Published by Keir C Crawley (A0.972023). ‘AsCent’ is the culmination of a number of ideas and experiences, first of which was the need to compose exciting and challenging music for the classroom. This piece attempts to put the Key Stage 2 or Key Stage 3 budding musician into the musical world of the Marvel Cinematic Universe or other similar big budget sci-fi action adventure films. Combining motor ostinati with contextually more adventurous accompanying harmony my aim is to move the musical learning away from the sometimes twee and undemanding into something with a little more musical bite. This orchestration of the piece includes parts for what I have come to know as a ‘mixed ability school ensemble’ i.e. a selection of instruments that you might typically find being taught in high schools both in London and nationally. The idea behind this was to put primary school musicians alongside older (sometimes as much as 10 years older) musicians from high schools to act both as inspiration and role models. 'AsCent’ for mixed ability school ensemble was first performed on Saturday 1st July 2017 by 76 musicians including 34 primary school children from the London Borough of Brent under the baton of the composer.

The mother was unmarried and ashamed and tried to ignore the child as if it were a reproach to her, the child became autistic and unable to react to others.  This setting for alto voice, cello and guitar reflect the mood of the poem in all its sadness.  The sound sample is a performance by the composer, with Chris Benson on cello.  (The guitar's 6th string is tuned to D - much use is made of 12th and 19th (or 7th if preferred) fret harmonics)  The pdf file contains score and parts.  An instrumental version of the the music, entitled Promenade d'hiver (viola, cello and guitar), is also available on this site. Musicians spend years preparing concert pieces to amaze and move audiences, but are they always appropriate in the relaxed setting of a café?These ten pieces aim to give the performer repertoire which they can use in these situations. Each piece is written to convey emotion, but not disturb the diner. Structurally, they consist of one or two sections with long harmonic progressions. This should allow the player to repeat each section as many times as they likewithout the audience noticing or becoming bored. I have included suggested structures in the scores, but these are suggestions only. This is true of the tempo markings as well. Feel free to slow the pieces down when a calmer atmosphere is required and the opposite when customers are a little livlier.
