Key: A major.The autograph of this sonata, composed in 1789, was initially extant in Bückeburg under the title of 'Sonata per il Cembalo o Piano-Forte et Violoncello obligato' but was lost in the Second World War. The version then published was merely a substantially revised version which had been transposed to D major. Our new edition reconstructs the work's original state (in A major), taking the common performance practice principles of articulation and dynamics into account. A rewarding, yet fairly easy piece suitable for lessons and concerts which can be regarded as an important link to Beethoven's sonatas.

In the solo part, I wanted to express all tonal and technical facets of this wonderful instrument as clearly as possible. But in the score, another two important 'persons' can be recognized: On the one hand, the cor anglais which constantly imitates the solo part or answers to it (almost like a 'duet' that extends over the whole work) and, on the other hand, the orchestra itself. The role of the latter is not just limited to the accompaniment of the soloist, but the musicians are allowed to show the virtuosity of their performance both in the ensemble and in solos.' I have concentrated on just one image, that of the snake, which in Jewish and Christian tradition is a symbol of temptation and betrayal, and of sinfulness in general. Many years ago I saw a sculpture of Anish Kapoor: in this sculpture there were two huge halved orbs hanging from two sides of the room. The halved orbs were dark purple blue, which was so dark that the end of the orbs (their inside) was not visible. They seemed, instead, like endless openings. The piece Gradual Edge is an attempt to trace, as if through touch, and follow the imaginary passage on this half orb, attempting to figure out, through touch, the transition from substance to the endless cavities inside in increasing darkness. The piece is dedicated to Christina Meißner and Poul Skjølstrup Larsen. Chaya CzernowinChaya Czernowins Gradual edge für Violoncello und Orgel ist durch eine Skulptur von Anish Kapoor inspiriert, die aus zwei riesigen Halbkugeln besteht. Es ist ein Versuch, dem Übergang von äußerer Substanz zu den endlosen Hohlräumen im Inneren der zunehmenden Dunkelheit nachzuforschen.

Teils des Wohltemperierten Klaviers von J. S. Bach für Violine und Klavier schrieb und 1859 mit dem Text des „Ave Maria“ unterlegte. Dieses „Ave Maria von Bach/Gounod“ wurde zu einem der weltweit populärsten Stücke der klassischen Musik. Auch „Jésus von Nazareth“ hat eine fließende, bisweilen schwerelose Melodik, die frei von großen Sprüngen und extremen Lagen ist. Die Stimme kommt durch die einfache, sich unterordnende melodische Begleitung zur Geltung.

During my compositional preparation, I repeatedly found myself returning to this work. I had a number of different formal models in mind, but felt myself gravitating towards the rhapsodic character of toccata form so that my new composition for organ ultimately became a toccata developing from a pedal point on the fundamental note ’D’. As is appropriate to the volume of a large modern organ, my concept focuses on symphonic tonal layers whose suggestive maelstrom originates from the inner strength of repeating elements and their register- like augmentation, culminating in the unleashing of polyrhythmic progressions.
