The general inspiration for the music was an idea of Durham, garnered from two or three short visits and a reading of a short history – so a sort of “Durham of the mind�, a stylized Durham; ‘my’ Durham, if you will, imagined into music. However, the defining inspiration for the piece was the Cathedral. My first visit to Durham in 2001 saw me standing open-mouthed on Palace Green, and then in silent awe as I walked into that formidable magnificence inside. Most of the themes came from the days immediately following my first experience of this extraordinary, inspiring building. The feeling that the very stones and pillars themselves are imbued with centuries of prayer, with people’s joy, grief, despair, even anger; gratitude and hope. As the tunes and chords and sounds started to organize themselves in my mind and onto manuscript paper, I realized that I was writing a sort of “day in the life of Durham�, and that the Cathedral would be its beginning, would be in its middle, and would be at its ending. Dieses Stück habe ich 1949 komponiert mit dem Bestreben, den Begriff Sinfonik von der Vorstellung klassischer und romantischer Formen zu trennen. Der Hörer darf also hier nicht jene Elemente suchen wollen, die der Sinfonie des 19. Jahrhunderts eigen waren. Die Titel über den drei Teilen des Stücks haben keinen beschreibenden Charakter, sondern sind nur als Hinweise auf ihre musikalische Atmosphäre zu betrachten. Der 1. Teil beginnt mit einer Einleitung in ruhigem Zeitmaß, welcher eine lebhafte Passacaglia folgt, deren zweistimmige Bassfigur, zunächst vom Klavier vorgetragen, von Variation zu Variation durch verschiedene Instrumentengruppen in höhere Lagen gezogen wird, bei gleichzeitigem und regelmäßigem Sich-Steigern des Tempos, bis sie zum Schluss durch die hohen Violinen hindurch in das Anfangszeitmaß einmündet. Der 2. Teil beginnt in der Schluss-Stimmung des ersten und wechselt dann in eine vorwiegend von Blechbläsern getragene Periode von erregten Signalen und Rufen, welchen ein ruhiges, auf gleichmäßiger Achtelbewegung liegendes Andantino folgt, in dem Holzbläser, Harfe und Vibraphon konzertieren. Dieses Andantino wird in zwei Hälften geteilt durch einen Hymnus der Streicher und Bläser. Die zweite Hälfte des Andantino gleitet in einen stillen und aphoristischen Epilog über. Der 3. Teil ist eine lebhaft bewegte Folge kleiner Gruppen und Kurzmotive, deren formale Herkunft sich jeweils aus den rhythmischen und spannungsmäßigen Gegebenheiten des Vorhergegangenen erklärt. Kurz vor der Stretta liegt noch eine ruhige Strecke: Ein von Glockeninstrumenten umspielter Kanon der Violoncelli und Violinen. - Hans Werner Henze.

Potpourris, as this type of domestic music-making can be called, often gave bourgeois music lovers of the time their only opportunity to become acquainted with and to discuss important or popular works by prominent tone-poets of die day. Carl Joachim Andersen (1847-1909) was one of the most important and internationally best regarded flautists of his day; in later years he also performed as a conductor. These works reveal him to have been a composer with taste, a strong sense of form and a mastery of harmony.

Although Bertold Hummel composed this Scherzo for bassoon and chamber orchestra more than fifty years ago, the piece still captivates every listener with its youthful, carefree liveliness. Virtuoso and witty, it does justice to its title in every respect. It was created in 1957 upon commission of the Kleines Unterhaltungsorchester Südwestfunk Baden-Baden. The solo part of the four-minute concert piece with the tempo indication 'allegro molto' was tailor-made by Hummel for the orchestra's principal bassoonist Helmut Böker. In addition to the hire material, a piano score with solo part is now available on sale.
