German.At first described as a 'religious song' by Schumann, the motet 'Verzweifle nicht' could be heard with organ accompaniment for the first time on 4 July 1850 on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the University's St. Pauli choral society in Leipzig. He wrote the organ version specifically for this performance for he had originally planned an orchestral accompaniment. That, however, could only be completed later and was eventually premiered in 1853. In a letter to Schumann, Herrmann Langer, the conductor of both world premieres, mentioned 'the wonderful effect which the same has produced' and that, to him, 'the motet was one of the most stimulating and inspiring creations in male-voice literature'.

When Hans Werner Henze received a commission to instrument early lieder by Richard Wagner at the end of the 1990s, he realised that he could not simply recreate the piano part in a scoring for classical-romantic orchestra. ’It was not only my wish but also a necessity to progress much further than the path I had taken in my Wesendonck arrangements if this operation was not to prove to be an entirely superfluous exercise. Numerous changes have therefore presented themselves during this process, not arbitrarily, but out of a certain artistic curiosity: for example changes of metre, tonal and tessitura transformations and the realisation and completion of the two fragments ’Extase’ and ’La tombe dit à la rose’. Ein englisches Theater kam nach Paris und führte Shakespeares Dramen auf, welche bis dahin dem französischen Publikum völlig unbekannt waren. Ich wohnte im Odéon der ersten Vorstellung des Hamlet bei. Ich sah als Ophelia Harriet Smithson, welche fünf Jahre später meine Frau wurde. Die Wirkung ihres wunderbaren Talents oder vielmehr ihres dramatischen Genies auf meine Phantasie und mein Herz kann nur mit derjenigen verglichen werden, die der Dichter selbst auf mich ausübte.
