Choral Choir (SATB) - Level 4 - Digital Download

SKU: A0.928962

Composed by American Traditional Lullaby. Arranged by Donald A. Mills. A Cappella,Children,Folk,Traditional. Octavo. 2 pages. Donald A Mills #3372897. Published by Donald A Mills (A0.928962).

This song is a lullaby, a traditional American folk song.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia: All the Pretty Little Horses (also known as Hush-a-bye) is a traditional lullaby from the Early United States. The origin of this song is not fully known, but the song is commonly thought to be of African American origin, yet the tune is more easily identified as English or Scottish in origin.

This SATB a cappella arrangement by Donald A. Mills ranges in the middle-to-upper levels of expertise. The singers must have a command of breath control, of keeping the tonal center under control, and in an ability to sing in a dissonant chord. The song's duration is comfortable for concert or competition. This beautiful tune is not commonly recognized but is a long-standing lullaby in the American tradition of music.

Also available here as a ttbb arrangement.

Your chorus and your audiences will love the sweet words, harmonies and melody. Such a rich American tradition. Sing the song as a soft lullaby, in a dream-state. Softly...softly...gently.

Composed by Traditional. Arranged by Laurie Betts Hughes. A Cappella,Contemporary,Folk,Traditional. Octavo. 5 pages. Dandelion Music Press #3103605. Published by Dandelion Music Press (A0.891196).

Movement four of four Cowboy Songs of the American Southwest

This fun-to sing TTBB a cappella concert arrangement set of regional folksongs are evocative of barbershop, concert, and a cappella styles and utilize some fun extended techniques in the second movement.  Also appropriate for a versatile barbershop or men's quartet, upper HS level or above.

These four cowboy songs that make up the song cycle Cowboy Songs of the American Southwest are among the nearly 3,000 field recordings recorded in the U.S. Southwest, Mexico and Spain collected by John Donald Robb over 40 year while at the University of New Mexico.  These recordings preserve many of the musical traditions of these areas, especially New Mexico and Southern Colorado, and include Native American, Hispano, Mexican and African American music, as well as railroad and cowboy songs, fiddle music and the music of festivals and fiestas.

I.  The Call of the Range- Evocative of a carefree, lone cowboy singing while strumming his ukulele.  Barbershop harmonies, similar to ukulele harmonies, suggest a personification of both the ukulele and the rangeland itself as a character in the unfolding drama of the seemingly solitary cowboy.
II. I'm Sad and I'm Lonely- Whispered syllables and whistles evoke percussion and a bowed saw in this despondent tale of unrequited love and solitude.
III. Wild Horse of the Desert- The melody fights with the downbeat to mimic the wild horse fighting against land rights and fencing.
IV. When Cockle Shells Turn Silver Bells- An overly carefree, lighthearted shrug at lost love to embrace the lone cowboy lifestyle.

Due to current restrictions of the John Donald Robb field recordings housed at the University of New Mexico, movements I. The Call of the Range and III. Wild Horse of the Desert are offered with permission and without charge with the purchase of public domain arrangements of II. I'm Sad and I'm Lonely and IV. When Cockle Shells Turn Silver Bells forming an entire song cycle.  Movements II. and IV. are also available for purchase individually.

Composed by Bruce Gowers, Carol Rosenstein, Michael Lloyd, and Traditional. Arranged by S Smith-Masters & Peet du Toit. Christian,Christmas. 11 pages. Peet du Toit #984753. Published by Peet du Toit (A0.1401574).

Kum ba yah (Come by here) is an African American spiritual song of disputed origin, but known to be sung in the Gullah culture of the islands off South Carolina and Georgia, with ties to enslaved Central Africans. The song is thought to have spread from the islands to other Southern states and the North, as well as other places in the world. The first known recording, of someone known only as H. Wylie, who sang in the Gullah dialect, was recorded by folklorist Robert Winslow Gordon in 1926. It later became a standard campfire song in Scouting and summer camps and enjoyed broader popularity during the folk revival of the 1950s and 1960s.

The song was originally an appeal to God to come and help those in need. In American politics, the song would later become part of a phrase (sing Kumbaya) denoting unrealistic, excessively optimistic compromises.

Here is a brilliant arrangement by S Smith-Masters orchestrated for a brass quintet and functional percussion.

Composed by R. Nathaniel Dett, Robert Nathaniel Dett. Arranged by Music for a While. 20th Century,Christian,Romantic Period,Sacred,Spiritual. Octavo. 11 pages. Music for a While #6416607. Published by Music for a While (A0.914176).

Robert Nathaniel Dett (1882-1943) was born in Canada before moving to the Unites States at the age of 11. He began studying piano at an early age and went on to be the first black American to graduate from Oberlin Conservatory of Music. Throughout his career he worked as a composer, organist, pianist, choral director and music professor; he received many awards for his music and writing and spent a period at the Fontainebleau School of Music south of Paris where he studied with Nadia Boulanger. Dett became well known for incorporating tunes and and elements of African American folk songs and spirituals into classical music.

Listen to the Lambs is scored for mixed unaccompanied chorus with solo soprano part and was originally published by G. Schirmer in 1914. It became one of his most famous choral works and was featured in The Oxford Book of Spirituals and Choral Music: A Norton Historical Anthology. There are modern recordings of the anthem performed by chamber choirs but Dett himself conducted a 900-voice performance of the work at Hampton University, Virginia where he was the director of the music department between 1928 and 1932.
