Brass Ensemble,Brass Quintet - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.774867 Composed by Al Piantadosi. Arranged by Bill Wilson. Ragtime. Score and parts. 29 pages. Alexander Wilson #432155. Published by Alexander Wilson (A0.774867). Though it never became as popular as some other tunes of the ragtime era, That Italian Rag by Al Piantadosi is undoubtedly a fine specimen of the genre. Introduce your audience to a new favorite and try out this brooding rag as a contrast to more cheerful pieces. As a Tin Pan Alley composer, Al Piantadosi was right there in the mid- to lower end of the pack, popularity-wise. But his That Italian Rag is a slower, yet charming specimen of ragtime. Our arrangement of this fine piece gives everybody in your brass quintet an opportunity to shine, and your audience a chance to discover a new favorite. Includes world parts (horn in Eb, trombone in Bb TC, tuba in Eb TC, and tuba in Bb TC). Performance time is approximately 2:30. Woodwind Ensemble,Woodwind Quintet Bassoon,Clarinet,English Horn,Flute,Oboe - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1291890 Composed by Johann Sebastian Bach (1685 - 1750). Arranged by Pat Spence. Baroque,Chamber,Contest,Early Music,Festival,Instructional. 60 pages. Piper Publications #882501. Published by Piper Publications (A0.1291890). Bach’s Italian Concerto BWV 971 was composed for a two manual harpsichord and was first published in 1735.The style is that of the Italian concerto grosso and clearly reflects Bach’s great admiration of the works of Antonio Vivaldi which he had studied extensively. The ritornello style opening and closing movements are lively and joyful enclosing the arioso style Andante of great melancholy beauty. In arranging the Andante I have shared the long melodic line between the five players which will require some careful blending of tone and tuning as the melody passes from player to player. The effect intended is that of a sympathetic conversation between good friends.Players of advanced intermediate standard standard will, I hope, enjoy the challenge of this arrangement of this amazing music.

Choral Choir (Mixed) - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.576366 Composed by David Warin Solomons. 20th Century,Christmas,Classical,Contemporary,World. Octavo. 27 pages. David Warin Solomons #18013. Published by David Warin Solomons (A0.576366). A vivid and at times raucous celebration of Saturnalia, in Latin, for an ensemble of voices and instruments (including various percussion, woodwind and brass instruments). The sound sample is a sung performance by the composer with an electronic preview of the instruments. Further explanations: Song for Saturnalia - a raucous and fun romp - in whole tones (since there is scant evidence of the types of scales used in those days - whole tones just seem to work in this context). The Latin words make references to relatively modern times but the spirit of Saturnalia is timeless, after all. The pileum (also written pilleum) is the little cap that slave wore during Saturnalia to show they were free men and women on that day - they would point to their cap and say libertus sum (I am a free person) and omnes aequales sumus (we are all equal). The words (and translation - both by me) are as follows: Saturnalia Song Io Saturnalia! Hodie igitur dominus noster non es. [Hooray, it’s Saturnalia, so today you’re not our boss] Hodie omnes aequales sumus. Io! [Today we are all equal, hooray!] [spoof of USA Anthem] Salve O Frutici [Hi there, Bush] Ecce meum pileum: [Look, see my little cap of freedom] libertus sum [I’m a free man] [spoof of UK Anthem] Salve O Campestri [Hi there, Blair] Ecce meum pileum: [Look, see my little cap of freedom] libertus sum [I’m a free man] [spoof of German Anthem] Salve O Candelari [Hi there Brandt] Ecce meum pileum: [Look, see my little cap of freedom] libertus sum [I’m a free man] Io Saturnalia, Io! [Hooray, it’s Saturnalia, hooray!] [Note on the invented names (used in the vocative in the song of course): Fruticius is based on the word frutex a bush - it’s also used to mean blockhead in Roman comedies, but I can’t help that!. Campestrius is based on campester - a plain or place of clear ground (Blair is the Celtic equivalent word - a forest clearing!) Candelarius is based on candela - a taper or candle - ie something burning hence Brandt (yes, I know he’s earlier than the other two politicians, but, hey, it’s all a bit of anachronistic fun!)].

