a 15 minute break. The musicians vanished to a local café for some wine. About 45 minutes later, they began arriving back in the studio. We got one more song recorded before the contractor stood up and, in perfect English, said, 'Overtime'.

Hells Bells is the second single from Back in Black, released on 31 October 1980. The song begins with a bell slowly tolling four times, after which Angus Young starts playing the song’s main riff. Malcolm Young then joins in, followed by Phil Rudd on drums and Cliff Williams on bass. The bell tolls a total of 13 times during the song’s introduction. On a more personal note, I was asked to arrange this song by my daughter and son-in-law to use as the processional for their wedding.  Really… I couldn’t make this up.  It is scored for Flute Quartet:  2 flutes, alto flute (c-part included), and bass flute. It echoes the sentiments of the  Cold War late 1960s in its bold, brass gestures of confidence and elan. Set in traditional three movement form, the opening Allegro heralds the return to decorum following the upheaval of the decade. The secondary theme is reminiscent of the English lyricism of Vaughn Williams. This sentiment returned to the pen of this composer in recent years in compositions commissioned by London clarinetist Alison Eales. This score originally from 1969 was edited during the Pandemic of 2020-2021. Andante is a lamenting chorale played by the Tuba  laced by haunting melismas suggesting the drawn out moods in the music of Shostakovich. The final Rondo is spirited with a theme in 9/8 (3/4 + 3/8) with subsequent sections of mix meter and pulsating textures. Instrumentation is 2 Trumpets in C, 2 Horns in F, 2 Trombones and Tuba.
