The melodies from George Gershwin's (1898-1937) musicals, from 'Porgy and Bess', from orchestral pieces like 'Rhapsody in Blue' or 'An American in Paris', we all know them! But the career of the young musician started as a pianist in a music publishing house where he was to encourage customers to buy music by playing it. Soon he began to compose music himself and caught the attention of the Broadway, which paved the way to his international career. Inspired by Frédéric Chopin's 24 Préludes, he began to write his own 'Preludes' for the piano in the mid-1920s: Of the five preludes composed by him, he used two for the violin composition 'Short Story' and presented the other three at a concert on 4 December 1926. These 'Preludes' combine classical moments and jazz elements into an effective whole and can be played individually or as a little jazz sonata (fast – slow – fast). Thanks to the present arrangement, the charming miniatures are now available in a version for solo instrument and piano accompaniment.

Ella discovers that a locked room in the house is rented by a poet - Ben Pascoe - whose work holds a deep fascination for her. The room is held for Pascoe, though he visits rarely. Ella's obsession with Pascoe grows in parallel with the progress of Stephen's biggest City deal. She begins by imagining the poet's voice as she reads his work, but this quickly grows to fantasised encounters with Pascoe in his locked room. Stephen returns from the City and makes love to Ella, but it is not him she wishes for. We see the real Pascoe only once, with Susan. As Stephen's financial dreams are realised and Ella's fantasy consumes her, she learns of Pascoe's death. Es kann, wenn man den Titel wichtig nimmt, ein Portrait der Person Johannes Brahms', nicht seiner Musik darstellen und verweist im Duktus auf die Blütezeit des Klaviertrios im 19. Jahrhundert. Der Beginn - zunächst im Gestus eines Violinkonzerts - ist ein Zwiegesang zwischen Geige und Cello, zu dem später das Klavier hinzutritt. Eine im großen Ton zu spielende Stelle, unisono für Geige und Cello mit treibendem Klavier, bricht unvermittelt in einen chaotischen Abschnitt um, der schließlich das Klavier mit verzweifeltem Hämmern in die extremste Lage treibt. Diese äußerste Erregung wird zurückgeführt in eine quasi-Reprise mit einem cantablen, schmerzlichen Abgesang, der relativ kurz ist und steil abfällt in einen unvermittelt abschließenden stumpfen d-Moll-Akkord. Man kann das Stück als Psychogramm der verborgenen inneren Lebenschaotik von Brahms deuten und sein Bestreben, diese musikalisch zu bewältigen. -Wilhelm Killmayer.
