The Entertainer is sub-titled A Rag Time Two Step, which was a form of dance popular until about 1911, and a style which was common among rags written at the time. The piece is a 1902 classic piano rag written by Scott Joplin and it was sold first as sheet music, and in the 1910s as piano rolls that would play on player pianos.The first recording was by blues and ragtime musicians, the Blue Boys in 1928, played on mandolin and guitar.

Its structure is: Intro–AA–BB–A–CC–Intro2–DD.

It is primarily set in the key of C major; however, for the C section (commonly referred to as the 'Trio'), it modulates to the subdominant, F major, then through a transitional passage modulates back to C major for the D section. The B section contains an indication that the melody is to be played an octave higher on the repeat.

In the June 7, 1903, St. Louis Globe-Democrat, contemporary composer Monroe H. Rosenfeld described The Entertainer as the best and most euphonious of Joplin's compositions to that point. It is a jingling work of a very original character, embracing various strains of a retentive character which set the foot in spontaneous action and leave an indelible imprint on the tympanum.

Suggested by the rag's dedication to James Brown and his Mandolin Club, author Rudi Blesh wrote that some of the melodies recall the pluckings and the fast tremolos of the little steel-stringed plectrum instruments. Stark issued an arrangement of the piece for two mandolins and a guitar.

Noble and stately, Processional March is written for your second year beginning Band.  The elements of this piece include dynamic contrasts, varying articulations, and a new time & key signature that is often not seen in first year literature, while maintaining an appropriate range for your students—for reference, the clarinets are under the break, with their highest note being the 3rd line Bb and the lowest being the B-natural below the staff.  Processional March is written in 2/4, with the first half of the piece in Eb and the second in Bb. With a tempo marking of Moderato {quarter note = 108}, this march comes in under 3 minutes, making this piece an attainable piece to learn for any upcoming concert. The rhythmic structure of this piece is strict quarter and 8th note rhythms for all wind instruments. The snare drum part also has the same rhythmic structure, but also includes 9-stroke rolls, flams, flam-taps and paired 8th-two 16th rhythms. The percussion section has only four parts–Crash Cymbals, Snare/Bass Drum and Glockenspiel—making this ideal for any sized percussion section.

Processional March follows an |:AA:|-B-C form. Throughout the piece, each instrument visits the harmonic structure beneath the melody, as well as playing the melodies featured in the different sections. Part-wise, all of the wind instruments are written in a comfortable range and have unison parts, with the flutes, clarinets and & trumpets having certain measures divided into two parts, still maintaining unison rhythms.  The flutes are divided specifically into Flute 1 and Flute 2/Oboe, which is ideal if you do not have an oboe in your beginning band.  Students will enjoy this straight forward march and directors will find rehearsing it to be enjoyable and allows for the teaching of newer techniques and skills to advance their band’s level of playing!

This is an arrangement of four Norwegian folk tunes arranged for my friend and colleague Lasse Tronstad, for his annual trumpet school in Norway. Set out in four choirs of five, I suggest an antiphonal positioning of the performers. Following is a list of the folk tunes I used: Aa Ola, min Ola, Alle mann hadde fota, Dæ va eigøng kung'e, Druen vokser paa vor klode. This piece can also be used with any set of 20 like pitched treble clef reading instruments. e.g. Five Clarinets, Five Trumpets, Five Tenor/Soprano Saxophones, Five Bb Baritones, Five Flugelhorns, Five Euphoniums, Five Cornets; or any combination of the above, mix and match! OR: Violins & Violas? Offbeat in Two is a vibrant piece that is all about the rhythmic drive! The downbeat is always a rest as are most of the cardinal beats. The notes are easy; the difficulty level depends on how well you feel offbeat rhythms. I have marked it as Intermediate not only because of rhythms, but also because it is all tongued and up tempo. For some instruments, Parts 1 & 4 might push the upper and lower range limits. Form is AA, bridge, BB, D.C., Coda with the A theme in a contrasting key. Individually the parts are not difficult, but it is the dynamic way they pulse together and interact that creates interest and excitement. It is a wild ride for one and a half minutes! With the right drive and energy this can be a real showpiece!
