In the solo part, I wanted to express all tonal and technical facets of this wonderful instrument as clearly as possible. But in the score, another two important 'persons' can be recognized: On the one hand, the cor anglais which constantly imitates the solo part or answers to it (almost like a 'duet' that extends over the whole work) and, on the other hand, the orchestra itself. The role of the latter is not just limited to the accompaniment of the soloist, but the musicians are allowed to show the virtuosity of their performance both in the ensemble and in solos.' Caprices for solo violin have a long tradition; the list of collections in which virtuoso violinist-composers archived testimonies of their virtuoso violin art ranges from Locatelli to Paganini, from Gaviniès to Dont. Among them is the French violinist Pierre Rode (1774-1839) who added his 24 Capricen in Form einer Etüde für Violine allein to this genre. Even today, they still form part of the indispensable repertoire of violin students, particularly since, notwithstanding the purely technical side, they are also attractive pieces of music. As a teacher at the famous Paris Conservatoire, Rode, together with Pierre Baillot and Rodolphe Kreutzer, laid the foundations for comprehensive violin didactics and methodology: the 24 Caprices are important contributions to this music-educational work. The present new edition is based on the first edition of Paris of 1820, providing the original score, especially two variants of fingering, a 'normal version', and a version specifically designed for small hands. Technical as well as musical challenges make Rode's Caprices a fascinating study and performance object.

German.Im Frühling 1957 schrieb ich Nachtstücke und Arien, mit Ingeborgs Gedichten Freies Geleit und Im Gewitter der Rosen. Das letztere bestand anfangs nur aus einem Vierzeiler bis sie mir für die Komposition, aus Gründen der Symmetrie noch einen zweiten Vierzeiler hinzuschrieb, der das Gedicht noch viel schöner macht. In diesen Zeilen ist ungefähr die vorherrschende Stimmung von Nachtstücke und Arien wiedergegeben, auch wenn in der anderen Arie ein chorischer Hymnus aus eine schöne, atombombenfreie Zukunft gesungen und gespielt wird, was sich im instrumentalen Finale fortsetzt, in dessen Zentrum übrigens ein paar Noten aus dem Epilog von Ondine auftauchen. Mit dieser Musik hatte ich wohl die extremste Gegenposition zur sogenannten Darmstädter Schule erreicht, und so nimmt es denn auch nicht weiter wunder, dass bei der von Gloria Davy gesungenen und von Hans Rosbaud glänzend dirigierten Uraufführung am 20. Oktober 1957 in Donaueschingen drei Vertreter des anderen Extrems, Boulez, Nono (mein Freund der Gigi!) und Stockhausen, demonstrativ schon nach den ersten Takten von ihren Plätzen aufsprangen und den Saal verließen. So entwanden sie sich den Schönheiten meiner jüngsten Bemühungen! - Hans Werner Henze (Reiselieder mit böhmischen Quinten).