Concert Band - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1008264 Composed by William Brenner. Contemporary. Score and parts. 80 pages. William Brenner #5370501. Published by William Brenner (A0.1008264). Halifax was devastated on 6 December 1917 when two ships collided in the city's harbour, one of them a munitions ship loaded with explosives bound for the battlefields of the First World War. What followed was one of the largest human-made explosions prior to the detonation of the first atomic bombs in 1945.(...)In early December, one of the merchant ships in port was the large, Norwegian vessel Imo, en route from Halifax to New York to pick up relief supplies (...) Another was the French munitions ship Mont-Blanc - filled with tons of benzol, the high explosive picric acid, TNT and gun cotton - arriving in Halifax to join a convoy across the ocean.(...)The Imo was departing the harbour on the morning of 6 December 1917 (...) Imo had an experienced, local harbour pilot on board, William Hayes, who knew the navigation rules of the harbour. However, earlier encounters that morning with two inbound vessels moving towards Bedford Basin - both of which Imo had passed starboard-to-starboard - resulted in the unusual position that Imo now occupied, too far to the east (...) The Mont-Blanc had arrived outside Halifax the previous day and anchored overnight at the mouth of the harbour. On the morning of 6 December, the ship was cleared by harbour authorities to proceed toward Bedford Basin. Despite the Mont-Blanc's dangerous cargo, there was no special protocol for the passage of munitions ships in the harbour. Other ships such as the Imo were not ordered to hold their positions that morning until the Mont-Blanc had made safe passage through the port. Francis Mackey, Mont-Blanc's pilot, was guiding the ship inbound on the Dartmouth-side of the Narrows, when he encountered the Imo heading straight towards him in what he believed was Mont-Blanc's lane. Mackey would later maintain that the Imo was moving at an unsafe speed for such a large, unwieldly ship in the harbour, and also that incoming ships (in this case Mont-Blanc) had the right-of-way over outgoing vessels. Regardless of the accuracy of those claims, what is certain is that the Imo was sailing too far to the east, in what should have been Mont-Blanc's path. After a series of whistles and miscommunications between the officers and pilots on the two ships, and failed manoeuvres to avoid a collision, the Imo struck the starboard bow of the Mont-Blanc. After a few moments the two ships parted, leaving a gash in Mont-Blanc's hull and generating sparks that ignited volatile grains of dry picric acid, stored below its decks. (...) The Mont-Blanc exploded at 9:04:35 a.m., sending out a shock wave in all directions, followed by a tsunami that washed violently over the Halifax and Dartmouth shores. More than 2.5 square km of Richmond were totally levelled, either by the blast, the tsunami, or the structure fires caused when buildings collapsed inward on lanterns, stoves and furnaces.Homes, offices, churches, factories, vessels (including the Mont-Blanc), the railway station and freight yards - and hundreds of people in the immediate area - were obliterated. (...) Across Halifax, there were miraculous stories of survival. And equally, stories of tragedy. Many children were killed on their walk to school that morning, or blinded by flying glass. Those that survived the blast stumbled home, only to find their houses shattered, or their parents dead or wounded, among the wreckage. (...) Every year on 6 December, people gather above the Narrows to hear the ringing of the memorial's carillon bells, and to remember the victims of the disaster. www.thecanadianencyclopedia.ca/en/article/halifax-explosion

Piano,Tuba - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1002836 Composed by Kyle Vanderburg. Contemporary. Score and part. 33 pages. NoteForge #6113517. Published by NoteForge (A0.1002836). I spent New Year's Eve 2018 in Nye, Montana, visiting family and friends. One of those friends is an imaging specialist who regaled us with an explanation of his most recent project, which he described as calibrating the moon. Specifically, he was talking about the NASA ARCSTONE mission to calibrate the moon's reflectance to use as an accurate reference, primarily in climate science. The idea is that we have all this data about global warming and atmospheric changes, and a lot of that data uses the brightness of the moon as a control variable, but we don't actually have a precise definition of how bright the moon is. Ever since I was a part of that conversation, I knew that I wanted calibrating the moon as a title, and everything that came after that plays with the idea of moon themes or of doing big impossible-sounding things. When Connor Challey approached me about writing for tuba, Calibrating the Moon was an obvious choice. The work opens with Syzygy, a term describing the straight line between the sun, moon, and Earth that occurs every new and full moon. The movement starts dark and brooding, moves to an energetic middle section, and returns to being mysterious, kind of like a lunar cycle. Fun fact: This movement's theme is actually a tuba setting of the phrase Calibrating the moon. The Second movement, Spectral Reflectance, is slow and shiny. NDSU was fortunate to have portfolio tubist (and Connor's mentor) Sam Pilafian as a visiting guest artist for several years, and I finished Syzygy around the time of his passing. I spent a lot of time thinking about Sam while putting the second movement together, and I quoted a couple of his favorite tuba concerti. The work ends with Libration. If you were to watch a time-lapse video of a lunar cycle, you'd notice that the moon not only transitions from new to full to new, but also sort of oscillates or wags. That's Libration. The movement is likewise off-kilter, playing with the listener's sense of time through alternating time signatures.https://kylevanderburg.com/music/calibrating-the-moon/

Violin Solo - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1514913 Composed by Ave Asán. 21st Century,Chamber,Classical,Contemporary,Multicultural,World. 30 pages. Editorial Copistas Acuario #1089409. Published by Editorial Copistas Acuario (A0.1514913). ----------------------------------------------This piece is inspired by Suche Malinche, one of the characters of “El Gu?egu?ense o Macho Rato?n”, a Nicaraguan play and also Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. In this play, the Gu?egu?ense convinces Governor Tastuanes (Suche Malinche’s father) to marry the girl to one of his sons (Don Forcico). The Suche Malinche Prelude arises from the need to empower this woman, whose function in El Gu?egu?ense is to be an instrument to gain access to power. Neither her voice nor her will exist. That is why in the piece, La Suche (represented by the violinist) begins to question her silence, and prays to Guacha?n (San Sebastia?n, patron saint of Carazo); but instead of the saint, Quetzalco?atl appears to her, giving her courage and strength. Little by little she feels how her voice emerges, alternating with vowels and reiterated sounds, which are mixed with an impetuous violin, until she builds her speech and ends up saying: “Ya neme nequi nitipampa” (I am here, defending my cause.).
