The word nouvelet doesn’t exist any more, but it is related to the modern French word nouvel meaning new. So the title proclaims a new Christmas song in honour of the newborn King. This rhythmically buoyant a cappella arrangement for male choir captures the exuberance of the Christmas spirit, proclaiming the good news of the birth of the newborn King. An introductory Noel section is skilfully used as interlude and modulatory material, with the contrasting textures and harmonic colours bringing a new flavour to this traditional 15th century seasonal favourite. It may be sung in either the original French or English. .

He Will Lead Me Home (choral church anthem composed in 2023)The InspirationA few Easter seasons ago, during one of our Tuesday Choir rehearsals, we were preparing for “Good Shepherd Sunday�. Diane our Choir director commented “there are very few Good Shepherd pieces to choose from�. One of our sopranos replied “Let's write our own�. I made note of it and this past year finally found the time and inspiration to give it a try. I did my usual research on the subject matter and then found a drawing of a Shepherd standing at the top of a hill with his sheep lined up behind him. Leaning on his staff the Shepherd was contemplating the safest route home. Upon his decision he looked back and called to his sheep. The MusicThe music begins with a piano introduction depicting the Shepherd standing at the top of the hill contemplating the safest route home, as noted earlier. Stately in nature it features a simple melodic idea, played by the right hand, which is then answered by a series of majestic chords. This “back and forth� continues until it reaches its climax at a D flat major chord against a slur from a high G to F. At this point we hear what will be a reoccurring chordal theme of C major to F major and later C minor to F major. The accompaniment begins, now in three quarter time signifying the sheep beginning to move in response to the shepherds call. The verse melody is drawn from the opening three notes of the introduction but with a different rhythm and repeats it self with underlying harmonic changes. The melody and chord structure is somewhat impressionistic in nature. Lyrically a contrast is drawn between how the Shepherd (Jesus) provides for his sheep (followers) and how God provides for the “sheep� (animals) through nature. As the verse comes to an end we are lead to the realization that “the shepherd is the Lord our King, the Good Shepherd King�. The refrain begins with the tenor continuing to solo on the main melody. �He Will Lead Home� is realized and proclaimed! A soprano descant is added for contrast. Harmonically the music makes use of the various minor key options, “melodic, harmonic and natural�. The refrain concludes proclaiming “The Good Shepherds the Way He's our Life!�. The second verse shadows the thought pattern of verse one leading to the refrain once more but this time a bridge is introduced to add drama with the piano playing a significant role. A return to the refrain is varied with the tenor singing a portion of it against softly played chords; but then resumes its rhythmic drive to its ultimate conclusion by repeating “the Good Shepherds the Way He's our Life!�.Program NotesVoicing can be varied based on what types of singers are available. For example this could be sung by 2 tenors with one singing the descant down an octave. Finally as noted in the score, the intro is optional though I prefer it be played; the shepherd contemplating a safe route is important in the music with its contrast to the verse music and important in our life of faith.

The tune, like so many ancient airs was claimed by both Scots and Irish, the Scots version being entitled Farewell to Lochaber.� When Burns first heard the air he is said to have exclaimed, Oh, that's a fine tune for a broken heart.� It is one of the finest slow traditional airs and is arranged here for bagpipes and band by Brendan Power.

These Variations were originally composed for a eurhythmist, Noor Elffers  in Holland, hence the alternative titles in Dutch, who wanted a composition for euthythmy based on the planets and their qualities for school students to move to using the choreography methods based on the philosophy of Rudolf Steiner. However the Variations have been performed as a piano solo to great acclaim and do not have to be used exclusively for dance and movement classes. The technical level is aimed at intermediate and higher level players and the performance time c.5-6 mins. The virtuosity of the player in the faster variations determining the speed.

Recognized as one of Oscar Peterson’s most significant compositions, Hymn to Freedom was written in 1962 and was swiftly embraced by people over the world as the anthem of the Civil Rights Movement. The piece was Peterson’s first major work and was written with encouragement from his producer and dear friend Norman Granz. During those initial recording sessions, Granz urged Peterson to create a tune with a “definitive early-blues feel�. For inspiration, Peterson drew upon various church renderings of Negro spirituals recalled from his childhood in Montreal. He aimed to maintain the unadorned, yet poignant quality of these early Baptist hymns while composing the beginning chorus of Hymn to Freedom. Upon its completion, Peterson and Granz decided that lyrics would complement the music and contacted Malcolm Dodds, composer, arranger and choir director of The Malcolm Dodds Singers, a backup group for many popular artists of the day. Dodds turned to his collaborator Harriette Hamilton, who had been writing lyrics for the choir group’s original compositions for several years. According to Hamilton, “all the lyrics had to do was express in very simple language the hope for unity, peace, and dignity for mankind. It was easy to write.� With Peterson on piano, Ray Brown on bass and Ed Thigpen on drums, the trio recorded the piece on Night Train (Verve 1962), which became one of their most commercially successful albums. Critical acclaim moved Peterson to record Hymn to Freedom on several albums that followed. This arrangement is playable by SATB Saxophone Quartet with optional Bass Saxophone, String Bass and Drums. For performances by SATB Saxophone Quartet without rhythm, the part marked Baritone Saxophone 2 (substitute Bass Saxophone) should be used. Some improvising is allowed for in the soprano, alto and tenor parts. Optional written solos are provided. This poem encapsulates the Zen concept of mu, or the negation of fixed concepts, challenging the listener to embrace the boundless nature of understanding.In my composition, I have strived to translate this philosophical depth into music. The interplay between the piano and the voice is crafted to reflect the paradoxical imagery of the poem. The music moves through moments of tension and release, mirroring the poem’s journey from perplexity to a serene acceptance of the unknown.This piece is an invitation to explore the spaces between notes, between words, where the essence of understanding might lie.The emotional core of this composition is also deeply personal. It resonates with my own longing for my father, who passed away seven years prior to the creation of this work. Just as Ikkyu's poem reflects a yearning for a connection with the past, this music embodies my own journey of grief, memory, and the search for peace in the echoes of loss. The intertwining of my personal narrative with Ikkyu’s profound words aims to offer a universal contemplation on the themes of absence, longing, and the ephemeral nature of existence.In creating this work, my aim has been to offer not just a musical experience, but a doorway into the profound simplicity of Zen thought. Through the synthesis of voice, piano, and Ikkyu's evocative poetry, we embark on a journey that transcends the mere act of listening, inviting contemplation, and perhaps, a glimpse into the boundless sky of our own perception.

He knew he didn't have long left, but his reflections in this song aren't melancholy - he writes of the things he can see out of his window, the beauty of the world, the fun that kids are having outside, and the simple joys of winter. The arrangement has some tricky rhythms, as it aims to stay pretty close to what Freddie sang. Aim for a conversational feel, with some freedom in the delivery, and it will become easier than mathematically working out all the cross-rhythms. Enjoy the big fall-offs - they're really fun!
