Cantata No.   4, BMV   4, Christ lag in Todesbanden (also spelled Todes Banden) (Christ lay in death's bonds) is a cantata for Easter written by Johann Sebastian Bach and is his earliest surviving Church Cantata. it was probably written in 1707 when he was 22 years old. It is a Chorale Cantata, a style in which both the text and music are based on a hymn. In this instance, the source was Martin Luther's hymn of the same name which became a main Easter hymn in German Lutheranism.
Regis Bookshar has transcribed and arranged three selections based on this hymn tune, two from Bach's Cantata No.   4, BMV   4, and also his Chorale Prelude, BMV 625. They may be played individually or as a trilogy and each movement is more complex than the previous one. The first selection in this trilogy is the Chorale, Christ lag in Todesbanden, this final chorus from his Cantata No.   4, a straightforward four-part chorale setting of the hymn (Regis has also added a fifth part). This is followed by Bach's Chorale Prelude, BMV 625, a piece from his Orgelbuchlein (Little Organ Book), a collection of 46 Preludes for organ, written almost exclusively during the 1708-1717 period, while Bach was court organist at Weimar. For the final selection, Regis has place the polyphonic and imitative chorus, Es war ein wunderlicher Krieg, da Tod und Leben rungen (It was a strange battle, that death and life waged), which Bach had placed in the middle of his Cantata No.   4.
This arrangement is for a Brass Quintet, consisting of 3 Bb Trumpets and 2 French Horns. Included are a score and a complete set of parts (30 pages).

Mary Ann Joyce-Walters writes: The first two sections of In Anguish and Hope are based on verses from two terrifying Psalms; the third section is a setting of a passage from Micah. I chose to use these texts after listening to a friend of mine speak about the death of her son.

I became keenly aware of her personal and genuine feelings of rage against God, which were so similar to David’s Why do You hide Your face and forget our persecution and our oppression? Christ’s My God, My God, why have you forsaken me? and Elie Wiesel’s Never shall I forget those flames which consumed my faith forever. I realized that a far more difficult question (and perhaps more deeply personal) than that of asking God to forgive us is Can we forgive God?

After asking that intimate and bold question, the words of Micah recall that peace, based on justice, will come one day: you shall be at peace and unafraid.…nations shall not lift up sword against nation….you shall bear fruit in justice and peace.

In the quaint village of Hollybrook, Christmas was a time of joy and togetherness. But this year, a malicious pukwudgie named Bramble planned to spread fear and chaos. On Christmas Eve, as villagers gathered around the grand tree for the annual lighting ceremony, Bramble struck. He made the lights flicker and go out and twisted the ornaments into grotesque shapes. He snuck into homes, swapping sugar for ashes and hiding stockings in unreachable places, casting a dark spell over the village. By morning, Hollybrook was in disarray. Children found their stockings missing, cookies ruined, and the tree ominous in the square. Fear gripped the town. Amidst the chaos, a brave girl named Lucy refused to let fear win. She gathered her friends and ventured into the forest, following eerie footprints. They found Bramble muttering dark incantations under a gnarled tree. Caught in a trap made from holly and mistletoe, Bramble hissed his intentions to spread fear. Lucy, with steely resolve, offered him a chance at redemption. Reluctantly, Bramble agreed. They returned to the village, and with Bramble’s help, dispelled the dark enchantments. The ornaments returned to their beautiful forms, sugar replaced the ashes, and the stockings were found. That night, the tree lit up, and Bramble felt warmth in his heart for the first time. The villagers, initially wary, accepted him as he helped create beautiful ice sculptures, adding magic to the festivities. From that year on, Bramble became part of Hollybrook. His dark nature slowly transformed under the light of friendship and acceptance. Every Christmas, his magic brought extra sparkle to the celebrations, reminding everyone that even the darkest hearts could find redemption through kindness and love.

Rafael Hernández, born in Puerto Rico in 1892, is one of the most influential Latin American composers of the 20th century. His work spans multiple genres, but he is particularly renowned for his contributions to Puerto Rican music, where his compositions have become staples. Among his most famous works is El Cumbanchero, a lively, infectious piece that exemplifies the rhythmic vitality and melodic richness of Latin music. Written in 1943, El Cumbanchero quickly became a hit, celebrated for its exuberant syncopation and catchy melodies that evoke the spirit of the Caribbean.

El Cumbanchero has been widely covered and arranged by various artists, but one of the most unique interpretations came from the flamboyant American pianist, Liberace. Known for his elaborate showmanship, Liberace’s version of El Cumbanchero brings a dazzling, virtuosic flair to the piece, combining his classical technique with a flair for dramatic embellishment. His rendition adds layers of complexity and a certain theatricality that aligns perfectly with his style, transforming the original piece into a showcase for his talents.

Inspired by Liberace's arrangement, Neil Crossland created a four-hand version of El Cumbanchero based on this interpretation. This arrangement allows two pianists to bring even more depth and dynamism to the piece, capturing both the original's infectious energy and Liberace's intricate, virtuosic style. By blending Hernández's vibrant composition with Liberace's unique interpretation, Crossland's four-hand version offers a fresh and exciting way to experience this Latin American classic.

As an adult I occasionally try to remember and or capture child-like experiences-maybe not so much the actual event, but the emotive atmosphere left from impressions long ago embedded in the psyche.Each movement of this work is based on spontaneous and uncalculated musical imagery of dreams and childhood reflections. I have deliberately avoided the professional composer’s bag of developmental tricks and worked for a more free flow of simple melodic ideas: they go wherever they want.Movement IInspired by the feelings I had growing up on Merritt Island Florida with my older sister Barbara. This music was a gift to her on the occasion of her 2004 marriage in Flemington New Jersey. It was originally scored for a brass quartet with which I performed. I have written three other brass quintets, and when I started thinking about this one (my fourth) this seemed like a logical choice for a first movement.Movement IIBased on a tune that came to me in a dream. It is dedicated to my wife Lois (we also married in 2004) and has a formal title of Wake Up To A Melody. I originally scored it for jazz band-more specifically for the excellent Salt Lake Alternative Jazz Orchestra, and it has recently been recorded by that group. I like the simplicity of this melody, and felt it would make a natural second movement for this brass quintet.Movement IIIThe third and most difficult movement is Tangoragrondo. It is literally a rondo with a turn-of-the century (19th-20th) ragtime melody/gallop occupying the A theme followed by a Tango (inspired by trips to Santiago Chile) for the B theme. The return to the rag (A theme) is then followed by a fantasy development (C area) with a return to to the rag (A theme) followed by a coda that recalls material from the first movement. The form is quite simple- ABACA-Coda.The material was originally developed as a movement for my double concerto Letting Midnight Out On Bail written for the Duehlmeier-Gritton piano duo and orchestra. It was recorded by the Warsaw Philharmonic and has been released on CD. A second version for two pianos has also been recorded and released by the Duehlmeier-Gritton piano duo. This orchestration for brass quintet will be the final resting place for this chaotic rondo.
