Last month I went to visit a friend of mine in Canton, GA, and it inspired me to write this song. It's kind of like one of my earlier compositions Kentucky Hills. Georgia is definitely one of my favorite states, and I absolutely *love* to travel. No matter how long the drive, I will go anywhere if I am determined enough. This was a seven-to-eight hour drive and was definitely worth it. Earlier this year I also drove up to University of Northern Florida in Jacksonville, FL, which is two and a half hours north of me. From there I took a friend up to Jekyll Island, which was beautiful. Speaking of UNF, that is where I am going for my fall term. I'm going to major in music education and also finish my AA up there. During the composing of the music my mother was sick in a nursing home with dementia and copd. My Mom always spoke of going on adventures and journeys; this prayer in many ways reflected her faith so it seemed fitting to write the music around the theme of Journey On My Way with My Way reflecting Gods way. By the time the piece was finished she had passed away. I sang the piece at her funeral commemorating her new adventure and journey in the presence of God. The Music A simple melody in the spirit of the great shaker hymn Simple Gifts. The A section of the music represents a stanza in the prayer which is then followed by a short B section where God reminds us to Journey On, Journey On My Way. The first AA sections are sung by a soloists, followed by the entire choir and then concluding in a bravura section featuring 2 tenors.

In 1956, he recorded the notorious version upon which this arrangement is based. Notorious because he didn't even remember recording it and the single was banned from many radio stations.  I Put a Spell on You didn't even make the charts but still sold more than a million copies and is considered one of the greatest Rock and Roll tracks of all time. It all sort of just fell in place. I found out I could do more destroying a song and screaming it to death.This arrangement for string quartet is a relatively straight-forward idiomatic transcription in the same tonality as the original recording, so you could even play along with it for fun. In this case, since standard notation has certain limitations, it is recommended that the 1st violin and viola players listen to the original track to find out how their notes were performed and work out their own interpretations. Strillato means ranting-ly, screamingly, but a mere word is not enough. The level is on the easier side of advanced; quickly rehearsed by professional quartets and an accessible challenge for experienced students. Waaa-aa-o-oo!
