Sam religiously walked five miles everyday of his life.  Suddenly, he had to have an operation on his foot, of all places. While sitting in the hospital waiting for his results, images of my father walking with a cane paraded as a three-legged waltz. You’ll hear motives representing the different kitty personalities and a special kind of timbral trill effect not usually found in intermediate level flute repertoire. If you’re allergic to cats, this piece won’t make you sneeze, but it might make you chuckle.Performance note — The timbral trills color the note, but change the pitch very little. For the timbral trill on G#5, finger G#5 and trill the E key with the middle right hand finger. For the timbral trill on A4, finger A4 and trill the F key with the right hand index finger. Ma’iingan (pronounced mah IN-gun) is the Ojibwe word for wolf (Canis lupus). The poem “Aangodinong� (Sometimes) from Wewemi by Margaret Noodin inspired the piece. Ma’iingan issues a call to action to address the extinction crisis by saving the wolves from hunters and habitat loss. Transcribed wolf calls provide some of the melodic material for the piece and luckily fall in a good range for the flute. Designed for intermediate level flutists, the piece employs pitch bends and timbral trills using straightforward alternate fingerings as well as optional slight lip bends. These accessible extended techniques give the intermediate player an introduction to features usually found only in more difficult music.
